From very early on in his career, Paul Kelly has been recognised as one of the most significant singer/songwriters in the country.

His influence over Australian music and Australian culture is wide and significant – backed up by the fact his new compilation Songs From The South – Volume 2 has gone Gold since its November 2008 release.

As well as issuing an enduring body of work with his own bands, Kelly has written film scores (Lantana and the Cannes 2006 highlight, Jindabyne), and produced albums for and written songs with some of Australia and New Zealand’s finest artists.

Paul Kelly’s Songs From The South Volume 2 was recently released, along with a DVD collection of Paul Kelly videos from 1985 to 2008 and a double CD including Songs From The South Volume’s 1 & 2. You can find these at record stores and digital outlets now.

Since it’s release the positive reviews have been coming through thick and fast.
One such review can be read below, from Noel Mengel of The Courier Mail. More reviews are posted in the ‘Recent Press’ section on Paul Kelly‘s website.

BRISCOE CREATES HISTORY AT THE NIKON INDY 300 – Gold Coast – October 2008

The final day of the Nikon Indy 300 on the streets of Surfers Paradise has concluded with the locals ‘FIRING UP’ to take the ultimate spoils today.

In the IndyCar Series, Australian Ryan Briscoe became the first driver from ‘Down Under’ to win on the Gold Coast in the Event’s 18 year history.

Originally from Sydney, Briscoe is also the first driver to win on the Gold Coast under the IndyCar Series category sanction, after the US open-wheel racing unification earlier this year.

Briscoe had the Brisbane-born Kiwi Scott Dixon in hot pursuit for the entire 60 lap race as he led the way from lap 17, before taking the chequered flag to be the 17th different winner of the Event.

While Briscoe was triumphant, his fellow Australian and fan favourite Will Power saw an early lead come to a cruel end after he led the opening 16 laps.

Power brushed the inside wall on the apex of Turn Five, breaking his steering and heading into the Turn 6 wall in what is the second part of the Bartercard Esses.

Power attempted to limp his mount back to the pits but was forced to park at Turn Eight, one day after making history by winning his third-consecutive pole position on the Gold Coast and becoming the first three-time polesitter for the Nikon Indy 300.

While Power met an unfortunate end, the polesitter in the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series was untouchable – with the Gold Coast’s Jamie Whincup following up his pole and race one victory with two race wins today.

The results saw Whincup undeniably clinch his tenth career round win and further establish his championship lead over fellow Ford driver Mark Winterbottom and Holden driver Garth Tander.

While Whincup relinquished the lead for a short period early in the first of today’s two races, the majority of the weekend saw him well and truly in the leading position where, despite a continuously challenging Tander.

When it came to round wins in the Carrera Cup, the only support category to race today, it was James Moffat who stood on the top step, with David Wall second and the season champion Craig Baird – the Gold Coaster secured the championship before this weekend’s final round – in third.

Gabriella Cilmi and The Presets sweep the 2008 ARIA Awards

The winners of the 2008 ARIA Awards, proudly presented by Motorola, have been announced and pop and electronic dance music have ruled the day in the form of multiple winners GABRIELLA CILMI and THE PRESETS. They join an eclectic group of ARIA Award recipients who include THE LIVING END, KASEY CHAMBERS and SHANE NICHOLSON, NICK CAVE and GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, THE PANICS and BLISS N’ ESO, among others.

In what is an extraordinary success story, vocal powerhouse GABRIELLA CILMI, a pop singer who had yet to emerge on the Australian music landscape this time last year, has taken out an incredible 6 ARIA Awards on the back of her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, and her breakthrough smash hit single, Sweet About Me. The Melbourne-born, London-based Cilmi has received ARIA Awards in the categories of BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE (Sweet About Me), BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Lessons to be Learned), BEST POP RELEASE (Lessons to be Learned), HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE (Sweet About Me) and the coveted ARIA Award for SINGLE OF THE YEAR for Sweet About Me. With the world at her feet, GABRIELLA CILMI’s ARIA Awards triumph is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement for the Dandenong girl who has just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Electronic duo THE PRESETS has also had a cracking year with the release of their widely acclaimed second album Apocalypso. They fought off stiff competition in the prestigious categories of ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST GROUP to take out both for the hugely popular Apocalypso. The album has also seen THE PRESETS receive the pointy trophy in the category of BEST DANCE RELEASE taking their tally to 3 ARIA Awards (plus 2 ARIA Artisan Awards, including Producer of the Year for Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). The self-produced Apocalypso, which spawned the gritty hit single My People, has sealed THE PRESETS as Australia’s premiere electronic act.

