Mapletons launch Origami Army EP – The Troubadour, Brisbane 27th February 2010

Do you want a double pass to The Mapletons – Origami Army EP launch @ The Troubadour, Brisbane on on Saturday 27th February 2010? See below for details.

Mapletons   Wearing the radiant glow of a Brisbane buzz-band whose current four-piece incarnation has been in existence since only August 2009, Mapletons have done very well for themselves indeed, having already tumbled their twee blend of technicolour pop-folk around the country in support of Howling Bells and Whitley in this short time.

After cornering the market on sweetly melodic, harmony-rich sounds, Mapletons

will launch their debut six-track EP Origami Army to Brisbane audiences on Saturday February 27 at The Troubadour.

With support from the haunting brilliance of McKisko and the jangly alt-pop of Edward Guglielmino and The Show, the launch will be a spotlight on the brilliant creative talents currently bubbling through Brisbane’s veins.

Operator Please Announce Details Of Their Sophomore Album ‘Gloves’!

Everyone’s favourite Gold Coast collective, Operator Please, return with their remarkably sophisticated sophomore album ‘Gloves’ on Friday April 23.

The band spent 12 months pouring their heart and soul into a record that was largely self produced at a Byron Bay farm and in Amandah Wilkinson’s Gold Coast lounge room.

Lead singer Amandah says, “The album is the perfect representation for where we are at right now. It has all the experiences and growth from touring, seeing places and discovering the new; encompassed into about 35 minutes of songs.”
The band chose to upload the debut single ‘Logic’ to Myspace two weeks ahead of service: the reaction was incredible, with national radio stations adding the track immediately. Proving to be an instant hit, ‘Logic’ is released digitally on February 16.

News: The Medics ‘This Boat We Call Love’ East Coast Tour 2010

the medicsAfter quickly garnering the reputation as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from Queensland’s ever-growing pool of the freakishly talented, The Medics are proud to announce the release of their second EP This Boat We Call Love and will celebrate with a series of East Coast launch shows with Melbourne’s Blackchords.

Like many a promising band, the stage is where The Medics truly shine. With their well-earned stripes in place after winning support slots for the likes of Something With Numbers, The Panics, The Grates, Faker, Blue King Brown and Scribe, the group of tight-knit friends have not only gained acclaim in their hometown of Cairns, far north Queensland, but are also pricking ears and turning the heads of the nation with their epic live show. Brimming with emotive songwriting, stunning musicianship and intense live performances, it won’t be long before the music lovers of Australia will be clambering to see the spectacle for themselves.

Released through Brisbane label Starving Kids, This Boat We Call Love was produced by Mark Myers from The Middle East and features five performances that walk the spectrum of rock – from the delicate and ambient to the jagged and intense.

Joining The Medics on the bulk of shows for their East Coast tour will be Melbourne’s Blackchords. After releasing their debut self-titled album in 2009 to many a glowing review, the band are now back in the country after a string of successful dates in the UK and France in the later part of the year. Wasting no time in jumping back into the spotlight to show off their gentle, swooning brand of rock, they’ll be joining The Medics on their New South Wales and Victorian dates.

“The Medics sounded like early Radiohead… in the best possible way”

Interview with Damian Kulash of OK GO

Interview by: Elena Gomez
OK GOAt the tail-end of OK Go’s European tour, lead singer Damian Kulash braved a Danish snowstorm at 2am for a conversation with LifeMusicMedia about the colour blue, his love for Australian butter and the importance of body part insurance. Oh, and also why their latest album, Of the Colour of Blue, sounds so different from anything they’ve done before…

LifeMusicMedia (LMM): Hi Damian, so you’re in Denmark at the moment, right?
Damian Koulash (DK): We’re in Copenhagen, yeah.

Live Review: Porcupine Tree, Sleep Parade @ The Tivoli, 5 Feb 2010

By Denis Semchenko
Porcupine TreeAs Neil Young once sang, tonight’s the night – the big music has arrived in town. Along with fellow prog-rock fans, young and old, I walk to The Tivoli with a sense of excitement that only those who have a copy of Arriving Somewhere DVD can truly understand. Only two months ago, I was privy to witnessing Japan’s divine noise makers Mono, whose performance proved to be one of the most singularly powerful live experiences in my entire life, and just before that another crushing live unit –
Steven Wilson’s Swedish collaborators/protégés Opeth – yet this balmy evening also stores a whole array of spine-tingling moments for us.

The diverse crowd is still busy converging at the venue by the time newly-revamped Sleep Parade – who had earlier opened for tonight’s heroes during their inaugural Australian tour two ears ago – plug in and take all and sundry into a wide open sonic space. Oz-progsters to the core, the quartet unveil out one sprawling epic after another; Oxygen’s doomy arpeggio figure gives way to chunky riffing, while on the latest single Every Day and the propulsive drums-led Seconds Away the Melbournians very nearly better Karnivool at their own game. Frequently guitar-switching vocalist Leigh Davies is occasionally submerged in the dense instrumental mix, but nevertheless hits the requisite highs – in all, a strong performance in front of a healthy gathering that gives the band a warm Queensland welcome.

Live Review: The Kill Devil Hills, Mexico City and The Blackwater Fever @ The Zoo, Friday 5th February 2010

By: Lana Harris

The Kill Devil Hills   The hazy, swampy chamber that is The Zoo in summer is a perfect match for the mettle of the bands tonight – a mash of blues, rock, and country fermented in the practice rooms of Brisbane and Fremantle. It’s a largely desolate frontier that welcomes The Blackwater Fever to The Zoo tonight. The Brisbane duo move slowly at first, floating pared back and mellow bluesy tunes. The third track brings some rock to the room, and some bodies are now bravely leaving window seats to move into the space in front of the stage.

Blackwater Fever slide from sludgy depths to rock and roll heights with a fullness of sound that challenges your eye sight: is it really just the two of them up there, making all that noise? Andrew Walters is a laconic drummer, while vocalist and guitarist Shane Hicks sings, slides and on occasion growls his way across the set. They finish with ’Taking Its Toll’, which it seems like it does, the track finishing the set with slow, deep melodies.

ARIA Chart News – w/c 8th February 2010

Iyaz triumphs on ARIA Singles & Digital Track Charts as Susan Boyle’s dream run continues

Hailing from the British Virgin Islands, Iyaz swoops on the ARIA Singles Chart number one spot this week with the hit tune “Replay”, emulating his UK success and knocking Owl City‘s “Fireflies” from its five-week run at the top. The single also blasts to the top of the ARIA Digital Track Chart. Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed A Dream” meanwhile achieves its eleventh consecutive week at the peak of the ARIA Album Chart. It matches the 2001 chart-topping run of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, with the self-titled debut release from homegrown duo Savage Garden the most recent album to eclipse this tally, accruing twelve weeks straight at number one in 1997.
