Theatre Review: Waiting for Godot – Theatre Performance, 29th April 2010

Waiting for Godot   A play about nothing? It sounds like a Seinfeld spin off, but Waiting for Godot was actually written almost sixty years ago. At the time, entertainment which focused on absolutely nothing was a revolutionary idea: post millennium we’ve been exposed to more than our fair share of popular media centred on not much more than ordinary people talking amongst themselves. But as tonight’s performance shows, nothing can still be a captivating, entertaining concept. Hosted by the Queensland Theatre Company in their Bille Brown Studio in West End, Waiting for Godot is delivered to a room packed with an appreciative audience.

Henry Rollins Frequent Flyer Tour – Brisbane Powerhouse, 20th April 2010 : Live Review

Henry Rollins   Henry Rollins, ex front man of punk rock bands Black Flag and Rollins Band, is a charismatic man. He has the presence and easy manner that comes from half a lifetime on stage but this is tempered by the time spent on his more austere pursuits of observation, self imposed isolation and a hell of a lot of reading. Tonight he’s solo on stage, sharing the contents of his mind in the Brisbane Powerhouse for the first of three Brisbane shows – two added to the bill due to popular demand, despite the fact that Rollins has travelled to Australia no less than 27 times in the last 20 years.

Rollins works, moves, looks like a boxer. Short staccato sentences are tapped out relentlessly, full stops after every syllable working the ear drums of the audience. This is utilitarian prose: make the audience think, laugh, empathise; uplift and unsettle them. Do not waste a single letter. The rags mimic the approach– close cropped hair, plain black fitted t-shirt (that reveals he’s still in great shape), drill pants and sneakers – a perfectly functional outfit. There are no breaks – not for Rollins, not for us. One hundred and sixty five minutes of verbal onslaught.

Astonishing images of crumbling beauty and battered grandeur will emerge from time beaten suitcases, telling a funny, sad and truly nostalgic story of a forsaken flat, a broken heart and the ache for home.

It is 1966. England is a derelict wasteland. The BBC’s Emergency Broadcast System is our only hope. Let’s see who’s on line 1.

Four Minute Warning takes a look at history and gets it wrong. Germany won WWII with nuclear weapons. England’s survivors are living in bunkers. Albert is defiant. Ted is bored. What happens when the stiff upper lip starts to quiver? The mindset is outdated. The situation is dire. Four Minute Warning is hilarious.

Written by and starring Neil Sinclair (Raw Comedy winner 2008, Comedy Zone at MICF2009) and Doug Pickering (McPony, Sainsburize Me!), Four Minute Warning has been performed monthly at The Butterfly Club, with sell out shows, and is developing a cult status.

Patrons under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult (18+)

The comedy, colour, glitz and glamour of Queensland’s gay community and its stories will be celebrated in the world premiere of Homoneurotic Cabaret at Judith Wright Centre on Friday 5 June 2009.

Green Room Award winner Jacob Diefenbach joins an all-star Brisbane cast in Homoneurotic, which will “thoroughly entertain” audiences, says producer Chris Maver (The Fruit Tingle Cabaret, In The Pink).

“Homoneurotic is a great night out at the theatre; it’s entertaining, thought-provoking, subversive and full of comedy, controversy, colour, glitter and glamour,” Chris said.

Australia, prepare yourself for the razzle-dazzle of the hit musical Chicago, set to tour nationally throughout 2009 following a Gala Opening at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre, QPAC. Winner of six Tony Awards®, two Olivier Awards, a Grammy® and thousands of standing ovations, Chicago is Broadway’s longest-running Musical Revival and the longest running American Musical every to play the West End.

It is nearly a decade since the “story of murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery” played in Australia. Known for its sizzling score and sensational choreography, Chicago is the story of a nightclub dancer, a smooth talking lawyer and a cell block of sin and merry murderesses.

“I’m thrilled to bring back to the Australian stage this wonderful musical, especially with the extraordinary cast we have assembled. Velma Kelly is the role which took Caroline O’Connor to Broadway for the first time, and her legion of fans will, I’m sure, be overjoyed to see her perform it once again. Sharon Millerchip has previously played Velma in Chicago ten years ago, and since has won awards for her many musical theatre roles. She will be an astonishing Roxie. Craig McLachlan blew us all away with his incredible audition, and he’s going to astound people with his talent as a musical theatre performer. And I am very excited to welcome Gina Riley back to the stage. Her strength, her presence and her powerhouse voice will make her a staggering Mama Morton. This truly is the perfect cast.
