One of the great things about Bluesfest is that the musicians who travel a long way from around the globe to get here have a brilliant time and enjoy the opportunity to see acts they have never seen, and to meet and collaborate with artists that inspire them. Backstage they are treated to unique Byron/Bluesfest hospitality and have a chance to learn about Australia’s Indigenous peoples through magnificent artworks placed throughout the greenroom. Being such a friendly festival it is not unusual to see guest artists out in the crowd enjoying the atmosphere.

This year is the 25th Anniversary of Byron Bay Bluesfest and possibly the biggest Bluesfest held to date. Arriving at the festival you immediately realise the size and scale of the event. Huge camping areas teaming with festival goers, friendly volunteers directing cars to parking areas and spreading an infectious happiness to all that pass by. The music emanating from the venue as you approach the gates. The blended aromas of various cuisines wafting from the food stalls and the overall “feel good” vibe in the air.

DIESEL PROJECT BLUES NATIONAL TOUR – JULY/AUGUST 2009

diesel    In the great blues tradition of ‘Short Cool Ones’, the 1996 Gold-selling ARIA Award nominated blues release from diesel and Chris Wilson (under the Wilson diesel moniker), diesel returns once again to the studio and his roots to produce ‘Saturday Suffering Fools’.

Slated for a July 3 release through Liberation and comprising some

freshly unearthed blues gems and some original songs, the record features long-term diesel band members Richie Vez and Lee Moloney, as well as Bernie Bremond (ex the Injectors and an integral part of diesel’s musical history) and father Hank Lizotte, along with brothers Mike and Brian Lizotte on horns. Amazingly, Bremond returns to the fold more than 20 years after he and diesel first teamed up as the Injectors and moved from Perth to Sydney to seek fame & fortune in the late 80’s.

Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam
Blues/Rock (UK)

Davy Knowles   Every so often a truly explosive, blues-steeped star comes slamming down the pike. The ’60s were filled with acts – from Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page – but each generation has since added to the legacy. Think of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Susan Tedeschi, Warren Haynes and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Now think of Davy Knowles. Think long and hard and toast a bright future. Fronting his band Back Door Slam, the 22-year-old British phenomenon with an encyclopaedic grasp of blues-rock draws on influences from Robert Johnson to

Rory Gallagher and gives it a fresh Celtic feel along the way.

The Byron Bay Blues festival is truly an event and shouldn’t be missed! The new venue is roomy and the event is massive!! Along with the fantastic musical lineup, roaming entertainment and food stalls that sell really good food, I have too tip my hat too the organisers… the complete setup is run with precision.  Transport, security, service, sanity, schedule, direction… everything was organised, ensuring that the average punter had an memorable experience!

The opening night saw Jeff Martin, Xavier Rudd, Keith Urban and John Butler whipping the crowd into musical bliss.  Wilco rocked! and Buddy Guy delivered a mind-blowing gritty set of blues…