Augie March – Watch Me Disappear – Album Release

Available from Augie March - Watch Me Disappear

There’s little about Augie March that could be called everyday. With singer Glenn Richards’ distinctive voice, his sharp, literary lyrics and the band’s off-kilter rock ‘n’ roll, the Melbourne band has created a niche for itself in the past 12 years, one that has brought multiple awards, taken it around the world and attracted an ever-increasing and loyal fan-base in Australia and beyond.

The world Richards has created for Augie March’s fourth album, Watch Me Disappear, is certainly not everyday. Barbarians have breached its walls and are wallowing in the chaos. Muggers mug, killers kill, dragons with bulldog heads inhabit the pubs and a wealth of richly-drawn characters trade punches, kisses and everything in between. It’s a place of extraordinary beauty too, a beauty that offers escape from the evil, from the anarchy — from the everyday.

The John Steel Singers embark on Australian headline tour – November 2008

John Steel Singers
The John Steel Singers have an aversion to sleeping in their own beds. They like the road. The rough, smelly, road. At least it seems that way. While in the midst of a huge national tour opening up for The Grates throughout October, The John Steel Singers have announced their own national headline tour in November.

In support of their upcoming EP “The John Steel Singers: In Colour” out on November 1st through Levity®/Inertia, the Brisjanglians will be hitting the road again from November 7th up and down the East Coast of Australia.

Skipping Girl Vinegar – Debut Album “Sift The Noise”

In Stores now through Popboomerang / Secret Fox / MGM

Sometimes an album comes along that resonates. Something that sounds immediately relevant and is so unmistakably honest, that no matter your musical taste, there’s a deep founded respect and due reverence noted. Drum Media called it “a classic pop sense that doesn’t get bogged in its own vision of itself” (Aug 08). Rip It Up Magazine were straight to the point: “In an age of downloads and ringtones, Skipping Girl Vinegar stand out from the pack”.

Skipping Girl Vinegar are proud to announce the release of their debut album Sift The Noise. An alt acoustic saturation of melody and pop hook described by the band as ‘music from cold places’, Sift The Noise was recorded in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and studios across Melbourne – as well as ‘The Lookout’, a beach shack in Aireys Inlet. The album was mixed and mastered in London, New York and Nashville by Adrian Bushby (Ben Kweller, Gomez, Foo Fighters), Greg Calibi (Bob Dylan, John Lennon, David Bowie) and Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Bob Evans) respectively.

“Genius isn’t it?” YKB’s lead guitarist Charles Sales tells Harro a few days before their Immaculate Confection Tour, October 2008

Yves Klein Blue Yves Klein Blue - Brisbane Ekka 2008 Yves Klein Blue - Brisbane Ekka 2008 Yves Klein Blue - Brisbane Ekka 2008

Harro: Yves Klein Blue are named after artist Yves Klein’s famous IKB, a blue paint that does not lose its brilliance over time, which is a metaphor for your bands aspiration to create music that will never weaken with age. Whose idea was it to pick Yves Kleins masterpiece as the name of the band?

Charles: Michaels. I blame it all on him. I must admit, the analysis for the bandname has come up in hindsight, but it still seems like a good idea.

Harro: How does it feel to be touring with The Holidays whom are one of the bands that you look up to the most?

Charles: It will certainly be an interesting tour. I mean we’re going to Perth and Adelaide! We’ve never been there before, though I think the Holidays have. They’re hardened road warriors.

Harro: Who came up with the interesting name of the tour Immaculate Confection? Continue reading “Genius isn’t it?” YKB’s lead guitarist Charles Sales tells Harro a few days before their Immaculate Confection Tour, October 2008
