ARIA Chart News, w/c 23 February 2009

Bushfire Aid: Artists For The Bushfire Appeal has debuted at number one on the ARIA Compilation Chart, in an incredible show of support from the Australian public. With all artists and songwriters featured on the album donating their songs, and music retailers throwing their support behind it, Sony Music proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal through the charitable arm of the Australian Sony Group of Companies, The Sony Foundation.

Flo Rida storms the ARIA Singles Chart on debut this week, landing top spot with his single “Right Round”, which features singer Ke$ha. It’s also number one on the ARIA Digital Track Chart. “Right Round” is Flo Rida’s second number one single in Australia following “Low”, which spent 3 weeks at number one and was 2008’s highest selling single. It is the first number one debut since Kylie Minogue’s “2 Hearts” in November 2007, and is also the third digital only release to top the ARIA Singles Chart.

Having just achieved her first ARIA top 10 single and number one album, Lily Allen can add top 5 single to her list of conquests, with “The Fear” moving up to 5 from 8 on both the ARIA Singles and Digital Track Chart. With 3 singles in the top 40 this week, Lady GaGa moves up to #9 with former number one “Poker Face” – it’s sixteenth week in the top 10! It also hits #10 on the ARIA Digital Track Chart. Beyonce’s “Halo” is one of this week’s big movers, up 6 spots to #13 this week’s singles chart and up to #12 on the digital track chart.

Lily Allen’s “It’s Not Me, It’s You” holds at number one for a second week on the ARIA Album Chart, the album now a worldwide smash. It has achieved top spot in the UK, number 5 in the US, number 3 in Ireland, number 6 in Switzerland, and top 10 in both Belgium and New Zealand. Making the ARIA Album Chart top 10 for the first time since 1971 is Leonard Cohen with new album “The Essential 3.0”, up from 11 to 9. Back in ’71 it was “Songs Of Love And Hate” that made him a household name. Also continuing to move up is Coldplay, returning to the top 10 for the first time since September last year, with “Viva La Vida” up from 13 to 10. It has now spent sixteen weeks in the top 10. This week’s biggest mover is “We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.” from Jason Mraz, up 9 spots to 22, and Katy Perry moves up from 28 to 21 with “One of The Boys”.

This week’s ARIA Music DVD Chart sees another top 10 entry from André Rieu, with “Dancing Through The Skies” debuting at #6. His releases “Live In Australia” and “Live In Maastricht II” hold at 1 and 2 respectively, whilst P!nk sits at #3 with “P!nk – Live In Europe” and #4 with “Live From Wembley Arena”.
