There is so much to do and see at the Abbey Medieval Festival and Tournament you won’t know where to begin! Whether you’re into hands on activities, spectator sport, music, dancing or medieval food and wine you will be able to make the most of your time at the Tournament.

Music
Medieval Music & Bands, haunting melodies from harpists, trumpeters, flute and lute players, including Gregorian chanting and some of Australia’s leading medieval bands.

Medieval Encampments
Explore and wonder in over 30 re-enactor encampments, from Vikings to Knights in Armour, authentic representations of medieval life from 600-1600AD, do not miss the ever popular Shuvani Romani gypsy encampment, or the colourful 15th Century encampment of the Knights order of Lion Rampant.

Jousting
The breathtaking and highly charged Joust, when knights on their trusted war horses tilt for the honour of Champion of the Lists.  Abbey Medieval Festival will host the largest jousting tournament ever held in Australia in 2007with international participants from Belgium and New Zealand.

Street Theatre, Dancing & Games
Medieval theatre and games, including jugglers, puppetry, dancing, and costume parades for your entertainment.
Medieval Masque Ball brings your mask and dance to the fabulous melodies of Musica Prima in our spectacular Medieval Masque Ball on Saturday night the 12th of July.

Evening Markets
Australia’s most authentic medieval Markets, nearly a hundred stallholders covering a huge range of products, arts and crafts.  Whatever you’re looking for, it’ll be here! This year’s markets will open until 6:30pm on Saturday, 12th July 2008.

Fighting Displays
Combat from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance (450 – 1600 AD).  Different fighting styles and archery, tourneys, melees and individual combats including- Viking, Dark Age, High Middle Ages and Byzantine warriors, German landsknechts (mercenaries), Turkish janissaries and exquisite Renaissance swordsmen.

Human Chess Game
For the first time at the Abbey Medieval Festival, a game of human chess will be on show.
It follows a story dating back to 1454 when two young gentlemen played to settle which man should woo the lady they were in love with. An event will be repeated at the Abbey Medieval Festival on Saturday 12th July.
Sumptuous costumes, multi-colour banners, martial parades and exquisite elegance. This show will have over 50 characters and will go for about half-hour.

Workshops
Dancing, Crafts, Hobby Horses, Masque making, shield painting for kids, crown painting, princess hat making, Adult and Junior Medieval Cookery School, Knights School, Jester School and much more.

Lectures
Visitors have the opportunity to learn all manner of facts and figures when they visit the university pavilion on tournament days.

Visit the Abbey Church
Be awed by its ancient stained glass- some from Winchester Cathedral and enjoy the medieval sound of Gregorian chant.

Brisbane International Film Festival

The 17th Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) brings you the best and most interesting cinema from Australia and around the world. It is held at three city locations, with special sessions for families and young people. BIFF presents an entertaining mix of local and international films, retrospectives, seminars, special guests, and other events that embrace the vibrant art of filmmaking.

This Year’s Festival will showcase a selection of early films by French filmmaker, Olivier Assayas; 1970s Austrlian explotation films; and films relating to terrorism and resistance in Europe.

BIFF also incorporates Cinesparks – The Australian Film Festival for Young People, which includes free screenings for school groups and special workshops to assist the next generation of filmmakers.

In addition, the festival hosts BIFF in the Burbs that will screen a number of free films at suburban locations around SE Queensland in August.

The celebrations will culminate in the 20th Anniversary World Expo 88 Celebrations Concert brought to you by 4BH 882 in the Suncorp Piazza, recreating the magic of Expo’s vaudeville entertainment program.

The self guided tour will mark the locations of key pavilions and attractions, providing imagery and a brief history for each.

The celebrations will also feature a Kids Expo attraction, International Beer Hall, which will pay tribute to the German Festhaus, and a memorabilia display.

Official television station of the 20th Anniversary World Expo 88 Celebrations, Channel Nine, will produce a documentary to commemorate the occasion.
The documentary will air on Nine on the evening of the 20th Anniversary World Expo 88 Community Day Celebrations, Saturday May 10.

An estimated 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the 12th annual Buddha Birth Day Festival. The Festival is a signature cultural event for Queensland and is now one of the largest Buddhist celebrations in the world.

Endorsing this year’s theme of “Harmony in All”, the Festival promotes a peaceful existence and appreciation of Australia’s multicultural identity and focuses on generating community and individual ‘respect for life’.

Spread over 12 locations throughout the South Bank Parklands, the Buddha Birth Day Festival involves over 700 volunteers, 300 performers, 200 events, 2 performance stages, a fireworks display, 21 information and meditation sessions including 2 multi-faith forums, 18 Cultural, Art and Environmental activities for the children, a Children’s Amusement Area with a number of rides, an Art Exhibition, an organised Festival tour for over 1,000 school children, 50 food and merchandise stalls and 4 Official functions including the Opening Ceremony on Saturday night.

The GreazeFest is Australia’s annual kustom kulture weekender celebrating rockabilly and psychobilly music, custom cars, vintage bikes and lowriders, pinstriping, low brow artwork, dancing, fashion, and other cool stuff born in the 1950s.

Now in it’s ninth year, the GreazeFest has become a yearly pilgrimage for rockabilly and kustom kulture fans from all parts of the globe.
