CHARLIE MAYFAIR – SUNSET SOUNDS FOSTER BAND

Watch My Hands - Charlie MayfairCharlie Mayfair
In January 2010, a band was born: with fire in their bellies and rapture in their hearts, they took to stages sharing stories woven into songs. This band is Charlie Mayfair.

The early months of the year saw the band racing around their hometown writing songs, making friends, and letting people experience their unique style of folk-fired pop. They hollered their gigs from the rooftops and Brisbane heeded their call.

And so their three-part-harmonised hollering led them to play at many lovely venues like The Powerhouse, The Troubadour, The Zoo, The Sound Lounge, World Bar and The Old Museum sharing the stage with the talented likes of Old Man River, Dan Parsons, Skipping Girl Vinegar, The Bedroom Philosopher, The Boat People, Loren, TheCoronas (IRE) and Iceland’s Svavar Knutur, amongst others.

Wasting no time jumping into the studio, a short six months from inception, their debut release Watch My Hands “is a five-track harmony wonderland” (Scene Magazine) imbued with a bohemian flair while striding effortlessly between elements of folk and pop. Launched at The Zoo in Brisbane to an impressive capacity crowd, the release has since received enthusiastic nods from across the nation with a feature on triple j Unearthed, spot plays on the station, and a growing collection of glowing commentary on the bands’ live shows and debut recording.

Having made a quick trek to Sydney to launch the release to a welcoming reception at the Finders Keepers markets and MUM, the remaining months of 2010 will see the group once again hit the road for their first east coast tour which follows the release of their debut video clip for ‘If I Fell Down’. The shows will feature new songs and showcase the newly expanded bands’ impassioned live show.

Tool announce Big Day Out sideshows in Brisbane and Melbourne!

Lees & West proudly present TOOL

Touring Down Under for the first time in four years, vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey and bassist Justin Chancellor take a break from the studio where they have been working on a follow-up to 2006’s 10,000 Days to share their “primal, poignant, poetic and as always utterly powerful” (ARTISTdirect, July 2010) music with Aussie music fans.

Formed in Los Angeles at the dawn of the ’90s, TOOL first caused tremors in 1993, with their debut album Undertow going platinum, winning praise for its dynamic take on metal and causing controversy with striking videos .for Sober and Prison Sex. Ænima followed in 1996 and Lateralus in 2001, both winning Grammys, taking the band further down a mind-bending rabbit-hole of artful and progressive alternative rock and inspiring an unwavering devotion in their ever-swelling audience.

SPECTACULAR RACING TOPS OFF STELLAR GOLD COAST WEEKEND

A crowd of 58,977 spectators has enjoyed a hot day and hot racing on the streets of the Gold Coast today for the third and final day of the Armor All Gold Coast 600.

Today’s crowd brings the Event’s total tally to 170,073 fans across the three days, a result Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said was spectacular.

“This Event means jobs, it means tourism, this is too important for the Gold Coast, and with 170,000 odd spectators over three days, that is great for the Gold Coast,” said Minister Reeves.

“The aerial shots from today’s action that are being shown around the world show what the Gold Coast has to offer, and you couldn’t pay for that kind of advertising and the benefits will be ongoing – what a fantastic result.”

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser echoed the Minister for Sport’s statements.

“There isn’t a spectator that was here today that will go home disappointed, or anyone that would have watched that on television and not hung on right to the last lap, that was competitive racing with the best backdrop in Surfers Paradise and it’s a wonderful thing,” said Fraser.

“No doubt the event has met the mark this year, we will make a formal assessment next year but right now it is firmly in pole position.”

Entertaining the spectators today was the second 300 kilometer, 120 lap battle for V8 Supercar glory on the streets, with reigning Champion Jamie Whincup and co-driver Steve Owen taking the honours after a hard-fought race which culminated in a furious battle for the lead between Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen across the final segment.

Van Gisbergen eventually crossed the line in second, seeing he and co-driver John McIntyre on the second step of the podium while Mark Winterbottom had a determined drive through the field after a mishap during his pit stop, to see he and his co-driver Luke Youlden claim third today.

