Live Review: The Fumes @ The Zoo, Brisbane 12 December 2009 w/ Marshall and the Fro

Author: Hannah Collins
It’s Saturday night at The Zoo, time to kick back, get your hat on, and knuckle down for the rockabilly blues ensemble that is The Fumes.

Venue not even at half capacity, making stage front space an easy grab, 3 piece Marshall and the Fro introduce us to a very fun filled evening. With influences like Dallas Frasca, Blue King Brown and Tool, the bluesy rock set saw everybody’s feet sliding backwards and forward’s in time with the drums. Bass player Tracy Stephens looked great in a little red and white pokerdot dress, her bass pumping blues down the spines of eager onlookers. Their unique light rock, beefy but slow with it’s rockabilly undertone seemed to really intrigue.

Live Review: Mono, laura, Del Toro @ The Hi-Fi, Brisbane 6 December 2009

Mono
Concluding my adventures in Hi-Fi (Brisbane) (to paraphrase an R.E.M. album title) for the week – Sia on Thursday, Jarvis Cocker on Saturday – is a Sunday night event with a bill that looks like post-rock lover’s wet dream: Japanese celestial noise giants Mono, sublime Melbournians laura and Brisbane’s own math soundscapists Del Toro. In contrast with the packed earlier shows, there’s room to move and the alcohol-fuelled rowdiness, frequent at “name” gigs, is absent: everyone’s here to listen to MUSIC.

BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT AUSTRALIAN TOUR w/ special guest RIO EN MEDIO (USA) – January 2010

Brightblack morning light   Mistletone is proud to present for the first time in Australia, the slow and hazy psychedelic jams of New Mexico’s Brightblack Morning Light. Their dreamy, blissed out desert tones will be the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer.

The band was founded by the gentle naturalist ND Shineywater, hailing from Alabama, birthplace of icons such as Sun Ra & Diana Ross. Shineywater since has moved to live a minimal life off the coal/nuclear grid in New Mexico, by using only four solar panels in his small adobe dwelling.

For this tour Brightblack Morning Light will consist of Shineywater with two accompanists: Danielle Stech-Homsy (keyboards/vocals) who has released two fine solo albums under the name Rio en Medio, and Cannupa Luger, a Native American artist and percussionist who lives in the mountains nearby Shineywater’s home.

Live Review | Hungry Kids of Hungary @ The Zoo, Brisbane with Deep Sea Arcade and Ball Park Music – 14 November 2009

Photo and Words: Elize Strydom

Hungry Kids Of HungaryThe Zoo is filled with fresh faced lasses in floral dresses and boys with floppy hair and dance pants. As soon as the six members of Brisbane’s Ball Park Music hit the stage to room is on its feet and inching closer to the stage. It’s like were being sucked forward by the gloriously poppy sounds and irresistibly jangly guitars. And the trombone. How can anyone resist a trombone? This collective of shiny, happy young’uns have spent much of the year gigging around the city and attracting a little pack of supporters. They released an 8 track debut “Rolling on the floor, Laughing ourselves to sleep” early this year and some of the tracks have come to the attention of triple j heavyweights.

Hungry Kids of Hungary – “Let You Down Easy” National Tour – November 2009

Hungry Kids of Hungary   The frequent flyer miles have been piling up for the Hungry Kids of Hungary in 2009 as they zigzagged around the country on the heels of Bertie Blackman and Little Birdy as well as firming up friendships with the likes of Oh Mercy, Tom Ugly and Philadelphia Grand Jury and Washington on the massive triple j presented International Relations Tour. And that’s not to mention a slew of interstate appearances and festival slots at the likes of Big Day Out, Sounds of Spring, Blueprint Festival and Valley Fiesta.

Now it’s time for the Brisbane-four to stand on their own eight feet, fuel up the Tarago yet again and hit the road on their own merits for The Let You Down Easy National Tour, their first ever headline jaunt.

Live Review: UK Subs @ The Zoo, Brisbane 7 October 2009

Review By Jose Eduardo Cruz

UKSubsThis rather cold Wednesday night presented itself as an interesting proposition from the start. It would have been safe to assume that if you had decided to set up a hair spray stall just outside the venue you would have made a handsome profit. Or perhaps spiked bracelets and belts may have also pocketed you enough for a six pack of beer.

This is a nostalgic night for many of the punters present tonight trying to relive past experiences from faraway places and long gone times. I had the pleasure of speaking to two such fans that could not contain their enthusiasm over what this meant to them. One had seen UK Subs 30 years ago before he migrated to Australia. The other saw them 15 years ago and duly noted the aging process that had taken a hold of Charlie Harper. Such is the life of a legendary trend setter.

News: Patrick Wolf (UK) ‘The Bachelor’ Australian Tour – December 2009

The infamous Patrick Wolf returns to our shores, to celebrate the release of his latest album, The Bachelor.

Visceral, Impulsive, Antagonistic and Unique; the list of superlatives and adjectives for this young man and his music go on ad infinitum. Never one to conform to artistic nor industry status quo, young Master Wolf could rightly claim pole position at the vanguard of avant-garde pop. His wonderfully wilful compositions and forays into the glamorous aesthetic of leather, chains, glitter and feathers only exalt the kind of compelling self- awareness we find so irresistible.

Live Review: Lisa Mitchell, Oh Mercy, White Birds & Lemons @ The Zoo, Brisbane 28 August 2009

Lisa Mitchell, Oh Mercy and White Birds & Lemons played to a Sold Out Show at the Zoo on Friday 28th August 2009 in the 1st Night of the tour to promote Lisa Mitchell’s 2nd album Wonder which debuted on July 31, 2009.

4 piece band White Birds & Lemons originally from Devonport on the North Shore of Auckland, but now living in Melbourne totally wowed the fans at the Zoo on Friday night. Using an electronic drumset which you don’t see much of with live bands, they had the crowd swaying and nodding to their techno-pop rock songs. Playing songs from their first album “Who Says You’re Free?” and more, they left the punters on a high. After listening to their song “Gambler” on their website, White Birds & Lemons are even better live. Can’t wait for a new album to arrive. White Birds & Lemons were a good selection for the 1st band on a great night of entertainment.

The Lucksmiths (Farewell Show) w/ Darren Hanlon @ The Zoo, Brisbane 23 August 2009

The Lucksmiths   Underground pop battlers The Lucksmiths are serving notice. Yes, sadly, it’s true. Times change, people move on, and like many of their songs — redolent with ordinary minutiae — The Lucksmiths have finally been conquered by everyday life.

Formed in 1993, and having since transcended musical fashions and movements, the Melbourne band have long been seen as refreshingly unique amongst the musical landscape; their live shows, often hilariously haphazard, continue to captivate audiences at home and around the world, while they remain fond favourites of many who came across the band in their formative years.
