Early birds and trivia buffs rocked up to the Jambalaya Tent on Friday to test their skill and perhaps earn a place on the panel of RocKwiz Live. Cracking the proverbial whip and vetting the various hopefuls was producer and co-host of the SBS series Brian Nankervis who after seven years with the show has it down to a fine art. Appearing across four days of the festival, Friday’s first taste had host and improv queen Julia Zemiro in top form, and featured musical guests Tim Rodgers (You Am I), Marcia Hines and Glenn Richards (Augie March), as well as a couple of impressive punters whose extensive music trivia knowledge was bested only by their brazen karaoke efforts, one contestant whipping out a harmonica and riffing with the impeccable RocKwiz Orkestra. A highly entertaining start to the afternoon, Richards, Hines and Rogers blasting Kiss’ I Wanna Rock and Roll All Nite, the icing on the cake.

Bluesfest 2011 – Day One, Featuring: ZZ Top, Los Lobos, Funky Meters, CW Stoneking and The Hands.

Despite dismal forecasts, the weather held out for music lovers as they descended onto the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm in Byron Bay, the new site for Australia’s premiere Blues and Roots Music Festival. Now extended to cover six days, campers and eager punters slowly edged their way into the grounds, with staff and volunteers doing their best to ensure that parking, setup and entry was relatively painless. The wet grounds were eclipsed by the buzz of excitement, a busy energy punctuating the usually laidback Byron feel.

Day one really hit its stride with festival favourite Xavier Rudd playing the main stage, the sounds of Let Me Be floating over the fence to greet those still passing through ticketing and security check points; a generous taste of what awaited them inside.

STONEFEST 2010 – LINEUP CHANGES ANNOUNCED

On behalf of The Panics and Cloud Control, we regretfully announce that both bands will no longer be appearing at Stonefest 2010.

The Panics’ recording schedule has changed meaning they are now required back in the studio in the US during the end of October.

Cloud Control were very much looking forward to their first Stonefest appearance in October but unfortunately, following their recent signing to UK label Infectious Records, the band are now to embark on a European tour during this period.

In their places will be the incomparable Xavier Rudd and exciting newcomers Deep Sea Arcade.

Jeff Lang @ East Brunswick Club, Melbourne – 11 September 2010 – Live Review

Review: Ben Connolly

Jeff Lang was not always the teller of disturbed tales accompanied by face-melting blues guitar shredding. There was time – in the heady post-grunge days – way back at the beginning of this 15-year-long and counting career, that Lang appeared to fancy himself as a bit of a fringe-rock crooner. His then long locks and fresh face even graced morning television and he seemed always just on the verge of tipping into the mainstream proper.

While his blues-folk-roots-rock brethren (The John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd, et al) watered down their origins after initially making the cross-over and opting for the high-exposure, high- sales paths, Lang instead maintained a steady personal path of discovery through the back alleyways which make up his self-described ‘disturbed folk’.

Along the way there have been excursions into deep south blues, rousing sea shanties, psychedelic-laden folk-pop and, more recently, ‘world music’ (with a collaboration with Malian kora player Mamadou Diabante and Indian tabla player Bobby Singh). His latest album, Chimeradour, stayed true to its Greek- mythology based namesake and married them together, but with subtle nod back to the earlier straight-rock days with some crunchy numbers laying a solid base layer.

After last years’ apocalyptic electrical storm there was a lot of speculation that PYRAMID ROCK FESTIVAL wouldn’t return to ring in the 2011 New Year. However, after the electrifying, but untimely display by Mother Nature described as a “once in a hundred year storm”, festival organisers have bunkered down to ensure that Pyramid 2010 has the capacity to deal with any out of the ordinary event.

Booking acts for Pyramid began early this year with artists from all over the globe showing their support for the festival, ensuring that this year Pyramid will undoubtedly be hosting its best line up to date with the first round of acts revealed on August 26.