“That is certainly up there as far as wins, we were a sitting duck there at the end but the car was a long way from yesterday, we reinvited the wheel which is not uncommon in motrsport, a tune up here or a tweak there, a spring change and so on, massive amount of changes last night, and the car was a lot better today,” said Whincup.

“We still used the rear tyres, but it was a fun battle with Shane, we raced hard but fair. That is what it is all about!”

Van Gisbergen was also happy with the battle to the finish although he wasn’t able to stand on the top step.

“It was definitely on at the end there and we were trying pretty hard, Jamie was driving really well, it was a great fight and I am pretty happy with the result, I would have been happy with third but second is better!” said van Gisbergen.

Priaulx was the highest placed international driver, placing tenth with his driving partner Lowndes in the TeamVodafone machine after they placed second in yesterday’s race, receiving a special trophy for his efforts.

Priaulx wasn’t alone in enjoying the weekend’s action, with Castroneves just one of the drivers expressing excitement at the prospect of coming back.

“Yes! It’s like Dancing With The Stars – so much fun. I gotta do it,” said Castroneves when asked if he would come back next year if he could.

The V8 Supercars weren’t the only cars thrilling the crowd today, with a special trip down memory lane arranged for the fans this morning when the infamous 1977 1-2 Bathurst finish of Alan Moffat and Colin Bond was recreated before their eyes.

During their session this morning, the cars did laps for the crowd before the entire field slowed to walking pace, apart from the cars of Moffat and Bond, who continued on at ‘race pace’ to recreate the form finish across the start/finish line.

However it wasn’t exactly as before, with the pair changing it up to see Bond cross the line first.

“This is a fantastic event to be a part of. It was terrific to recreate probably the most memorable moment in my motor racing career,” said Moffat

“It was great to spend time with the drivers from my era.

“The Bathurst Regional City Council and the National Motor Racing Museum must be congratulated for giving up the car for this weekend.

“The last time we went around it was 1-2, this time around it was 2-1, so I guess the score is even between Colin and myself. Who knows…we might have to get together for the decider.”

Also on track today were the Yokahama V8 Utes, the Hertz MINI Challenge pocket rockets and the Genuine Ford Parts Australia Formula Ford Championship.

Taking race wins in the Utes today were Rhys Mc Nally for race two and Grant Johnson for race three, with Chris Pither taking the round honours.

In the MINI Challenge and Formula Ford racing it was Glenn Seton and Chaz Mostert respectively who took the race three spoils, with Paul Stokell and Mostert winning the rounds respectively. Mostert dominated his category with three wins from three races allowing him to extend his championship lead significantly.

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 has taken place across three days October 22-24, and is a partnership between the Queensland Government and V8 Supercars Australia. For more information on the event, please visit www.goldcoast600.com.au

BRING ME THE HORIZON DEBUTS AT #1 ON ARIA CHARTS

ThereBring Me the Horizon
In an industry where times are tough and naysayers are plentiful, Shock Records has recently seen stalwart acts, defiant of trends and gimmicks rise to the forefront. Just three months ago Byron Bay band Parkway Drive stormed the ARIA charts to arrive at a number two debut. To many it was an unexpected ambush but at Shock we have no reservations about the power of the punk/hardcore releases that we have become so well known for.

Dreaming Up The Vision: Interview with Leah Purcell, 11th October 2010 – LifeMusicMedia Interviews

Dreaming Up The Vision

Actor/Director Leah Purcell talks to Life Music Media about character, coming home, and the joy of performing in The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table.

In 2008 actress Leah Purcell was honoured with Australian theatre’s highest recognition the Helpmann Award (Australia’s version of the Tony Award) for her role in Wesley Enoch’s The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table. Produced in Sydney as a Hothouse Theatre/Griffin Theatre Company production and directed by Marion Potts, the play was critically acclaimed, making its mark as an important piece of contemporary Australian theatre. Now a new production, presented by QPAC and staged by Purcell’s Bungabura Productions, brings this quintessentially Queensland story home.

