The Boat People “Dear Darkly” – Album Review

Review: Victoria Nugent

Dear
Dear Darkly – The Boat People
It’s hard to decide where to start praising The Boat People’s new album, “Dear Darkly”. The well established Brisbane four-piece has produced an album fluent in the art of quirky pop, a nicely eclectic mix of songs.

The album kicks off with the extremely enjoyable “Under the Ocean” with plenty of “ooohs” and floaty-sounding vocals, coupled with some skilled guitar riffs. “Soporific” is one of the album’s most memorable songs with a great beat, tempo shifts and best of all, clever lyrics. I love the song’s use of intellectual sounding words to a catchy tune. “Boy you’re soporific, but is that your fault or mine? Things they used to be terrific, but now they’re barely anodyne.”

“Echo Stick Guitars” is an amazingly catchy track that starts out with synthesiser and almost robotic sounding high vocals which become loud and chanty for the chorus. The song switches tempo back and forth, showcasing a sound which can only be described as unique. Sure, the lyrics mightn’t always make sense (“Hey champions, hey violins, hey echo stick guitars”) but this shouty pop song had me singing along for the chorus.

“Antidote” is somewhat reminiscent of a Kisschasy love song with its subtle vocals and rolling drums. “Live in The Dark” has a somewhat bold psychedelic sound that’s as complex as it is likeable. “Too Much In My Mind” is an upbeat number with a catchy rhythm, some cutesy synth and fun lyrics about the downside of being too introspective. “Hidden Buses” takes a softer accoustic tone, complete with husky vocals.

Closing out the album, at six minutes long, “You Are Adored” is a musically diverse, romantic (albeit slightly long-winded) ditty that made my heart melt a little bit.

Dear Darkly” is a fantastic showcase of The Boat People’s scope for diverse, unconventional pop. From the sounds of this album, this band isn’t afraid from playing around with sounds and genres, and that is definitely a good thing.

Dan Parsons – “Firestarter” LP Review

Review: Lana Harris

DanDan Parsons
When writing about music, there’s a variety of words to use in order to avoid saying ‘song’ over and over again. For the most part, these words are interchangeable – the exact meaning matters little. Dan Parsons’ music took exception to this and the word ‘ditty’ just kept springing to mind. The exact meaning of ‘ditty’ is a short simple song, a poem intended to be sung, and this description fits his musical style like a ripped pair of skinny jeans fits indie pop.

The tracks on Firestarter are all short pop numbers, hanging around the three minute mark and taking inspiration from the catalogue of relationship

experiences that pop loves to work with. Parsons’uses a reflective, ruminative style to shape his words, which invoke images from the time of life found in the space after school, drifting past innocence but having not yet arrived anywhere else.

ARIA Chart News – w/c 12th April 2010

Having spent the last three weeks at number two, Lady Gaga’s album “The Fame Monster” takes over the top position on this week’s ARIA Album Chart. The album’s entire eighteen-week chart life has been spent in the top 10. On the ARIA Singles and Digital Track Charts, Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” holds firm for a fourth consecutive week, well on the way to becoming one of this year’s most successful chart toppers. It is the only single in the top 17 of this week’s singles chart that has a physical component.

“I Like That” from Richard Vission & Static Revenger featuring Luciana makes a bold move up the ARIA Singles Chart this week, jumping from 7 to 3 and edging ever closer to top spot. With a visit to our shores scheduled for later this month, Justin Bieber’s “Baby” featuring Ludacris moves up from 11 to 6, and “Nothin’ On You” from B.o.B. (featuring Bruno Mars) hits the top 10, moving up from 14 to 8. Also achieving their first top 10 single result is UK outfit Florence + The Machine, blasting up eight places to #9 this week with their hit single “You’ve Got The Love”. Another artist to visit on a promotional tour recently is US superstar Adam Lambert, who sees his single “Whataya Want From Me” grow week on week – this week he just misses out on an Aussie top 10 result as the single moves up five places to #11. Miley Cyrus also continues her upward trajectory, racing forward nine places to a top 20 result, landing at #19 this week with “When I Look At You”. Top 40 debuts this week are lead by Usher featuring Will.I.Am at #15 with “OMG”, followed by Lady Gaga at #28 with “Alejandro” and The Temper Trap at 32 with “Love Lost”

With an impressive catalog that hosts some of the most memorable pop punk songs of the past decade, their Epitaph Records debut ‘Not Without a Fight’, shows just how well they put their competition in a finishing headlock, “there’s no need to put up a fight, because New Found Glory takes the title by default.” – Absolute Punk
