The Fray and Kings Of Leon top latest ARIA Charts

The Fray’s single “You Found Me” has achieved simultaneous number ones, taking over top spot on the ARIA Singles and Digital Track Charts this week. No strangers to success on our shores, their single “How To Save A Life” peaked at #2 on the ARIA Singles Chart in February 2007. On the ARIA Album Chart, it’s Kings Of Leon dominating number one for a further week – their album “Only By The Night” has now spent 19 weeks in the top 4, eight weeks at number one, and was the highest charting album on the 2008 ARIA Top 100 Album Chart. André Rieu’s “Live In Australia” continues to monopolise the ARIA Music DVD chart, stringing together 7 consecutive weeks at one.

This week’s ARIA Album Chart top 5 has Kings Of Leon at 1, P!nk’s “Funhouse” at 2 and Twilight Soundtrack at 3. Moving up a spot to 4 is Lady GaGa’s “The Fame” and rounding out the 5, AC/DC’s “Black Ice”. Debuting at 21 is Taylor Swift with her US #1 album “Fearless” and at 33, Antony & The Johnsons with “The Crying Light”. Miley Cyrus re-enters the top 40 at 36 with “Breakout”.

The Rebirth Of Venus & The Big O Festival – Ben Lee talks with Elize Strydom

This Boy’s In Love –
by Elize Strydom
benleerebirthalbumcover Ben Lee is in a good place. Granted, he’s in the honeymoon phase. Literally. As 2008 drew to a close Lee married his sweetheart, Ione Skye, in a Hindu ceremony in India. Add to that a shiny new album (The Re-Birth of Venus due out February 7th), a pop song on the radio and a national university tour (The Big O Festival) and you’ll start to realise why he’s so damn smiley all the time. Oh yes, this boy’s in love.

“For me, being in a stable relationship has allowed me to relax in a way that I didn’t even realise I wasn’t relaxed before. Probably because I was just putting all of my energy into chasing chicks! When you find someone that you trust and you love and you’re inspired by and you’re attracted to there’s a kind of support that can allow you to go to a deeper level. So I think with my records there’s starting to be this sound of relaxation in the music which is really nice.”

Indeed. The Re-Birth of Venus is Lee’s seventh solo album and his fifth with Chicago based producer Brad Wood.

“I’ve tried other producers but working with Brad is like coming home. We trust each other and it’s hard to build that trust. It’s not intellectual which I like. You just get together with friends and you make music and that’s how it works.”

For someone who started making records when he was 14, Lee is showing no signs of hitting the brakes. In terms of commercial success, it’s been a slow burning career for the guy that some just love to hate (do I need to mention that song by the Ataris?). In 2005 Lee won an ARIA award for Best Male Artist and Catch My Disease was the most played song on Australian radio. Does the thought of offering yet another album daunt him?

“These last few years I’ve been so wrapped up in process of making records I’ve become quite divorced from the anticipation of sharing them. I’m constantly chasing this experience that I want out of making records and music and I’m getting less and less concerned with how they’re received. I don’t feel at all that I’m doing it for the sake of it.”

The first single lifted from the new album (I Love Pop Music) reads like a summary of Lee’s world view with lines like:
Global warming threatens life as we know it Our leaders have not committed to a plan of action on renewable energy
and:
Religious intolerance creating geo-political instability.
Our lives are accelerating as we fall out of touch with nature and ancient myth.
Try singing along to that, kids! He rounds it out with the chorus:
I love pop music, sprinkle sugar through it Philosophy that you can dance to

Hmmm, please explain.

“One way or another I’ve always been interested in embracing the classic elements of a pop song which are about the bubblegum stuff that just make you feel good and at the same time tried to subvert it a little bit and add new left field twists to it. So I think that song just continues that idea.”

Catch Ben Lee at the Big O Festival touring universities around the country during Orientation Week.

