Shapeshifter @ the Hi-Fi, Brisbane, Friday 11 September 2009
Review by: Will Alexander – Photo: Jose Eduardo Cruz

ShapeShifterIt was New Zealand night at the Hi-Fi Brisbane last Friday, and if the accents didn’t give it away then the multitude of girls walking around screaming out for their countrymen did. Irrespective of how bad (and hilarious) the Flight of the Conchords make us look though, there’s no shortage of amazing New Zealander entertainers out there and Shapeshifter are undoubtedly some of the finest. Shapeshifter has earned no small degree of fame after the release of three albums, and you get the sense listening to them that they’ve come close to perfecting an electronically heavy but still organic sound. Unmistakably a drum and bass act on their studio albums, you more often than not see them referred to as a ‘dance’ act in live reviews. This may seem like an oversimplification of their sound but in reality the rising and falling of the beats is energetic and soulful – and doesn’t come across as straight drum and bass at all.

Australian artists continue their reign on the ARIA Singles & Album Charts

In another huge week for Australian artists, Guy Sebastian spends a further week on top of the ARIA Singles Chart with “Like It Like That”. It becomes his second-longest running No.1 single after his initial career hit “Angels Brought Me Here”, which spent three weeks straight at the top in December 2003. Jimmy Barnes continues his domination of the ARIA Album Chart, achieving a second week at No.1 with “The Rhythm And The Blues” and notching up a solo tally of thirty-one weeks at the top of the chart. This is equal to Delta Goodrem‘s total, with John Farnham the only Australian artist ahead, accumulating a massive forty-seven weeks on top of the chart over eight albums.

Live Review | Sugar Army with Buick Six @ The Troubadour, Brisbane 4 September 2009

Sugar Army supported by Buick Six @ The Troubadour 04.09.09
By José Eduardo Cruz

sa2smallBuick Six are relatively new within the industry, but do not be fooled by the anonymity. They are a three piece local Brisbane band that has a fresh sound, or at the very minimum, is doing what other bands are doing within the genre, but just that much better to gain rapid notoriety. Three piece bands will always have the difficult task of producing a full sound, which is why many three piece bands turn into a four piece. That being said, Buick Six have an incredible full sound for a three piece which carries them throughout their whole set. The strength in their sound lies in the ability to create shades of colour in their music. The bass player grooved, the drummer walked off covered in sweat and the guitarist challenged a punter to jump on stage mid set after being asked to play Daddy Cool. Every member had the confidence needed to survive in this game, but remained humble enough to greet punters that thanked them throughout the night. These guys are very young and deserve much greater recognition which should come if they continue to perform such energetic shows filled with genuine artistic flair.

lesclaypool   Australian lovers of twisted four string bass excursions rejoice! Les Claypool heads to Australia this December bringing with him the arsenal of complex rhythms and death defying melodic twists and turns that feature on his latest solo opus Of Fungi And Foe.

When it comes to taking the bass guitar far beyond the usual confines and out into the musical stratosphere, no one over the past twenty five years has come close to matching the absolute mind snapping brilliance of bass player extraordinaire Les Claypool.

From his early work with Primus through the eighties to his latest soon to be released solo album Of Fungi and Foe, Claypool has redefined with humour, intelligence and above all sheer talent, what being a bass player in a modern rock outfit is all about.

Jimmy Barnes Is Officially a Legend

The Rhythm and The Blues debuts at #1 on the ARIA Album Charts

Jimmy Barnes   The phrase gets bandied around a lot in connection with his name, but it’s now official. Jimmy Barnes is Australia’s greatest music legend, racking up his ninth #1 solo album with The Rhythm and The Blues (out now through Liberation).

Its debut at #1 on the ARIA Album Charts this week confirms Jimmy Barnes has secured more #1 albums in the ARIA charts than any Australian artist ever. Factor in Jimmy’s two chart-toppers from his Chisel days and he and U2 jostle it out with eleven ARIA number ones for first place.

Rock legend Jimmy Barnes creates ARIA Chart history

For the first time since May last year, Australian artists take out the top spot on both the ARIA Singles and Album Charts. Guy Sebastian lands the No.1 position on the ARIA Singles Chart with “Like It Like That”, his fourth chart-topping single, making him the only Australian Idol participant to have achieved such a feat. This is the 19th ARIA #1 single to feature an Australian Idol contestant in the six years since the start of the series. In the history of the ARIA charts, Kylie and Delta are the only Aussies with more chart topping singles than Guy, with a tally of ten and eight respectively.
