Elize Strydom gets stuck in the mud at the 20th Annual East Coast Blues and Roots Festival

Bluesfest – 20th Annual East Coast Blues and Roots Festival
Friday 10th April
Review: Elize Strydom

Personality test: What sort of footwear would you choose to wear to Bluesfest?

a. Thongs from Woolies
b. Gumboots from Bunnings
c. Your brand new Dunlop Volleys
d. Au Natural (bare feet)

If you answered a. you’re an optimistic idealist. If you picked c. get set for disappointment. If you deliberated between b. and d. then read on…

The 20th Annual East Coast Blues and Roots Festival was always going to be muddy. In the two weeks leading up to the festival the Northern Rivers had copped near-torrential rain, flash flooding and damaging winds. I spoke to Festival Director Peter Noble a day before the gates were due to open and he was optimistic. One day of hot sun beating down on the Belongil Fields meant they had “dodged a bullet” and things were looking up. Yesterday the Rain Gods withheld their mercy but they’re well and truly smiling again today. Steam is literally rising off the sodden grass as punters – young and old – stream past sniffer dogs, security checks and wrist band fasteners. Tracks between the festival’s six stages, market stalls, food tents and port-a-loos have been beaten and new tracks are appearing as people try to avoid the shin deep mud pit at the centre of the original track. So many are falling at the first hurdle as their thongs flick splats of mud up their legs and backs. Others are literally stuck in the mud as their feet plunge into the thick brown slosh and fail to emerge. Now is not the time to suffer from unpreparedness – there’s music to see, oh so much music. More than 500 artists and 220 performances, to be exact. I’ve gotta start somewhere, why not with Watermelon Slim and the Workers?

San Valentino Bordello Show @ The Globe, Brisbane 14 February 2009 – Review

Review: San Valentino Bordello Show at The Globe, Brisbane 14 February 2009
Author: Lisa Lamb

Who knows when the fifties revival began? Maybe with *The Stray Cats* in the eighties, maybe in the seventies with Grease and Happy Days, or maybe The Wintersun Festival helping bring modern rockabilly rebels and greaser bands in to the limelight, such as Paulie & his Crazy Rhythm Boys, who opened the show on the foyer stage in authentic fifites style with thier double bass, duck tails, pants and guitars under the armpits. Some music is simply meant to be heard live, and rockabilly is one of them! The energy just makes you want to get up and shake to the rythm. It was like a scene from Back to the Future and this was the McFly band discovering Rock n Roll.

On the main stage The Wretched Villains stand out from the crowd sounding like an alternate gothic rock band from the late eighties, with influences from Nick Cave and Siouxie & the Banshees. Drawing upon the deep swamp blues and British post punk they produce a dark, classic and haunting sound giving a good contrast to the lightweight fifties sounds in the foyer.

Suze DeMarchi returns to Australia for a slew of shows and some new material to unleash on the Australian public.

Suze says – “I think that a relevant quote for the story of my life would be “Time Flies”!!!
It’s been a year since we did our last shows and a year that proved to be really creative but also a reminder of how geography affects everything!! Dave and I have been plowing ahead with work on new songs.

What we really love to do is write and perform and since my life has taken me far away, across the seas, to the desert that is Los Angeles, we have to get it when we can!!!
CANNOT wait to play again! April… All of it…somewhere near you…. get your boots on…. Heaps” – Suze

With the band currently holed up in their chilli Ayrshire practice pad, it seems a good time to announce that the band will break from demoing the fifth album and set off for a slightly sunnier climate.

That’s right the Biff, will be returning to the live stage this coming March for four shows along the Australian coast. The shows will take in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney, with tickets available in the coming days. Tour dates below…

Soundwave 2009 Festival second round announced

As promised, Soundwave returns in ’09, and to paraphrase Southpark, it is bigger, longer and uncut!
Topped by one of this generation’s most talented and uncompromising bands in NINE INCH NAILS, the festival also sees a long overdue return of grunge titans ALICE IN CHAINS and juvenile delinquents The BLOODHOUND GANG.

Never one to rest on there laurels, they’ve announced the second round of artists for Soundwave 09!
So without further ado… joining the already massive cast will be the powerful live force that is the Dillinger Escape Plan, Florida Metalcore titans Underoath, the sky-high hooks of Forever The Sickest Kids, pop rock balladeers Jack’s Mannequin and the unrelenting rhythms of All That Remains.
As always, there is also plenty to offer the fans of punk, metal and the heavier end of the alternative spectrum, as well as signing tents giving artists the opportunity to meet fans, market stalls and the odd bit of crappy installation art for you to laugh at.

Dropkick Murphys
BIG DAY OUT is dedicated to providing good times. And to help us do this in 2009, we’ve called on the band dubbed Boston’s answer to the Ramones – the legendary DROPKICK MURPHYS. This loud, raucous and chaotic seven-piece Celtic punk combo hits the stage with one goal: to play music that creates an all-for-one, one-for-all environment where everyone is encouraged to participate, sing along, and have a good time. Sounds good to us! So let the good times roll with DROPKICK MURPHYS at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

Gabriella Cilmi and The Presets sweep the 2008 ARIA Awards

The winners of the 2008 ARIA Awards, proudly presented by Motorola, have been announced and pop and electronic dance music have ruled the day in the form of multiple winners GABRIELLA CILMI and THE PRESETS. They join an eclectic group of ARIA Award recipients who include THE LIVING END, KASEY CHAMBERS and SHANE NICHOLSON, NICK CAVE and GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, THE PANICS and BLISS N’ ESO, among others.

