Darren Hanlon Announces 2014 Christmas Tour

Darren HanlonIf there’s one constant in the disjointed life of Darren Hanlon, it’s his annual Yuletide show series. “The years seem to get faster but for me the Christmas tour is the playing card in the spokes that mark each turn,” he says.

And the season is upon us again. Nearing a decade of existence, this year will see Hanlon once again take the stage in a blaze of solo informality, keeping things loose and inviting special guests to sing a song or two.

Don’t miss Darren Hanlon at The Bridge Hotel in Castlemaine on Thursday 11 December, Trinity Sessions in Adelaide on Sunday 14 December (all ages), Mojo’s in Fremantle on Monday 15 December, Northcote Uniting Church Hall in Melbourne on Thursday 18 December (all ages), Northcote Social Club in Melbourne on Friday 19 December, St Stephens Church in Sydney on Saturday 20 December (all ages), and The Globe in Brisbane on Sunday 21 December (all ages). Tickets to all shows are on sale now.

Sunday Selection – SIAN EVANS : 24 May 2009

LifeMusicMedia’s Sunday Selection is your weekly view to a new or emerging Queensland Artist

Sian Evans    “Sure Sian’s Got a wonderful voice, dextrous guitar chops, lyrical prowess, is a looker and charming as hell……..but what about the positives?” – Tim Rogers……….

Thriving on the complexities of human behaviour and the simplicities of beauty in a philosophical shade. Moved by moments of magic. Excited by the possibilities of endless rhyming sequences created through rolling vals and syllabic rhythms. Best depicted as a contemporary synthesis of Urban Folk-Funk and Twisted Gypsy Jazz, it’s the new black of the evolving Australian Blues and Roots culture.

Born in FNQ, singer/songwriter Sian Evans has played numerous gigs along the East coast with an array of musicians big and small. Supporting the likes of Ash Grunwald, Deborah Conway, Tim Rogers, and guest with Clare Bowditch in her short career.

The Kill Scene, Feline Down, Twist Oliver Twist @ The Globe – 11th April, 2009

The Kill Scene, Feline Down, Twist Oliver Twist
The Globe – 11th April, 2009
Author: Lisa Lamb

The Kill Scene formerly known as the Dream Sequence inflicted a quick and painless death on themselves in front of a live audience, then musically re-incarnated. Sounding very much like The Cure as they delved into Gothic New Wave with a dark, ambient precision. Playing a blend of originals combined with 80’s British rock like Kate Bush “Running up that Hill”, along with a dark and twisted, yet beautiful version of “Let Me Entertain You” by Queen.    kill scene

“Puts a musical punch right in the belly of pop mediocrity” –
Peter Cobbin, Senior Engineer, Abbey Road Studios.

2008 was a busy year for Melbourne trio The Basics; they toured relentlessly to some of the most remote outback areas Australia has to offer, making new friends and fans in high schools, indigenous communities, community centres and pubs and clubs along the way.

2009 already promises to be a huge year for the band. To kick things off, their new single With This Ship was released on Tuesday 22 February and is the first song from their ominously titled forthcoming album, Keep Your Friends Close.

In April, The Basics will play some very special shows taking audiences on intimate and acoustic journeys featuring never before seen photos, videos and many unseen rarities exclusive to the tour. Tickets will be limited, so don’t miss out on The Basics showcasing their exclusive offerings from Keep Your Friends Close!

San Valentino Bordello Show @ The Globe, Brisbane 14 February 2009 – Review

Review: San Valentino Bordello Show at The Globe, Brisbane 14 February 2009
Author: Lisa Lamb

Who knows when the fifties revival began? Maybe with *The Stray Cats* in the eighties, maybe in the seventies with Grease and Happy Days, or maybe The Wintersun Festival helping bring modern rockabilly rebels and greaser bands in to the limelight, such as Paulie & his Crazy Rhythm Boys, who opened the show on the foyer stage in authentic fifites style with thier double bass, duck tails, pants and guitars under the armpits. Some music is simply meant to be heard live, and rockabilly is one of them! The energy just makes you want to get up and shake to the rythm. It was like a scene from Back to the Future and this was the McFly band discovering Rock n Roll.

On the main stage The Wretched Villains stand out from the crowd sounding like an alternate gothic rock band from the late eighties, with influences from Nick Cave and Siouxie & the Banshees. Drawing upon the deep swamp blues and British post punk they produce a dark, classic and haunting sound giving a good contrast to the lightweight fifties sounds in the foyer.
