The Jezabels – Prisoner National Album Tour – October/November 2011

The JezabelsThe Jezabels
The pathways leading to the GW Mclennan Stage were shut down on Saturday when The Jezabels executed their set at Splendour In The Grass, due to too much traffic. Those who did make it in were treated to one of the greatest sets of their career. Having spent a good deal of 2011 touring overseas in the UK, USA, Europe, Canada & Singapore The Jezabels return to stages here at home in October to launch their debut LP Prisoner (in store independently through MGM September 16th 2011).

Powerful, poetic, bold and pure, Prisoner is the first full-length release from the Sydney based quartet. A stunning collection of songs that showcases maturity in song writing, well beyond their young years.

The Belligerents Debut EP Release and National Tour – March/April 2011 [Tour News]

Less Arty More Party - The BelligerentsLess Arty More Party
Explosive Brisbane five-piece The Belligerents are set to take their dance frenzied, disco-pop live show on the road for a national tour in March and April to celebrate the release of their much anticipated debut EP Less Arty More Party.

In 2010, the band infused the hearts and dancing shoes of audiences; supporting acts such as Metronomy (UK), Neon Indian (USA), Breakbot (France), Yacht Club DJs, The Paper Scissors and DZ. They blew the minds of festival revellers holding their own alongside the likes of Little Red, Shout Out Louds (Sweden), Regurgitator, Miami Horror, The Jezabels, Dappled Cities, Urthboy, Parades and the John Steel Singers.

The boys have played countless mind-blowing sets on renowned stages and at house parties – occasionally invoking partial nudity. Also in the midst of this wild year, the band got creatively intimate with Brisbane producer Timeshare at Temple Street studio and recorded a deeply charismatic four track EP. Channelling inspiration from Foals, The Rapture and Talking Heads, The Belligerents have crafted an entrancing musical work of art suitable for any party.

This month The Jezabels delivered their new EP, Dark Storm, which hit #1 on the iTunes album charts this week. Interview with Nik Kaloper of The Jezabels

2nd May 2010: Nik Kaloper (NK) of The Jezabels tells Stuart Blythe (LMM) about band life, touring and lessons learnt along the way.

The JezabelsLMM: You’ll be touring with Tegan and Sara on their Australian visit throughout May. Tell us about the tour and how it came about.

NK: Well, we were lucky enough to tour with Tegan & Sara January 2009 and we seemed to be a good fit for the bill. We really enjoyed what they were doing, and apparently vice versa – we were able to keep in touch and jump back on the bill this time around. It’s even better this time though, because we get to go all the way out to Adelaide and Perth with them – even playing Groovin the Moo festival together, very exciting times. Despite the tour being longer than the last one – we’re looking forward to relaxing in some of the cities. Because there are two shows in Brisbane and Melbourne, we’ll have an afternoon that doesn’t involve driving (something to be cherished when you’re on tour).

The evening was kicked off by Sydney band The Jezabels who warmed up an initially reluctant crowd with their explosively energetic indie pop set. Front woman Hayley Mary won over the audience with her physical performance and raw vocals with solid rhythmic guitar from Sam Lockwood, a whimsical keyboard backing from Heather Shannon and wildly powerful drumming from Nik Kaloper.

Trailing the infectious first single ‘Hurt Me’, Easy To Love further cements the band’s signature drum/guitar shuffle, highlighting the effective dynamics of a well-placed silence, filled with the haunting and harmoniously sweet backing vocals of keyboardist Heather Shannon. Playground Weekender
[Photo: Arfy Papadam]
Within only a matter of moments after disembarking the ferry, it becomes immediately apparent why Playground Weekender (PW) has been the recipient of the “Best Crowd & Atmosphere” award for the last two years running.

PW organisers pride themselves on compiling a line-up that will attract a friendly and laid back crowd, and they know their craft well. The result is, quite bluntly and refreshingly, a music festival without all the jerks.

Over the four long and hot days festival goers remained pumped, happy and, as far as intoxicated crowds go, fairly mature. Even during the headliners when the main stage crowd was in full force, there was little pushing and shoving, people seemed pretty considerate of each other.

