Boiling Point @ Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane 19 November 2010 [Live Review]

The show begins before we’ve even entered the room. An usher approaches, explaining that to gain admission, tickets are not enough. We’ll need to remove our shoes and any socks and crowd into the shopfront’s store room, leaving behind our footwear. As compensation we will be given a small torch. Crammed into the dark room with forty other people and their exposed feet, we wait for the show to begin.

There is no extra light provided once the doors to the shopfront are opened. We creep in using our bare feet for balance and our small torches for sight. Bolder venturers have already spotted the still as statue performers; others illuminate kitchenware hanging from the ceiling and news stories on the wall recounting the trial of a 1950’s female that killed her husband by poisoning him.

MADDESTMAXIMVS: PLANET AND STARS SEQUENCE @ Judith Wright Centre June-July 2010

Artist Shaun Gladwell presents his work, MADDESTMAXIMVS: Planet & Stars Sequence (created as Australia’s contribution to the 2009 Venice Biennale), for two weeks only at the Institute of Modern Art. Influenced by his experiences in Australia’s landscape of the outback, his interest in extreme sports, and Mad Max movies, the work is a suite of videos accompanied by sound, photographic and sculptural works. Roadkill kangaroos are found on the side of highways by a black leather clad motorcyclist and given a ritualistic burial, a figure surfs a vehicle as it moves through desert roads, a masked individual rapidly paints and subsequently erases images of the universe in open arid settings, and a group of figures spin against natural rock formations. SCOTT REDFORD VS. MICHAEL ZAVROS @ Judith Wright Centre June-July 2010

Seemingly infuriated by the old avant-garde presumption that artworks should criticise and challenge their publics, the art world is currently enjoying a post-critical turn. Pop Life, a show which recently debuted at London’s Tate Modern, celebrates artists who aim to please and entertain, who embrace commercialism and populism, and want their audiences to like them. They include Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Damian Hirst, and Takashi Murakami. Scott Redford vs. Michael Zavros brings this idea home, pitting two local post-critical artists – both born and bred on the Gold Coast – against one another. Scott Redford is a former Queer artist who turned his back on social critique to assert the superior aesthetic of Surfers Paradise. Michael Zavros is a photo-realist painter famed for painting beautiful things beautifully: good shoes, bespoke suits, mansions, baroque interiors, pretty boys, and perfume bottles. WARREN MILLER’S DYNASTY @ Judith Wright Centre 24-26 June 2010

  Warren Miller’s 60th annual film Dynasty reveals the past, present, and future of winter sport. It is a film that gathers the generations under one filmic roof, from the Crist Family Patriarch to Glen Plake to Daron Rahlves, and the youth explosion of terrain park talent they’ve inspired. It’s like a family reunion, held in neck-deep snow, with mandatory air required for entry. Once again hosted by Jonny Moseley, this year’s film finds epic snowfall, insane big mountain lines, and huge air in places like Washington’s Crystal Mountain, Lake Tahoe’s Sierra Nevada mountains, and all across Colorado. It leaves no snowball unturned in celebrating everyone who has, does, and will forever be a part of Warren Miller’s Dynasty.

Lincoln and Austin Field of Vision (Visual Arts)


Lincoln Austin Field of Vision Lincoln Austin’s abstract sculptures meld the interests of minimalism and op art to explore the ways regular, repeated forms can generate optical illusions and effects.

The Ipswich-based artist is known for his small, intricate works, but this will change with the imminent opening of Brisbane’s new building, Northbridge, which features his massive wall relief, Once Again.

HOMONEUROTIC CABARET

The comedy, colour, glitz and glamour of Queensland’s gay community and its stories will be celebrated in the world premiere of Homoneurotic Cabaret at Judith Wright Centre on Friday 5 June 2009.

Green Room Award winner Jacob Diefenbach joins an all-star Brisbane cast in Homoneurotic, which will “thoroughly entertain” audiences, says producer Chris Maver (The Fruit Tingle Cabaret, In The Pink).

“Homoneurotic is a great night out at the theatre; it’s entertaining, thought-provoking, subversive and full of comedy, controversy, colour, glitter and glamour,” Chris said.
