Live Review | Soundwave Festival 2014 – Brisbane

Review by Brandon Blythe
Green Day - photo by stuart blytheThe streets leading into Brisbane’s RNA Showgrounds were flooded with excited fans eagerly waiting for the gates to open to this years Soundwave festival. As far as the eye can see were show goers of all age’s shapes and sizes proudly wearing their favourite band moniker or dressed in attention seeking costumes. The gates open, the crowd spills in and the day begins.

Our first stop was Amon Amarth who had been slated the very early 11am spot on Stage 4. The early start didn’t stop a league of loyal fans from packing the stage to see the Swedish melodic death metal band blasting out their best… Viking ship and all.

“Mon the Biff” – On Stage 1, Biffy Clyro gave everything they had and more! The shirtless, tattooed Scots rocking out a frantic set of favourites, fuelling the audience and setting a standard for the day ahead. Frontman Simon Neil captivatingly plays and sings and connects with the crowd. Ending on a high “We are Biffy f**king Clyro!“.

Black Label Society “Order of the Black” – LP Review

  Review: Lana Harris

Zakk Wylde is known as one of the metal world’s best guitar players, particularly
when talking shredding abilities. He was Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist for two decades, and didn’t let decadence overcome discipline – as well as working and touring with Ozzy, he completed an album a year from 1999-2006 with his side project, Black Label Society (BLS). BLS have their guitars firmly wedged in heavy metal/ hard rock – think Alice in Chains, a bit of Ozzy’s influence apparent in the vocals. But now Wylde’s no longer with Ozzy, and Order of the Black is the first album release by BLS in four years.

Mark Lanegan Touring Australia – July 2010

In an announcement that has been long awaited by rock fans, Mark Lanegan will perform a series of shows across Australia and New Zealand for The Frontier Touring Company. The July shows will be his first solo tour since 2004, sharing with us an array of his impressive and extensive back catalogue.

With a musical career spawning from the early Seattle ‘grunge’ days, Mark Lanegan is a creature of undying integrity and an ever existing nuance. He has been noted as a poetic misfit whose lyrics remain forever etched in your memory long past first hearing them. Continue reading

DOPE (USA) + SOIL (USA) Australian Tour December 2009

Dope   Australia, strap yourself in, ‘cause dope and SOiL are joining forces to make one huge, hell of a show and throwing it our way! These two hard-hitting bands are renowned for their wild and industrial driven live shows, which will be sure to blow audiences when they both tour Australia’s east coast for the first time.

dope, with their politically charged, sonic arsenal of sounds mixed with a grooving, melodic style appeals to metal fans across the board. Their live set has been described by reviewers as crazy, primal, tight and pumped full of raw energy, and they get their audience going wild, so you know you’re in for one hell of a show. Not only do these boys play kick-ass music, their sex-drugs-and-rock-n-roll attitude and swagger will leave you craving more of them.

Soundwave 2009 Festival second round announced

As promised, Soundwave returns in ’09, and to paraphrase Southpark, it is bigger, longer and uncut!
Topped by one of this generation’s most talented and uncompromising bands in NINE INCH NAILS, the festival also sees a long overdue return of grunge titans ALICE IN CHAINS and juvenile delinquents The BLOODHOUND GANG.

Never one to rest on there laurels, they’ve announced the second round of artists for Soundwave 09!
So without further ado… joining the already massive cast will be the powerful live force that is the Dillinger Escape Plan, Florida Metalcore titans Underoath, the sky-high hooks of Forever The Sickest Kids, pop rock balladeers Jack’s Mannequin and the unrelenting rhythms of All That Remains.
As always, there is also plenty to offer the fans of punk, metal and the heavier end of the alternative spectrum, as well as signing tents giving artists the opportunity to meet fans, market stalls and the odd bit of crappy installation art for you to laugh at.
