John 5 “The Art of Malice” CD Review

Review: Ben Hosking
While ‘The Art of Malice’ is an instrumental album; you probably don’t need to be a guitarist to know who John 5 is. John 5 has played guitar for Marilyn Manson and is the current axeman in Rob Zombie’s band. Rubbing shoulders with two of the freakiest dudes in modern rock/metal surely goes some way to explaining John 5’s compulsion to shave his eyebrows and apply the face paint.

The Art of Malice is John 5’s third solo effort and shows the country-infused chicken-pickin’ shredder continuing to expand his chops and grow as a songwriter. Where ‘Requiem’ and Songs for Sanity affirmed his place in the pantheon of interesting and intense guitar instrumentalists, ‘The Art…” will go a long way to securing his position as an equally interesting songwriter as well.

PARKLIFE 2010 – Line-Up Announcement

Click here for dates and tickets
Here it is, the official first line-up announcement for Parklife 2010. We’ve mentioned it before, but it’s their tenth birthday this year, and it looks like the celebrations are set to go off with a bang. As promised, there are quite a few surprises on the roster of artists announced so far, with organisers paying closer attention to the more indie/alternative-inspired musical tastes of their punters, as well as packing in a whole bunch of more traditionally Parklife-y electro and hip hop acts.

The Black Keys – “Brothers” [CD Review]

Review: Natalie Salvo
This is a record review about The Black Keys. But you already knew that didn’t you? So while we’re giving you ‘helpful’ but unnecessary statements, “Brothers” is the sixth studio album from the Ohio-based blues-rock duo.

The pair has been rather busy as of late with guitarist, Dan Auerbach dropping a solo album while Patrick Carney produced the aptly titled side project, Drummer. The boys then collaborated with a bunch of rappers for the hip-hop record, Blakroc.

Opeth – Australian tour – November 2009

Opeth   In a metal world starved for integrity, intelligence and beauty, Opeth shine like a beacon through dark clouds. They are artistic visionaries and their transcendent live shows have gone down in music folklore.

Combining towering blasts of blackened death metal with the intricacy of 1970s prog rock and the more subtle, gentle beauty of folk, Opeth continue to create epic and iconic music; inventing and reinventing the rules as they go along.

No wonder the metal world stops whatever it’s doing and pauses with bated breath each time the band announce an album or tour. In just over a decade and across nine studio albums, they have become the standard bearer for modern metal.

CD Review: Heavy Water Experiments

Review by: Stuart Blythe

Heavy Water Experiments   Stemming from LA, Heavy Water Experiments offer an extraordinary debut album. Primarily fitting, but not limited to, the psychedelic, progressive indie/rock genre.

From the floating, trippy and heavy bass of opening tracks GoldenThroat and Mirror the Sky, the psychedelic experimental rock is delivered with style. But there are surprises ahead with tracks the like of Anodyne and Neverlove that are psych pop rock/trance with well layered grooves that are more anthem rock.

alice cooper    Alice Cooper has been described as a legend in one’s own time is certainly a blatantly abused cliché, but no one has taken a vivid imagination and unusual persona to the people with as much controversy and success. Call him Master of Shock Rock, Black Humorist Supreme, or simply one of the era’s great showmen, his mark has been undeniable. Lennard Promotions, in association with Music Max, proudly announces the forthcoming Alice Cooper’s Theatre Of Death Australian Tour in August 2009.

Live Review: True Live + The Kidney Thieves @ The Zoo, Brisbane 4 July 2009

True Live @ The Zoo , Brisbane 4 July 2009
Supported by: The Kidney Thieves.
Author: Jose Eduardo Cruz

True Live   Saturday was a very cold and windy night in Brisbane, which would keep many a punter at home. Being Brisbane anything short of perfect weather keeps most concert goers away from live venues. Keeping this in mind, the attendance level was a testament to the calibre of performance we were about to witness.

Supporting act, The Kidney Thieves are definitely not shy or suffer from stage fright. These guys have been around for a while now and have developed a nice following in their home town. Charismatic or maybe a bit insane is how you would

describe their front man, Jack Muzak. You can’t call these guys a warm up band; they are more like a set fire to the stage band and hope the next band can still use it. Their sound takes me back to a Faith No More era, where sounds and styles blended. Sex Panther an 8 minute epic, riddled with so many time changes that you forget which song it is, illustrated this bands wild nature. The Kidney Thieves equal fun.
