Rufus Wainwright announces headline Australian shows – March 2015
Melding both the beautifully moving with the powerful and bombastic; the broad spectrum of Rufus Wainwright’s talents will be on full display when he returns to Australia in 2015 to perform his most revered and beloved songs. Live Review | The Tea Party @ Palais Theatre, Melbourne – October 12, 2014

The Tea Party set kicks off with a new album (“The Ocean at The End” ) sandwich of The L.O.C. and The Black Sea (with a filling of perennial favourite The Bazaar) highlighting just how crunchy the new offering is. Gone is the flowery bloat and overly-earnest emotive slather which marred the late-career albums, in its stead a return to the screeching wail of a well-throttled Les Paul backed by a thumping backline.

In the great lottery of the Sidewave venue scramble, Placebo must surely have pulled the short straw. Not that St Kilda’s Palais Theatre is generally anything to be disappointed with – its grungy dilapidation holds a special place in Melbourne’s rock vernacular. But when it comes to a furious set by one of the world’s best emotive post-punk purveyors, those torn leather seats are just woeful.
Seated gigs are sometimes just the pits, with often fickle gig-going punters varying between reckless abandon and a studied aloofness, meaning that on any given night you can find yourself jumping to your heart’s content surrounded by fellow revellers, or having to reign in your exuberance or suffer the fate of a thousand daggers shot your way.

The resurrected Lilith Fair music festival, co-founded by Canadian musician Sarah McLachlan in North America made its way to Australia in the condensed version – A Taste of Lilith. In contrast to the usual male-dominated bills of most music festivals, Lilith Fair celebrates female singer-songwriters and female-fronted bands across a variety of genres with the aim of breaking the artists into new markets. From each ticket sold, $1 is donated to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation in Australia. |
A Taste of Lilith got off to a bumpy start amid date changes and major act Court Yard Hounds dropping off the bill. Melbourne’s line-up included Sarah McLachlan, Kate Miller-Heidke and The Verses (formerly Killing Heidi). One international act from the North American lineup (to replace Court Yard Hounds) would’ve rounded out the show, Miller-Heidke and The Verses appeared more like support acts to McLachlan’s star. The rescheduling and possibly Melbourne’s freak monsoon affected the turnout, but the dramas were all but forgotten by McLachlan’s eager fans who waited 5 years to see her perform in Australia again.

THE BLACK RYDER sign deals in Japan & USA + Supporting THE CULT on their National Tour!

Since releasing their debut album ‘Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride’ in November last year, The Black Ryder have been busy gearing up for it’s international release, this month signing deals in Japan and the USA.
In Japan the album will be released through Vinyl Junkie recordings and in the USA through cool indie label ‘Mexican Summer’, home to artists such as Wooden Shjips, Dungen, and The Tallest Man On Earth, to name but a few. The Black Ryder will head to the US for shows later in the year in support of the release. |