While deep into the plays rehearsal period, the actress, who is also directing this version, took time to answer some questions for Pepa Wolfe.

What is the play about?
Well there’re two story lines. There’s the history of the table – it was my Great-great Grandmother’s birth tree. When settlement happened on this island they cut down that birth tree and turned it into a table. As a little girl she followed the table and got a job as a cook in the house where the table ended up. And throughout the lifetimes the table has been passed down…

…To the present day story about my character Annie and her estranged son Nathan. They’ve been estranged for 25 years. She had him when she was 13 and she left because of the talk around the incident where she fell pregnant, and the lies around that. [Annie’s] mother Faith passes away, which brings Nathan and Annie back together. The surface story is to argue and discuss who gets the table, but though that discussion we learn more about each individual character.

RED INK – ‘CATCHING A KILLER’ EP LAUNCH!

RED INK – ‘Catching A Killer’ EP Launch Double Pass Giveaway: See below for details.

RED INK are not your average band, they are not here for a quick rise to the top, to jump on a style trend or to ride a wave of hype. These guys are musicians, good ones. And over the last four years they have proved that they are here to do the hard yards. Their hundreds of gigs across the country and thousands of hours crafting their sound have paid off in the form of a strong underground following across Australia and sinking its claws in across the world.

The groups latest killer track is 3 minutes of violence, pop and adrenaline, with a chorus that will jam through your mind for days. The slurred audacity of John Jakubenko’s vocals takes your mind straight back to your craziest house party and that teetering feeling that things could get out of control – but no matter what, you’re gonna have a blast.

The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table @ QPAC, Brisbane 14-30 October 2010

A powerful play about family and culture and the ways in which storytelling binds people together” – The Australian

Purcell delivers a startlingly powerful performance” – Daily Telegraph

Award-winning Queensland actor and director Leah Purcell (Box the Pony, King Lear, Black Chicks Talking) will direct and star in Bungabura Production’s new presentation of Wesley Enoch’s powerful drama The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table at Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) Cremorne Theatre from 14 – 30 October 2010.

This powerful family saga spans four generations and is a moving testament to culture lived, lost and found and the strength of a family adapting and gathering together.

First produced by Griffin and Hothouse Theatre Company, this new production of The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table offers a compelling theatre experience that encapsulates themes of ownership, heritage, culture and sexuality.

QPAC Chief Executive John Kotzas said that QPAC is very pleased to be presenting this work because of its cultural significance for Queensland and the Centre’s longstanding relationship with Bungabura Productions.

The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table is an immensely important piece of theatre –a story about families that transcends cultures,” said Kotzas.

In the 1870s a girl is born under a tree, which is cut down to become a kitchen table. Generations later, a young man and his mother fight for ownership of the table.

Winner of Patrick White Playwrights Award 2005 and short listed for both the New South Wales and Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table was written by renowned Queensland-born director and playwright, Wesley Enoch, who was recently appointed as the new Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company.

Wesley Enoch said the Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table has a mix between a strong naturalistic narrative of connection and a long imaginative storytelling about family and heritage. I was trying to write a piece about the emotional power of stories to bind a family together through hardship and adversity. Leah Purcell is one of the country’s best actors and she has created a character in a way that goes beyond what I could imagine as a writer,” said Enoch.

Director and lead actor Leah Purcell, whose portrayal of Annie has been described by reviewers as startlingly powerful, received a Helpmann Award for Best Actress in a Play in 2008.

“I am very proud of winning a Helpmann Award because I worked extremely hard to bring Annie to life, but being conscious of not making her character a cliché.

“This play is a universal story for all. It’s gutsy, it packs a punch or two, it’s laugh-out loud funny and takes you on an emotional journey as Annie and Nathan re-connect from being estranged for many years,” said Purcell.

“The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table is a great yarn and a theatre experience worth seeing, whether you are a regular to the Arts or if you are experiencing theatre for the first time, this is something worth seeing,” she said.
