Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion – Exhibition @ The Ian Potter Centre, Melbourne

  Drawing from the NGV ’s Collection of Australian Fashion and Textiles, Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion will look at the rise fashion in Australia from the 1850s to 1950s. The exhibition will include some rare early examples of labelled garments from the mid 19th century and a range of dresses, tailored items and accessories that were made and retailed in Australia during this period.

Fashion has played a vital role in Australia since first European settlement. Whether reflecting status and position in a newly formed society, or exhibiting new found wealth and flamboyance, the language of fashion was of the utmost importance for the burgeoning Australian society.

Since the mid 1990s, Stephen has been a fixture at literally hundreds of live shows, capturing the excitement and energy through his lens. All up, he’s taken more than 30,000 images and, throughout March 2010, his favourite 50 will be on display at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of a unique exhibition simply called “Rock and Roll”. There’s no doubting that over the past few decades Brisbane has grown into a true music town. And few people have been there to see the city’s evolution quite like acclaimed music photographer Stephen Booth. Since the mid 1990s, Stephen has been a fixture at literally hundreds of live shows, capturing the excitement and energy through his lens. All up, he’s taken more than 30,000 images and, throughout March 2010, his favourite 50 will be on display at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of a unique exhibition simply called “Rock and Roll”. The photos featured in this very special show range from intimate gigs in long lost venues, through to huge stadium extravaganzas – from a punk show in a car park to U2 in an enormodome. “Rock and Roll” will rekindle those musical memories we all have. I didn’t want to. I lived alone. I am single. 66a Church Road was the longest relationship of my life. This is a break up show. For my flat.” Daniel Kitson, May 2008. Astonishing images of crumbling beauty and battered grandeur will emerge from time beaten suitcases, telling a funny, sad and truly nostalgic story of a forsaken flat, a broken heart and the ache for home.

Green Room Award winner Jacob Diefenbach joins an all-star Brisbane cast in Homoneurotic, which will “thoroughly entertain” audiences, says producer Chris Maver (The Fruit Tingle Cabaret, In The Pink).

“Homoneurotic is a great night out at the theatre; it’s entertaining, thought-provoking, subversive and full of comedy, controversy, colour, glitter and glamour,” Chris said.

SPLENDID! Call for young and emerging artists for new national arts project.

In collaboration with the Australia Council for the Arts and Lismore Regional Gallery, Splendour in the Grass is proud to announce the launch of SPLENDID – a mammoth arts initiative to workshop and showcase young and emerging Australian artists.

Ten young and emerging artists who work across the visual arts, theatre, dance, design, installation, architecture, digital art, text, sound and other creative areas will be chosen to undertake a three-week Arts Lab residency in Lismore in July 2009.

Connect 4: PLAY @ The Valley Studios – 28 March 2009

The Valley Studios will be transformed into a kaleidoscopic extravaganza of music and interactive art Connect 4: PLAY. 4C Arts Collective has joined forces with a collection of Brisbane’s best emerging musicians, visual and performance artists to bring fun and mayhem.

Aural delights will be provided by some great emerging bands. Dot.ay’s highly experimental and creatively satisfying tunes will keep the dance floor buzzing, followed by Hunz, who combines visual art and music together in his unique live shows; Music will be seen; Art will be heard. Combine this with the raw rocking talent, high energy and tremendous tunes of Little Vegas and the Fuzz Parade and 4C has an undeniably stellar line-up.

All proceeds from Connect 4: PLAY will be donated to Backbone Youth Arts, one of Queensland’s leading Youth Theatre companies. Backbone Youth Arts supports, encourages and grows youth arts in Brisbane and is well known for its annual 2high Festival which provides unique and invaluable experience for festival and event management for young people with a passion for theatre, music and visual arts.
