Weezer “Hurley” – LP Review

BUY CD HERE 		  Weezer have been around for a long time now. Their unique geek alt rock sound first surfaced in the nineties, when they experienced their peaks of mainstream success with the albums Weezer (1994) and Pinkerton (1996). Since then, they’ve copped a lot of flak regarding their direction and style, with one fan offering them $10 million for the band to not make another record. The band’s response? Up it to $20 mil and we’re in. Like all bands with a distinctive ‘sound’, there’ll always be criticisms when the group evolves. Perhaps it might be expected after coming up to two decades of existence with an image and lyrics that played on the innocent awkwardness of early adulthood?

  Deep in the American south, legends about crossroads abound. It is said that if you stand at a crossroads and wait there until midnight, a man (or the devil in the guise of a man) will appear who will imbibe you with phenomenal guitar playing abilities (and the women, money and fame that come with it). All that for the rather reasonable cost of your soul. Nowadays we know that’s not true, because there are plenty of people who have immense amounts of money, sex and fame that got gypped on the talented part.

Melvins “The Bride Screamed Murder” LP Review

  More than 25 years making music, the Melvins are credited with influencing scores of bands (including Nirvana and Soundgarden) but no one sounds just like them. Their creations are grungy, often slow but still powerful and slide into sludgy metal territory occasionally. They have two drummers in what is currently a four member outfit (got to expect a few line up changes in two and a half decades) who have been together for three albums now.

On The Bride Screamed Murder the Melvins are, if not experimental, at the very least non traditional in their music arrangements. There’s never a sense of

bowing to any kind of convention in the music. When voice is used, it’s as an instrument itself, not as a way of conveying opinion or an observation set to music, and they don’t stick to one time signature or tempo. If you’re unprepared for this, the way the songs play out is disorienting. My first listen of The Bride Screamed Murder, particularly the first two tracks, left me wondering what was going on. ‘Evil New War God’ comes to an almost dead stop before changing direction. We can outline the usual journey to the venue, the mass of colourful crowds milling around the stages and the blistering heat of the scorching Australian summer, complimenting those in their BDO attire. With all of the following making continual appearances, Mexican hats, BDO coolers and an array of prominent band shirts, BDO 2010 marked the beginning of a new decade of international music in superbly fine form.

Kicking off the Australian BDO roller coaster, that will set up tents in near every capital city in the country and twice in Sydney this year, the leg begins with a line up of mammoth proportions at one of the only places that surf lifestyle, trip hop beats, ghetto tricks and divine diva’s meet our very own rock and roll sub culture.

Robbie Williams makes chart-topping debut on the ARIA Album Chart ahead of his Australian visit
ARIA Releases two new charts

Robbie Williams (Robbie Williams) explodes onto the ARIA Album Chart this week with “Reality Killed The Video Star”, claiming his fourth Australian No.1 album to give him an impressive total of twelve weeks at the top of the chart. The international superstar, who will perform at the ARIA Awards next week, scored a total of nine weeks at number one for his 2004/05 “Greatest Hits” release, along with one week at the top for both “Intensive Care” and “Rude Box” in 2005 and 2006 respectively. He also claims the first chart topper on the new ARIA Digital Album Chart with “Reality Killed The Video Star” and whilst Foo Fighters were number one on the Physical Album Chart, Robbie’s digital sales were extensive enough to ensure him number one overall, as reflected by the ARIA Album Chart. It’s only the second time since digital album sales were included in the album chart some two years ago, that the number one Physical Album and number one on the ARIA Album Chart have been different.

Ke$ha takes out top spot on ARIA Singles and Digital Track Chart as Foo Fighters blast to No.1 on ARIA Album Chart…

US pop starlet Ke$ha blitzes the ARIA Singles Chart this week with her smash hit “Tik Tok”, knocking The Black Eyed Peas from the top of the chart to land her first individual ARIA No.1 single. She hit No.1 on the singles chart earlier this year as a featured artist on Flo Rida‘s “Right Round”, which spent a huge seven weeks at the top back in February, March and April. The Foo Fighters claim their fourth Australian No.1 album on the ARIA Album Chart with the debut of their highly anticipated “Greatest Hits”. The first Foo Fighters album to debut at peak position was “One By One” in October 2002, followed by “In Your Honour” which lasted five weeks at the summit in 2005, and most recently “Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace” which held the top spot for a week in October 2007.

Barcelona, Brussels, Paris, London, Manchester, Brighton.
On our way to Barcelona we missed our flight due to a massive TM (tour manager) fail. Ironically she was the only one who had slept the night before. However, just when it looked like our Barcelonan dreams would be snatched away from us,

we found the world’s most expensive flights on the world’s worst airline and made it to our show where we towered over 2,500 crazy Spaniards.

On 26 September 2009, Brisbane’s own Sounds of Spring music festival will once again open its gates at an impressive new venue at Victoria Park, Gilchrist Ave, Herston (opposite RNA Showgrounds & Royal Children’s Hospital) to an impressive line-up of the country’s best indie acts and 15,000 antsy music lovers. After cutting our teeth on the festival scene last year, Sounds of Spring invites you back for a bigger, better, louder festival, in every way.