In what is an extraordinary success story, vocal powerhouse GABRIELLA CILMI, a pop singer who had yet to emerge on the Australian music landscape this time last year, has taken out an incredible 6 ARIA Awards on the back of her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, and her breakthrough smash hit single, Sweet About Me. The Melbourne-born, London-based Cilmi has received ARIA Awards in the categories of BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE (Sweet About Me), BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Lessons to be Learned), BEST POP RELEASE (Lessons to be Learned), HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE (Sweet About Me) and the coveted ARIA Award for SINGLE OF THE YEAR for Sweet About Me. With the world at her feet, GABRIELLA CILMI’s ARIA Awards triumph is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement for the Dandenong girl who has just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Electronic duo THE PRESETS has also had a cracking year with the release of their widely acclaimed second album Apocalypso. They fought off stiff competition in the prestigious categories of ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST GROUP to take out both for the hugely popular Apocalypso. The album has also seen THE PRESETS receive the pointy trophy in the category of BEST DANCE RELEASE taking their tally to 3 ARIA Awards (plus 2 ARIA Artisan Awards, including Producer of the Year for Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). The self-produced Apocalypso, which spawned the gritty hit single My People, has sealed THE PRESETS as Australia’s premiere electronic act.

Augie March – Watch Me Disappear – Album Release

Available from Augie March - Watch Me Disappear

There’s little about Augie March that could be called everyday. With singer Glenn Richards’ distinctive voice, his sharp, literary lyrics and the band’s off-kilter rock ‘n’ roll, the Melbourne band has created a niche for itself in the past 12 years, one that has brought multiple awards, taken it around the world and attracted an ever-increasing and loyal fan-base in Australia and beyond.

The world Richards has created for Augie March’s fourth album, Watch Me Disappear, is certainly not everyday. Barbarians have breached its walls and are wallowing in the chaos. Muggers mug, killers kill, dragons with bulldog heads inhabit the pubs and a wealth of richly-drawn characters trade punches, kisses and everything in between. It’s a place of extraordinary beauty too, a beauty that offers escape from the evil, from the anarchy — from the everyday.

BIG DAY OUT 2009 – Official First Announcement

BIG DAY OUT 2009
THE OFFICIAL FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Photo: Tony Mott

With the global economy on the brink of collapse, what better time to ask people to hand over their hard earned money to escape the world for a day.

And who better to prove to you that investing in music is safer and returns much more than banks any day: the man who has seen it all, Neil Young.

This is a proud moment for BDO. After 17 years of producing the most dynamic, entertaining and challenging event we possibly can, this year’s shows promise to stand out from all others.

From the dynamic sounds of Arctic Monkeys or the lush depth of TV on the Radio to the wealth of great local talent or the welcome return of the Prodigy, the world’s biggest travellin’ circus will be once again back on the road next January.

We are also working on making sure the Melbourne site is green, has shade and offers the level of enjoyment you deserve. Drought or no drought.

So come and join us for just one day. We hope the first announcement will satisfy your musical needs, but for those who need more, there will be a second announcement in November…

BIG DAY OUT is honoured to announce the arrival of one of those rare modern musicians for whom the term “legend” is more under than over-statement: NEIL YOUNG. At a prolific phase of his 40-year-plus career, YOUNG is leading his band through eclectic set lists, picking from 2008’s Chrome Dreams II, delving into classics like Hey Hey, My My, and venting his activist’s spleen on Let’s Impeach the President. Witness the many faces of a true rock icon, NEIL YOUNG at BIG DAY OUT 2009. All shows

ybk
Brisbane’s tasty effervescent Yves Klein Blue and Sydney’s sweet astutely pop The Holidays will be touring the nation throughout October.

Yves Klein Blue’s clashy blend of classic pop, old punk, polka inspired ditties and indie rock have been gracing the airwaves and live audiences throughout 2008 with the EP “YVES KLEIN BLUE DRAW ATTENTION TO THEMSELVES” released through Dew Process. They recently played SxSW and Splendour In The Grass and have supported international bands such as The Fratellis (UK) and Tokyo Police Club (Canada) as well as a heap of others. This will be their last tour before they release their much anticipated debut album next year.

The Holidays athemic pop singles “Holiday” and “Telephone” picked up international play from self-titled EP released early 2008 through Liberation and saw them touring throughout the year with international bands such as The Wombats (UK) and Light Speed Champion (US) and festival appearances at Playground Weekender and Come Together Festival. Byron Bay Arts & Music Festival, Belongil Fields, 7-8 Jan 2009

Now “Sunset Sounds” in Brisbane on the 7th and 8th of January 2009… Click HERE for details.

***** The Byron Bay Arts and Music Festival Resurrection Delayed *****

It is with great disappointment that the Byron Bay Arts Crew announces The Byron Bay Arts and Music Festival will not happen this summer.

The festival, which originally ran from ’94 to ’96 and was organised by a collective of local arts & music enthusiasts, was due to be resurrected next January but hit regulatory hurdles. Despite securing a fantastic line-up; overwhelming support amongst the Byron Bay

community; and positive early indications from the local council, the organiser’s self-imposed deadline for obtaining final approvals for the venue expired last week. Whilst it is common for major events in Byron Bay to proceed without final approvals until only weeks before the event, organisers were uncomfortable with the level of risk given the significance of the line-up and organisation going in to the event.

With tickets due to go on sale later this month, organiser’s felt that cancelling the event was intensely regrettable yet the most responsible decision. The Byron Arts Crew are hopeful of resurrecting the festival in the future as it provides an important showcase opportunity for local music and arts as well as much needed entertainment to a vastly expanded Byron Bay population over summer. Organiser’s also wish to extend a sincere thank you and apology to the many people who have been part of the event as well as those who eagerly anticipated its return.

Music lovers need not despair as it has been confirmed that the majority of the bands will be coming together at a new Brisbane show presented by The Falls Festival – Sunset Sounds – More details announced shortly!
