Kora @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 27 January 2011 [Photos & Review]

Photos and Words by Jose Eduardo Cruz

What an amazing gig from this New Zealand band consisting of four brothers. Certain people are blessed with different talents and islander people are blessed with beautiful voices and musical skills. The punters were largely expat Kiwis who were eager to let anyone who would listen know that these guys were it.

There were constant instrument changes amongst the members of the band and various vocal leads. Overall, an amazing gig which should place them on better ground for their next Australian tour.

Show cancelled due to Brisbane Floods!

See below for details

The sumptuous second taste of Dead Letter Chorus’ upcoming album, Run, Wild has become (if you excuse the pun) a runaway success. The song’s existential yet hopeful sentiments have clearly tapped into the zeitgeist and in to the hearts of the general public thanks to a lot of love from national broadcaster Triple J as well as a slew of community radio.

Run, Wild was decidedly a highlight of the band’s live set on their recent East Coast tour alongside the considerable talents of Seagull and Dan Parsons. And it wasn’t just in live land that the track was heaped with kudos; its accompanying film clip was recently named Indie Clip of the Week by national institution, and savior of late night television watchers everywhere, Rage.

Bonding over a shared love of NZ music and passion for making their own, Six60 formed after meeting at a Kora concert in 2006. Three members flatted together as Otago Uni students, spending countless hours in their recording studio (Eli’s room) at number 660 on notorious Castle St.

Built To Spill @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 02 January 2011 [Tour News]

Having made their Australian debut on 2008’s Falls & Southbound Festivals, Built To Spill return this summer for another round of festival activity, this time as special guests of both the Peats Ridge and Pyramid Rock Festivals.

Over time, Built to Spill have developed an especially dedicated following – among them Matt Groening, who curated the May 2010 edition of the UK based All Tomorrow’s

Parties festival. Groening invited Built To Spill to play alongside heavyweights: the reformed Iggy & The Stooges, Spiritualized, She & Him, Joanna Newsom, Deerhunter & others. Continue reading Built To Spill @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 02 January 2011 [Tour News]

The New Pornographers – “Together” Australian Tour November 2010 [Tour News]

In celebration of their fifth album, “Together”, Canadian-US super-collective The New Pornographers are primed to make their return to Australia this November. As perfect a pop outfit as you’re ever likely to find, The New Pornographers have always dreamed of finding a middle ground between Led Zeppelin and The 5th Dimension, which as it turns out is actually quite a good way of describing their mix of deceptively complex songwriting combined with glimmering hooks and arena-like power.

And as Australian punters are more than aware the bright yet often bittersweet nature of what they do, including all those wonderful vocal harmonies, is an even better experience in the live setting.

PVT (Pivot), Seekae, AXXONN @ The Zoo, Brisbane 19 August 2010 – Live Review

Review: Denis Semchenko
As is the rule with The Zoo on school nights, there’s only a handful of people inside the room by the time AXXONN – aka Brisbane electronic music artist Tom Hall – announces his appearance by producing a series of bleeps from his keyboard and laptop. Not deterred by lacking crowd numbers, he quickly fills the sonic space with heady drone-electro, hitting one cutting, heavily-sustained synth chord after another. As the kick drum gets more insistent and bassy, the lucky few listeners in the room begin to “get into it”, rewarding each track with progressively louder applause. Hall’s one-man show may not involve much antics to ensure an enthralling viewing experience, but the music itself makes for an excellent listen.

Hungry Kids of Hungary, The Holidays, The Artisan Guns @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 6 August 2010 – Live Review

Review: Victoria Nugent

Friday night at the Zoo, the crowd is still pretty thin as New Zealand four-piece The Artisan Guns take to the stage. Between bantering about having been awake for nearly a whole day, thanks to flights and time differences, the band shows off their ability for mellow melodies and beautiful harmonies. Soft vocals are teamed with perfectly timed guitars, with sudden dynamic upsurges scattered throughout the set. The group present a beautifully melancholy cover of the Michelle Branch

hit, Everywhere to Me, as well as showcasing their own skilful song writing capabilities.

Sometimes less is more. Three and a half hours at The Zoo this evening reveals it’s a maxim all three acts tonight might like to consider.

Across 40 minutes, local indie-popsters Little Scout at least show that they’re heading in the right direction.

Newer material — particularly the ooh-aah-filled Mountain Song and the delicate Long Gone — sparkles as Melissa Tickles voice blooms around spacious and instantly appealing guitar and bass phrases. The flipside are several tunes that just wallow — each instrument successing only in consuming the sound of the other.
