Sunset Sounds 2011 – Day 2, Live Review

Review: Lauren Sherritt
Living EndDay two of Sunset Sounds 2011 arrives, bringing with it steady rain and a forecast of nothing but. Organisers have spread sand over some of the affected areas, but when I arrive on Thursday afternoon the damage that the combination of thousands of feet and a whole lot of rain did to the grounds yesterday is easily apparent. Areas that were grassy are now plains of squelchy mud ready to snatch unsuspecting thongs from feet and disappear them forever and the paths we traversed yesterday are now boasting small streams of rainwater.

RED INK – ‘CATCHING A KILLER’ EP LAUNCH!

RED INK – ‘Catching A Killer’ EP Launch Double Pass Giveaway: See below for details.

RED INK are not your average band, they are not here for a quick rise to the top, to jump on a style trend or to ride a wave of hype. These guys are musicians, good ones. And over the last four years they have proved that they are here to do the hard yards. Their hundreds of gigs across the country and thousands of hours crafting their sound have paid off in the form of a strong underground following across Australia and sinking its claws in across the world.

The groups latest killer track is 3 minutes of violence, pop and adrenaline, with a chorus that will jam through your mind for days. The slurred audacity of John Jakubenko’s vocals takes your mind straight back to your craziest house party and that teetering feeling that things could get out of control – but no matter what, you’re gonna have a blast.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Michael Paynter played The Prince Bandroom for the launch of his new-ish EP, Love The Fall. Paynter took to the stage with gusto and vibrancy, eager to please his audience. His performance style was positive and honest, banter humble yet friendly, whilst his vocals were as much at home on ballads “Crave” and “Novocaine”, as they were on pop-rock tracks such as “Love The Fall”. Notable mention should be made of his frantic rock cover of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”, which maintained the energetic momentum of the show.

on November 9th, 2009

After 7 years on the road… in hotels, in foreign mud, strewn packets of guitar strings, bags full of hotel keys, flight stubs and stickers on gear cases that map a zig-zag of touring across just about every continent on the globe, a motorcycle accident saw some cheap Los-Angeles-Hotel down time for Mat McHugh. That period saw him strip his songs down, take some time sitting still, and record his first solo album. A soulful unwinding, and a timely look back to the early TBG.
