Mélanie Pain @ The Zoo, Brisbane 17 March 2009

Delivering confessional folk-pop chansons in English and French with the coy, breathy vocals of an ingénue, Mélanie Pain has the sort of oeuvre and style that inspire descriptions like “sugar and spice”, “naughty but nice”. As one of the main voices of Nouvelle Vague since their debut album in 2004, she seduced audiences with sassy sweetness on originals and covers like This is Not a Love Song,    Mélanie Pain

Teenage Kicks, Killing Moon, Ever Fallen in Love and Dance with Me. Now Mélanie has come up with My Name, her own debut solo album which incorporates personal reflections and influences such as Françoise Hardy, Nick Cave, Claudine Longet, Nancy Sinatra and Leonard Cohen in an intimate, Continue reading Mélanie Pain @ The Zoo, Brisbane 17 March 2009

The Living End raise the alarm for arena tour (see what I did there?)
Everyone’s favourite Australian alternative rockabilly punk rock band The Living End have announced a tour of the East Coast and Perth taking place over the four Fridays in May. “So what!” I hear you shout. Well, before I continue I’ll ask you to calm down. Calm now? Good. The unusual thing about this tour is that dates in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth will be taking place in arenas. The tour will be the first time the Melbourne band has headlined an arena tour in Australia and will be the band’s only major city performances in 2009.

Coming along for the ride are Perth grunge act Gyroscope and blog buzz band (BBB?) Tame Impala. All four shows will be all-ages and for something quite unusual for arena shows, tickets will be under $60! The Living End will also be re-releasing White Noise with a bonus CD full of rare never released before tracks, and tickets buyers will be able to add the release onto the ticket price for a nominal fee. How’s that for service.

Ben Kweller @ The Zoo, Brisbane 9th April 2009

Ben Kweller returns to tour Australia in April in support of his new album Changing Horses, released through Shock Records.

The album is his fourth full-length and was produced by Kweller and recorded mostly in Austin, TX, where he and his family recently re-located.

benkweller1

The title is meaningful as it represents a sea change for the 27-year-old Texan-bred musician. Beginning with his first record, Sha Sha, released in 2002, Kweller’s albums have always been stylistically restless, moving from indie rock to ballads to anti-folk to melodic rock, often from song to song.

Bon Iver @ The Tivoli, Brisbane 17 Jan 2009 Photos and Review

Matt Burgess of Burgo’s Blog attended the show and writes:

“Last night, I had probably the most visceral experience of my life, watching Bon Iver perform live at the Tivoli in Brisbane. To call it sublime would be an understatement.

It was over two years ago (side note: how fast is time going these days? I mean, honestly…) that the dulcet tones of Justin Vernon first made their ways to my ears. I managed to catch the tail end of the Hazeltons days/post DeYarmond Edison days, but really – if I’m honest – I was probably only fully hooked when I first heard Skinny Love. It’s a cardinal sin to admit something like that, when you’re a music blogger (especially considering the strength of the Hazeltons era), but that’s the moment when I realised that this was… different. That there was something transcendent in this music. So when the news made its way to me that Bon Iver would be performing at the Tivoli, I knew I would be going.

And man, am I glad I did.”…

STEREOLAB announce supports for Australian Tour

stereolab Prodigious, influential, boundary-pushing UK group STEREOLAB return to Australia after a six year hiatus to play two highly-anticipated side shows in Sydney and Melbourne, in addition to the national St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Over the course of their 17-year history, the enviable, genre-shifting writing talents of Tim Ganes and the eloquent, elegant vocals of singer Laeticia Sadler have been honed to perfection, as evidenced on their 2008 release, Chemical Chords. At once experimental and crowd-pleasing, STEREOLAB have assured themselves a place in the in the indie-rock canon and are a live proposition not to be missed.

Stray Cats @ The Tivoli, Brisbane 26-27 February 2009

It’s been a long, long, too long a wait but finally Brian Setzer, Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker will be back down under on their Farewell World Tour.

Formed in 1979 the Stray Cats took the world by storm with their infectious rockabilly musical stylings and frenetic live shows.
