ARIA Chart News, w/c 9 February 2009

Kings Of Leon’s album “Only By The Night” has become the most successful charting album since James Blunt’s “Back To Beldam” hit the ARIA Charts in 2005/2006. “Only By The Night” has now been placed at number one for ten weeks, including six consecutive weeks, for a total of twenty one weeks in the album chart.

This week’s ARIA Album Chart top 5 holds from last week, and returning to the top 10 are three big albums … the “Packed To The Rafters” soundtrack, which is up to 8 from 14, Nickelback’s “Dark Horse, which rebounds to #9, and MGMT’s “Oracular Spectacular”, up from 13 to 10 after peaking at #6 last October. Akon’s “Freedom” moves up from 27 to 20 and following her recent high profile promotional visit, Duffy’s “Rockferry” re-enters the top 40 at #33. Also bouncing back into the top 40 is Seal’s “Soul” at 40.

The top two singles on this week’s ARIA Singles Chart are carving out a local chart success story greater on our shores than on their home front! The Fray’s “You Found Me” has now chalked up 3 weeks at number one in Australia, and is still climbing the US Billboard chart, up to #7 this week. Similarly, Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” peaked at #4 in the US and has blasted its way from 8 to 2 on this week’s ARIA Singles Chart.

Also on the singles front, The All-American Rejects have achieved their greatest chart success in Australia to date, with “Gives You Hell” moving up from 12 to 5. Local lads Empire Of The Sun also attain their first ARIA top 10 single with “Walking On A Dream” which is up from 14 to 10 after 23 weeks of release! They’ve also managed to chart two singles in the top 25, with their second single “We Are The People” up from 40 to 24 this week. Other singles on an upward trajectory this week include Cassie Davis and “Like It Loud”, Lily Allen’s “The Fear”, “Everybody’s Free” from Global Deejays featuring Rosalla, “Eh Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)” from Lady GaGa, “Rock & Roll” from Eric Hutchison and Fall Out Boy’s “America’s Suitehearts”.

The big successes on this week’s ARIA Digital Track Chart include The All-American Rejects, up from 12 to 5 with “Gives You Hell”, Empire of The Sun’s “Walking On A Dream, up from 13 to 8, and Cassie Davis scoring her first ARIA top 10 result with “Like It Loud” racing from 21 to 10.

On the ARIA Music DVD front, Andre Rieu continues to build on his impressive record, with “Live In Australia” holding at #1 for 9 consecutive weeks and new release “Live In Maastricht II” debuting at 2 this week.