ARIA unveils 2008’s Top 100 Singles, Albums & Digital Tracks, Top 50 Music DVDs

“Low”, the double platinum smash from Flo Rida featuring T-Pain, has topped the ARIA 2008 Top 100 Singles and Digital Track Charts*. “Low” spent three weeks at number one, an incredible 19 weeks in the top 10 and 37 weeks in the top 50, ensuring it was the dominant single of 2008. Flo Rida also had a further two singles within the top 100 and the album “Mail On Sunday” landed at #66 on the ARIA 2008 Top 100 Album Chart*.

The number one album of 2008 came from Kings Of Leon – the US rock band’s fourth studio album “Only By The Night” outselling all other releases to claim top spot on the ARIA 2008 Top 100 Album Chart. The band’s dominance was clearly evident by the success of the first two singles lifted from the album, with “Sex On Fire” spending 4 weeks at number one during the latter part of ’08, finishing at #5 on the end of year chart, with “Use Somebody” at #30. Chalking up sales in excess of 350,000 units, “Only By The Night” spent 4 weeks at number one and has not left the top 5 since its release. Topping off an incredible year for the band, their previous albums “Because Of The Times” and “Aha Shake Heartbreak” landed at #46 and #81 respectively in the end of year chart.

Gabriella Cilmi and The Presets sweep the 2008 ARIA Awards

The winners of the 2008 ARIA Awards, proudly presented by Motorola, have been announced and pop and electronic dance music have ruled the day in the form of multiple winners GABRIELLA CILMI and THE PRESETS. They join an eclectic group of ARIA Award recipients who include THE LIVING END, KASEY CHAMBERS and SHANE NICHOLSON, NICK CAVE and GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, THE PANICS and BLISS N’ ESO, among others.

In what is an extraordinary success story, vocal powerhouse GABRIELLA CILMI, a pop singer who had yet to emerge on the Australian music landscape this time last year, has taken out an incredible 6 ARIA Awards on the back of her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, and her breakthrough smash hit single, Sweet About Me. The Melbourne-born, London-based Cilmi has received ARIA Awards in the categories of BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE (Sweet About Me), BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Lessons to be Learned), BEST POP RELEASE (Lessons to be Learned), HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE (Sweet About Me) and the coveted ARIA Award for SINGLE OF THE YEAR for Sweet About Me. With the world at her feet, GABRIELLA CILMI’s ARIA Awards triumph is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement for the Dandenong girl who has just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Electronic duo THE PRESETS has also had a cracking year with the release of their widely acclaimed second album Apocalypso. They fought off stiff competition in the prestigious categories of ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST GROUP to take out both for the hugely popular Apocalypso. The album has also seen THE PRESETS receive the pointy trophy in the category of BEST DANCE RELEASE taking their tally to 3 ARIA Awards (plus 2 ARIA Artisan Awards, including Producer of the Year for Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). The self-produced Apocalypso, which spawned the gritty hit single My People, has sealed THE PRESETS as Australia’s premiere electronic act.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds Bio

nickcaveandbadseedpromo
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds available at Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

Arguably Australia’s most successful cultural export of the last twenty years, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – both collectively and individually – are also the most prolific. In the last eighteen months alone, Nick Cave, alongside fellow Bad Seeds; Warren Ellis (violin, mandocaster) Martyn Casey (bass) and Jim Sclavunus (drums), have released an album and toured under the name Grinderman – a bump and grind exaggeration of the Bad Seeds groove. Warren Ellis and Nick Cave have also written and released the soundtrack to the Brad Pitt produced movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; bassist Martyn Casey has revived his former role in the reunited Triffids performing at last year’s Sydney Festival; and the longest serving Bad Seed, Mick Harvey (guitar and organ), has released a solo album (his fourth) entitled Two of Diamonds. Harvey has also performed as guest musician at The Triffids reunion shows and most recently has been remixing the entire Bad Seeds back catalogue in 5.1 surround sound.
