The Lawrence Arms stream new album “Metropole” (Full Album Stream)

Photo - Credit Ben PierMetropole is the first album in 8 years from the Chicago bred trio. It’s a blistery, hook-heavy sound with a lyrical narrative that captures what vocalist/bassist Brendan Kellys calls “that alone-in-a-crowd, stranger-in-a-strange-land kind of shit—a feeling of such weird solitude that you don’t even know what’s up and what’s down”. Brendan Kelly, Chris McCaughan (vocals/guitar), and Neil Hennessey (drums) took their wide range of influences and inspirations from both classic punk/hardcore bands including Jawbreaker, NOFX, Propaghandi, Bad Religion and late-’90s hip hop like Outkast’s Aquemini to create their most dynamic record to date. The samples heard throughout the album are sound recordings of street musicians, recorded by the band on their cell phones. Take the horn at the start of “Acheron River” that Kelly describes as “a dude on his back in the middle of the road, so drunk he couldn’t even see.” Or the piano at the end of “Seventeener (17th and 37th) that was a grand piano someone was playing in the middle of the street. Everything from accordion to bagpipes helps capture the urban isolation that saturates so much of Metropole.

The Jezabels new single “The End” (Official Music Video)

Ask Hayley Mary of The Jezabels what the difference is between complexity and accessibility in pop music, and she doesn’t miss a beat. “There isnʼt one,” says The Jezabels front woman, “or at least, there doesn’t need to be. To me, pop is the darkest music of all. If you look not at what pop artists are consciously doing but at what they’re reflecting about the world, pop is the most twisted, weird and scary stuff. If you wanted to study the Earth from an alien perspective, listen to pop music.”

The Jezabels are arch players of this contradiction. With The Jezabels there’s always a twist and they delight in toying with the darkness that somehow cloaks us all and yet channel it into songs that are layered with bright, chiming seams of pop.

DAMN TERRAN – RATIONAL ECONOMIC MAN [Video Clip]

Combining the talents of brothers Lachlan (guitar and vocals) and Leigh Ewbank (drums) as well as Ali Edmonds (bass) Damn Terran have rightfully earned a reputation for being one of Melbourne’s most incendiary live bands.

‘Rational Economic Man’ is four minutes of addictive tension and release. Anger and control play out meticulously in staccato chords, stop/start rhythms and Ewbank’s melodic yet virulent vocals.

To capture Rational Economic Man’s raucous glory, Damn Terran invited dedicated fans and curious punters to a Melbourne warehouse for the filming of its accompanying video clip. The entire clip was shot using head-cameras worn by the band and members of the audience, resulting in a realistic view of both band and fan alike.

WINTER STREET – THERE WE STAND [MP3 Stream]

There We Stand – Winter Street by showoffservices

Great things and monumental disasters often begin with words that run along lines like this, “I can’t promise that this will turn out well, but we’ll see”… Such words were spoken by Tom Iansek, guitarist/vocalist for Big Scary and erstwhile producer for Melbourne agents of devastatingly concise indie rock, Winter Street.

The Waifs – Falling

Temptation - The Waifs   Temptation – The Waifs
“Where do we take it from here?”
It’s a question the much-loved Australian band has asked itself several times in the 19 years since Thorn, her sister Donna Simpson and guitarist Josh Cunningham set off on their incredible journey.

A trip that began in a van in 1992, with the three troubadours playing gigs anywhere in Australia that would have them, has led The Waifs to multiple ARIA awards, platinum albums and successful tours across the world. The hard yards in those early days paid off in terms of their career, but also bound the three of them together as friends.
