News: The Medics ‘This Boat We Call Love’ East Coast Tour 2010

the medicsAfter quickly garnering the reputation as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from Queensland’s ever-growing pool of the freakishly talented, The Medics are proud to announce the release of their second EP This Boat We Call Love and will celebrate with a series of East Coast launch shows with Melbourne’s Blackchords.

Like many a promising band, the stage is where The Medics truly shine. With their well-earned stripes in place after winning support slots for the likes of Something With Numbers, The Panics, The Grates, Faker, Blue King Brown and Scribe, the group of tight-knit friends have not only gained acclaim in their hometown of Cairns, far north Queensland, but are also pricking ears and turning the heads of the nation with their epic live show. Brimming with emotive songwriting, stunning musicianship and intense live performances, it won’t be long before the music lovers of Australia will be clambering to see the spectacle for themselves.

Released through Brisbane label Starving Kids, This Boat We Call Love was produced by Mark Myers from The Middle East and features five performances that walk the spectrum of rock – from the delicate and ambient to the jagged and intense.

Joining The Medics on the bulk of shows for their East Coast tour will be Melbourne’s Blackchords. After releasing their debut self-titled album in 2009 to many a glowing review, the band are now back in the country after a string of successful dates in the UK and France in the later part of the year. Wasting no time in jumping back into the spotlight to show off their gentle, swooning brand of rock, they’ll be joining The Medics on their New South Wales and Victorian dates.

Sunday Selection – The Kidney Thieves : 31 May 2009

LifeMusicMedia’s Sunday Selection is your weekly view to a new or emerging Queensland Artists

The Kidney Thieves
The Kidney Thieves sound like a car-chase gunfight between a possessed gypsy and a vigilante clown, cruising the funk freeway at full throttle, leaving a trail of carnage and the faint odour of Parmesan.

Put simply, TKT are a distinctive, genre-busting act blending jazz, funk psychedelic, metal, classical, dance, tribal, latin, drum & bass and western influences. The music is technical, with tempo changes and complex time signatures, yet remains accessible, fun and danceable to a broad range of musical tastes. With a penchant for stage monikers and ludicrous song titles, a propensity toward random costumes and live visual projections, and a soft spot for instrumental epics, this group offers a wildly refreshing experience. The Kidney Thieves are as unpredictable as the name suggests – you can never be prepared or properly dressed for the occasion!

Gabriella Cilmi and The Presets sweep the 2008 ARIA Awards

The winners of the 2008 ARIA Awards, proudly presented by Motorola, have been announced and pop and electronic dance music have ruled the day in the form of multiple winners GABRIELLA CILMI and THE PRESETS. They join an eclectic group of ARIA Award recipients who include THE LIVING END, KASEY CHAMBERS and SHANE NICHOLSON, NICK CAVE and GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, THE PANICS and BLISS N’ ESO, among others.

In what is an extraordinary success story, vocal powerhouse GABRIELLA CILMI, a pop singer who had yet to emerge on the Australian music landscape this time last year, has taken out an incredible 6 ARIA Awards on the back of her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, and her breakthrough smash hit single, Sweet About Me. The Melbourne-born, London-based Cilmi has received ARIA Awards in the categories of BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE (Sweet About Me), BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Lessons to be Learned), BEST POP RELEASE (Lessons to be Learned), HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE (Sweet About Me) and the coveted ARIA Award for SINGLE OF THE YEAR for Sweet About Me. With the world at her feet, GABRIELLA CILMI’s ARIA Awards triumph is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement for the Dandenong girl who has just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Electronic duo THE PRESETS has also had a cracking year with the release of their widely acclaimed second album Apocalypso. They fought off stiff competition in the prestigious categories of ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST GROUP to take out both for the hugely popular Apocalypso. The album has also seen THE PRESETS receive the pointy trophy in the category of BEST DANCE RELEASE taking their tally to 3 ARIA Awards (plus 2 ARIA Artisan Awards, including Producer of the Year for Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). The self-produced Apocalypso, which spawned the gritty hit single My People, has sealed THE PRESETS as Australia’s premiere electronic act.

Byron Bay Arts & Music Festival, Belongil Fields, 7-8 Jan 2009

Now “Sunset Sounds” in Brisbane on the 7th and 8th of January 2009… Click HERE for details.

***** The Byron Bay Arts and Music Festival Resurrection Delayed *****

It is with great disappointment that the Byron Bay Arts Crew announces The Byron Bay Arts and Music Festival will not happen this summer.

The festival, which originally ran from ’94 to ’96 and was organised by a collective of local arts & music enthusiasts, was due to be resurrected next January but hit regulatory hurdles. Despite securing a fantastic line-up; overwhelming support amongst the Byron Bay

community; and positive early indications from the local council, the organiser’s self-imposed deadline for obtaining final approvals for the venue expired last week. Whilst it is common for major events in Byron Bay to proceed without final approvals until only weeks before the event, organisers were uncomfortable with the level of risk given the significance of the line-up and organisation going in to the event.

