Q&A with Dan Newton – Galapogos

Q&A with Dan Newton of band Galapogos

Galapogos are launching their second album “Feel Or Suffer” at The Zoo, Brisbane on Friday December 6, 2013

:: What track changed your life ::
I think “Sandy” which was performed by John Travolta on the Grease soundtrack describes a lot about the kind of ache I love to hear in any music I listen to, so that’s probably the first song that comes to mind when I think about the concept of having my life changed by music. I was 9 when I first heard it and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Tonight’s line up at Sydney’s Metro Theatre was nothing if not unique.

Each of the three bands possess highly distinct sonic aesthetics that set them apart not only from one another, but the rest of the current metal scene. It promised to be an interesting night of heavy metal and we’re sure no one left disappointed.

The Jezabels new single “The End” (Official Music Video)

Ask Hayley Mary of The Jezabels what the difference is between complexity and accessibility in pop music, and she doesn’t miss a beat. “There isnʼt one,” says The Jezabels front woman, “or at least, there doesn’t need to be. To me, pop is the darkest music of all. If you look not at what pop artists are consciously doing but at what they’re reflecting about the world, pop is the most twisted, weird and scary stuff. If you wanted to study the Earth from an alien perspective, listen to pop music.”

The Jezabels are arch players of this contradiction. With The Jezabels there’s always a twist and they delight in toying with the darkness that somehow cloaks us all and yet channel it into songs that are layered with bright, chiming seams of pop.

Live Review: Circles + Dawn Heist + Red Bee + Beggars Orchestra @ The Bald Faced Stag, Sydney – November 9, 2013

Words and pics by: Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au
Contemporary Australian metal was on show in a big way tonight at Sydney’s Bald Faced Stag Hotel in Leichardt. The small room has played host to a surprising number of high-profile acts over the last couple of years, including some of the last shows by Suicide Silence before Mitch Lucker’s untimely passing and a recent show by UK noise merchants Rolo Tomassi. Tonight, Melbourne djent exponents Circles hit the joint, promoting their debut full-length album, ‘Infinitas’.

Three other Aussie acts helped get the night’s proceedings underway, starting with local act Beggars Orchestra. The band kicks off to a pretty empty room, but thoroughly entertains the assembled group that clearly includes a large contingent of enthusiastic friends and fans with their unique mix of dynamic and dramatic songs. They’re good to watch, with some good stage presence and while the vocal harmonies get better as the set progresses, overall they’re a great addition to tonight’s line up.
