Live Review: Lisa Mitchell @ The Tivoli, Brisbane – 7th May 2010

Review by: Lauren Sherritt
Lisa MitchellHeading to Lisa Mitchell’s gig at The Tivoli on Friday night, I held some pretty general expectations as to what the “Oh! Hark!” tour would have in store for its Brisbane leg. Some of these expectations were met delightfully, others were interestingly challenged, and in all it was a memorable experience.

The Tivoli is undoubtedly the kind of venue you would expect to suit such a whimsical songstress as Mitchell. Upon entering the historic building it was easy to see, with gauzy material curtained from the stage’s rigging and washed colourfully by the bright lights, that this was true. Through strong sets by Georgia Fair and Boy and Bear, who both proved to be stunning choices as a lead in to Mitchell’s set and are definitely bands worth keeping an eye on, the sell-out audience waited, tantalized by the promise such a setting held for a beautiful evening with Mitchell.

Susan Boyle achieves a further milestone as Mumford & Sons and Muse blast up
ARIA Charts…

Holding tight at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart for a tenth consecutive week is Susan Boyle’s mammoth debut release “I Dreamed A Dream”, which becomes only the second album since 2000 to remain at number one for ten weeks straight. The Moulin Rouge soundtrack accrued eleven weeks running in 2001, with three other releases chalking up ten or more non-consecutive weeks at number one in the last decade. The most recent album to eclipse the ten-week mark was “Only By The Night” from Kings Of Leon, which spent fourteen weeks in peak position over three instalments in 2008/2009. Dominating the ARIA Singles Chart for the fifth week straight is Owl City‘s double platinum smash “Fireflies”, which also achieves its sixth week at the top of the ARIA Digital Tracks Chart.

BIG DAY OUT WRAPS UP FOR 2010

It was our biggest year to date, cities selling out faster than ever before. Eighteen years since our inception (and, unbelievably, over 100 shows later) 40,000 music fans headed to Perth’s Claremont Showgrounds today, in order to catch the hottest names in music – and bringing the 2010 leg of the BIG DAY OUT to a triumphant close.

Review: BIG DAY OUT Gold Coast 2010 – BDO

BDO

An introduction to BIG DAY OUT out need not be overdone. We can outline the usual journey to the venue, the mass of colourful crowds milling around the stages and the blistering heat of the scorching Australian summer, complimenting those in their BDO attire. With all of the following making continual appearances, Mexican hats, BDO coolers and an array of prominent band shirts, BDO 2010 marked the beginning of a new decade of international music in superbly fine form.

Kicking off the Australian BDO roller coaster, that will set up tents in near every capital city in the country and twice in Sydney this year, the leg begins with a line up of mammoth proportions at one of the only places that surf lifestyle, trip hop beats, ghetto tricks and divine diva’s meet our very own rock and roll sub culture.

Live Review: Sunset Sounds Day 2, January 7 2010

Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Sunset Sounds

With a dominant lineup from start to finish, the Riverstage was heavily populated from early on the second day of Sunset Sounds. Blessed with pleasingly mild weather again, the general affability of the crowd should be commended – as should the prevalence of shirts on male patrons (why is that so hard at other festivals?).

Having recently released what can only be described as a puzzling third album, Editors brought the air-strike riffs and towering vocals of their first two albums, interspersed with tracks from their strange Kulture Klub meets Ian Curtis new album to the Riverstage. Suffice to say their earlier material like ‘Munich’ and ‘Bullets’ moved the crowd and sounded fantastic through the big sound system. The less said about the few new tracks they brought the better.

36 degree heat blistered the red carpet as an entourage of stylish Limousines followed suit to the entrance of the red carpet. The fans eagerly awaited their stars, one hand grasping their digital cameras in anticipation, the other holding a makeshift fan and the odd shout of “Robbie or Keith” could be heard from a distance.

As the stars made their way up the red carpet, photographers, Television production crew and journalists fought their way to the front to capture the moment.