With little requirement for much control, the friendly crowd seemed slightly at odds with the size of the police force throughout the weekend. Officers walking sniffer dogs through festival grounds among the punters simply enjoying their lunch was an unusual sight. Though despite their numbers and high visibility, police were friendly and relaxed. Security were equally laid back in general.

BLUEJUICE
Sydney’s BLUEJUICE are the ultimate complement to the Playground Weekender lineup – perfectly epitomizing the festivals maverick, eclectic feel. Whilst fundamentally a rock band, they also stir into their pot a mixture of hip hop with pop, ska, punk and disco.

It’s been a huge two years which as seen the band break into the top of Triple J playlists with favorites ‘Vitriol’ and Reductionist’, before becoming global internet sensations with their hilarious skipping video for the hook laden cross over hit ‘Broken Leg’, which went onto be a top 30 ARIA hit with two ARIA award nominations. As unpredictable as a day spent without taking your medication, BLUEJUICE put on an infamously energetic live show…

OK GO (USA)
Chicago band OK Go combine off-kilter guitars, Pixies/Cars fetishism, and straightforward power pop sensibilities to produce eccentric, catchy songs.

OK Go wrote the book on how to turn a creative low budget video into a viral Internet phenomenon. The video for ‘Here It Goes Again’ saw OK Go pull of some incredible synchronized dance moves on multiple treadmills. It became one of the most watched videos of all time with over 49 million view on YouTube and a 2007 Grammy Award for ‘Best Short-Form Music Video’. That exposure helping the track break the Top 40 in both the US and the UK. The four piece are getting ready and set to go get you dancing at Playground Weekender!

MISTA SAVONA & PRINCE ALLA (JAMAICA)
Leading exponents of roots reggae, dancehall and heavyweight dub music MISTA SAVONA will raise the roof with percussion bliss and crazy good songs from international guest artist – reggae royalty – PRINCE ALLA. Straight from Jamaica, a serious, humble and genuine Rastaman.

NICKODEMUS (NEW YORK)
A mainstay of the New York underground, NICKODEMUS is a DJ and producer who co-founded the now legendary Turntable on the Hudson (the longest running weekly party in NY) parties with the simple edict of playing “music with soul”. NICKODEMUS will be bringing his ‘spinning at sea’ set to Playground Weekender blending Latin, Afro-funk, hip-hop, big beat, house, funk, reggae, broken beat, soul and more.

LOST VALENTINOS
Formed in Sydney in 2005 LOST VALENTINOS quickly established themselves as one of the hottest acts in on Australia’s indie scene. The immediate success of their self tiled EP, and the follow up ‘Damn & Damn Again’ nailed their reputation as a gang of rogue’s intent on forging their own original sound. Current single ‘Serio’ is out now and taken from their debut album ‘Cities of Gold’. With punk intensity and noise-drenched melodies, a LOST VALENTINOS set is for young adventurers seeking a new treasure. Dig deep with them at Playground Weekender!

KING TIDE
Renowned for their brilliant high-energy shows, KING TIDE have earned their fan base on the live scene. Using reggae as the compass guiding them to new and wonderful musical lands. Renowned reggae and roots influenced band, KING TIDE are the first Australian band to be signed to prestigious UK record label, Urban Sedated.
“I love me hip hop but Reggaes me life. We’re gonna have a Reggae party tonight.” Tony Hughes.

THE HOLIDAYS

Time for a change of scenery? It’s time for THE HOLIDAYS. After only a handful of shows, Sydney’s FBI radio latched on to the band, then Triple J put them on high rotation with their self titled single. THE HOLIDAYS ball had begun rolling in a big way. They soon achieved airplay on several eagle-eyed US stations, which led to the ‘Artist of the Week’ billing in influential US trade publication A&R Worldwide. They are very much a band in the ‘next big thing’ bracket. We are sure you won’t be disappointed by their performance at Del Rio Resort.
“We play every gig like it’s our first gig’’ said Will Magnus.
