Live Review – Big Day Out – Gold Coast 2013

Review by Lauren Sherritt
The Sunday set for the Gold Coast Big Day Out 2013 dawned hot and sunny as around the state thousands packed themselves into cars, shuttle buses and trains and headed to the Parklands.

There were those who arrived early, queuing eagerly at the gates with tickets in hands and starting the party with top-notch openers like the rocketing-towards-stardom Sydney two piece Toucan and the magnificent DJ Helena, who kick-started the burgeoning crowds’ energy.

Then there were those who waited out the sun to arrive later for the big names on the bill, with Grinspoon’s mid-afternoon efforts pulling the first really big crowd of the day. Hard Act to Follow and Thrills, Kills and Sunday Pills had the crowd singing as one and from a distance the moving sea of hands and bodies seemed to swell with excitement under the masterful conducting of the band’s front man Phil Jamieson.

BRITTLE Announce “THE OWLS” EP & National Tour July/Aug 2010

There’s nothing more that Melbourne alternative rockers BRITTLE want to do but to capture their dynamic live sound and energy in their recordings and that’s exactly what they’ve achieved with legendary producer Mark Opitz at the helm on the band’s new five-track EP titled “The Owls” which will be unleashed on June 14 as a free digital download.

The EP will be backed by a massive tour of the same name that will see the band visiting all capital cities in June, July and August as well as a host of major regional centres around the country. It will be their largest Australian tour since the release of their debut EP ‘Chinese Whispers’ in 2008.

Live Review: Sunset Sounds Day 2, January 7 2010

With a dominant lineup from start to finish, the Riverstage was heavily populated from early on the second day of Sunset Sounds. Blessed with pleasingly mild weather again, the general affability of the crowd should be commended – as should the prevalence of shirts on male patrons (why is that so hard at other festivals?).

Having recently released what can only be described as a puzzling third album, Editors brought the air-strike riffs and towering vocals of their first two albums, interspersed with tracks from their strange Kulture Klub meets Ian Curtis new album to the Riverstage. Suffice to say their earlier material like ‘Munich’ and ‘Bullets’ moved the crowd and sounded fantastic through the big sound system. The less said about the few new tracks they brought the better.

Live Review | Sounds of Spring Festival 2009

Sounds of Spring 2009

The Living End
Being a typical Sydney Festival goer, I was excited to finally attend a Brissy festival, and Sounds of Spring line up was amplifying my anticipation. With an extremely talented line up, featuring the likes of Calling all Cars, After the Fall, Dead Letter Circus, Mammal, Shihad, Frenzal Rhomb, Dave McCormack and the Polaroids, Little Birdy, Tim Rogers, Tex Perkins… the list goes on! What a cracker of a day, temperatures reaching 32 degrees, and a venue that boasted great stages, a beer tent on every corner and water around every bend. The ANA showgrounds in my mind proved to be the perfect festival venue.
