CD Review: Heavy Water Experiments

Review by: Stuart Blythe

Heavy Water Experiments   Stemming from LA, Heavy Water Experiments offer an extraordinary debut album. Primarily fitting, but not limited to, the psychedelic, progressive indie/rock genre.

From the floating, trippy and heavy bass of opening tracks GoldenThroat and Mirror the Sky, the psychedelic experimental rock is delivered with style. But there are surprises ahead with tracks the like of Anodyne and Neverlove that are psych pop rock/trance with well layered grooves that are more anthem rock.

ROZ PAPPALARDO and The Wayward Gentlemen- Album Release and 2009 Tour Dates

Roz Pappalardo   Roz Pappalardo has a secret.

With spurs. When she’s not on the road as her Women In Docs alter ego, she indulges her inner cowgirl with a raucous alt country side project. With boys!

The Wayward Gentlemen involve some of the finest country players South East Queensland have to offer: Rob Sherwood (Kristy Apps Band), Silas Palmer (Daybridges, Spot The Dog, Women In Docs), Lincoln Retallack (Amy’s Bass, The Slides) and Aaron Millard (Jeremiah); handpicked from some of Brisbane’s finest drinking establishments…

Rogerthat

Rogerthat is a rock-reggae band that shakes every room they play in. A band that could have come from just about any era. Their contemporaries could be the Black Crowes or the Black Keys. Anything from the Woodstock era, Marley and Lee Scratch Perry or the steel blues of Muddy Waters (circa Electric Mud)… if you could mash the raw electric, psychedelic rock-reggae rep’s of those, you’d get close to the quartet

Rogerthat are back in Australia in August and Sept to mix their peyote and melt minds. On a national tour to prop the release of The Desert’s Call, their debut album (out thru MGM).

The band are currently in Europe for a month long run after smoking it in Canada – 9 gigs in 2 weeks thru West Canada to rooms full of RT converts.

CD Review: The Little Stevies – Love Your Band

by Felicity Rennie –

The Little Stevies - Love Your Band    I am not convinced that the use of a rainstick (or a very convincing similar effect) in the opening strains of Sunshower, the first track and first single from The Little Stevies’ debut album Love Your Band, is a coincidence. An instrument noted for its relaxation qualities, it says a lot about the album that follows, which, like a rainstick, is carefully constructed, filled with surprise gems, and is unequivocally soothing. This is a strong, inspired debut from a very promising three piece.

CD Review: Karnivool “Sound Awake”

Review by: Stuart Blythe
karnivoolcdIt’s been four years in the making but after setting a new benchmark in Australian heavy rock with their debut album “Themata”, the pressure was on. Fortunately the wait has been worth it!!

Re-enlisting Themata’s producer Forrester Savell, the album was recorded at Perth’s Blackbird and Kingdom Studios over several months, and later mixed at Melbourne’s famous Sing Sing Studios’. Savell has done a superb job on this record with each band member clear in the mix, and the various landscapes of sound captured impeccably. Singer Ian Kenny relays “It was a no-brainer in the end. Once we made the decision to let him into our space, we really relied on him to don the heavy black boots and start kicking heads, which he did. Plus, the guy’s got the goods musically – he’s like the cleaner who comes in after a murder.”

Stuart: Hey guys, great to see you back touring Australia. This is your second visit here, do you have any “stand out” memories from last years Australian tour?

Simon: All the shows last time were a ton of fun. we couldn’t believe how much people knew our records and everyone knows how to have a killer evening. one of the venues flooded on the day of the gig which was bizarre but apart from soggy, crinkled feet it all ran pretty smoothly.

What we really love to do is write and perform and since my life has taken me far away, across the seas, to the desert that is Los Angeles, we have to get it when we can!!!
