Chaos In The Cafe Creates a Night To Remember – Nightcafe : 4-6 November 2009

CHAOS IN THE CAFE CREATES A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Brisbane Powerhouse presents Nightcafe – A Dancenorth Production

Get ready to be swept away by a night of dancing, live music and conviviality that you won’t forget in a hurry, as Dancenorth, accompanied by five-piece band Waiting For Guinness, brings Nightcafe to the Powerhouse Theatre from Wed 4 – Fri 6 Nov.

Originally choreographed by Gavin Webber and dancers, with remount direction by Michelle Ryan, Nightcafe begins in a darkened nightclub before opening. Staff are cleaning, stragglers from the night before are sleeping, streamers and balloons still dangle from above, all echoes of an earlier party.

As the club slowly wakes, the dancers and the band whip the stage into a chaotic frenzy – furniture flies, drinks abound and conversations flow – or is it the other way round? Drinks flowing, conversations flying and furniture going who knows where!

Hailing from Townsville, Dancenorth are one of Australia’s fastest growing contemporary dance-theatre companies. They won ‘Australia’s Best Dance Ensemble’ at the 2008 Green Room Awards and were nominated in several categories at the Australian Dance Awards and the Helpmann Awards.

Remarkable musicians, Waiting for Guinness, help to amp up the party atmosphere with their sumptuous and idiosyncratic blend of tortured jazz, gypsy blues, gallows humour and Balkans boogie. Since their humble beginning, busking in Sydney, the band has played major festivals across the country, from Port Fairy to Woodford as well as being invited to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and Switzerland’s International Buskers Festival.

So, come and party with performers D’Arcy Andrews, Luke Hanna, Danah-Jane Matthews, Sally Blatchford, Jessica Jefferies and Adam Gardiner from Wed 4 – Fri 6 Nov as the Nightcafe opens for business. For tickets go to brisbanepowerhouse.org or call 07 3358 8600