With tickets due to go on sale later this month, organiser’s felt that cancelling the event was intensely regrettable yet the most responsible decision. The Byron Arts Crew are hopeful of resurrecting the festival in the future as it provides an important showcase opportunity for local music and arts as well as much needed entertainment to a vastly expanded Byron Bay population over summer. Organiser’s also wish to extend a sincere thank you and apology to the many people who have been part of the event as well as those who eagerly anticipated its return.

Music lovers need not despair as it has been confirmed that the majority of the bands will be coming together at a new Brisbane show presented by The Falls Festival – Sunset Sounds – More details announced shortly!

Faker Plays The EKKA Interview – 26 August 2008

LifeMusicMedia caught up with Nathan Hudson of Faker, who will be playing the Brisbane EKKA ahead to their ‘Are You Magnetic’ National Headline Tour.

Faker

Tamie here representing LifeMusicMedia, saying a huge hello to the Sydney band, FAKER, who’s going to be performing at Brisbane EKKA on the 26th August….whoooooot – you’ll be socially inept to miss them. These guys ROCK….literally.

How’s your day been?

Nathan: Good. Been cut out trying to relax, actually.

Have you been to the EKKA before?

Nathan: No, I haven’t, I’ve been to the Sydney equivalent. That’s always fun. The idea of playing at something like that is really exciting for us.

Fame, you have it, and your music is worthy of it. Has anything interesting happened ever since your music has become more mainstream?

Nathan: I dunno, It’s all been pretty organic, so it’s more like a work in progress and something that kind of happens. What we’re doing is part of something that continues. In terms of whether people interests in what we’re doing has changed, I guess we’re more validated. Hopefully music is about communication and you spend a good deal of time trying to convince people that what you’re doing is worth making and then worth listening to and it’s nice when it translates on that level. It’s just an exciting time, people coming up to us and saying congratulations and we love what you do.

I love your lyrics, I’m a big lyrics person.

Nathan: Thank you. I generally have an idea of where I want to go – lyrically, also it takes me a long time to finish or finalise how I’m gonna do that. Getting into the studio with Paul Fox in ‘Be The Twilight’, our producer wanted to track as much of the vocal as live as possible and so we finish a lot of lyrics on the fly, which I guess to listen to is fresher to me to listen back to and hopefully for other people as well.

Fantastic. With ‘This Heart Attack’ and your new single ‘Are You Magnetic’, there is a big difference in attitude. Why did you choose to release this next?

Nathan: I feel like ‘This Heart Attack’ to ‘Are You Magnetic’ is a natural progression for me. ‘This Heart Attack’ is like doing your head in and I guess it’s to get away and sort things out. To figure out what it was you exactly liked about this relationship or any kind of relationship in the first place. ‘Are You Magnetic’ is kind of about making those decisions that are sometimes harder to make. To try to move forward in the relationship or to end it.

Back to the EKKA, do you have an ultimate show bag that you’d like?

Nathan: The only thing I know about show bags is that they’ve got a lot of chocolate in them really, either that or magic tricks. I’m kinda torn between both of those things. Each of us as kids would have a limited amount of money to spend on show bags, and I had to decide whether my belly was more important than the entertainment or the entertainment more important than my belly. It was really, really difficult. I’d be in tears trying to decide which way to go.

The Bertie Beetle Bags, are pretty good value.

Nathan: They’d be in the paper review with a list of how exactly they were the best seller or something. I don’t know anybody that’s bought a Bertie Beetle outside of a Bertie Beetle showbag.

No, I don’t think you can buy them singly.

Nathan: That’s bizarre.

Any plans on jumping on any rides while you’re at the EKKA. Will you get out after the show?

Nathan: Everything that throws me up-side-down and around a bit, I’m excited about. I’d like to go on.. Yeah, it’s called a Whizzer or something. That thing where you’re in a cage and the cage goes around and you go around in the cage? Perfect!

Good Stuff Just wanted to ask if you had a chance to play/jam with somebody, who would it be?

Nathan: Sitting in a room with guitars and jamming doesn’t interest me so much except if it’s with my band… the band that I’m in. It’s kind of taken a long time to develop those relationships and work out how to do that. The idea of sitting with someone that does stuff electronically and finding musical ideas that way is really exciting.

Would it be possible, to perhaps while you’re on stage take a photo of the crowd for me?

Nathan: HaHa, that’s kinda not something I tend to do, I tend to be about the singing and the dancing, and doing stuff – I’ve often wanted to get photos of myself with the crowd, but, the idea of holding a camera and taking the photos is not something I do.

Last Question – The fans, what can we expect from FAKER in the future?

Nathan: Ummmm, Music and the celeberation of music!

Thank you for your time Nathan…
