Interview with Winston McCall of Parkway Drive [Part 3]

READ PART 1 OF THIS INTERVIEW HERE.    –    READ PART 2 OF THIS INTERVIEW HERE.

Winston McCallLMM – I also wanted to talk about the different producers on your last two albums and their contribution to the finished sound on both releases. What was the best thing about working with Adam Dutkiewicz on Horizons?

WM – With Adam?

LMM – Yeah. He’s had his fair share of musical experience. How did it first come about that he worked on the album with you?

WM – He worked on the first two albums we did which was absolutely wonderful. He came along at a time when we were still a young band and had no idea what to do and came up with the idea of either recording in Australia that would be a very national sounding recording or do something overseas that would really stand out in the international scene.

Interview: Hannah Collins

Winston McCallOut on the run, and sitting quietly in a car it’s about 11.30AM when the phone rings.

It’s an anticipated call, an exciting sound, I answer, my heart beating with suspended animation.

LMM – Hello Hannah Speaking
WM – Hey Hannah It’s Winston [McCall] from Parkway Drive here.

LMM – So have you done a few interviews already this morning?
WM – No I haven’t actually, this is the first one.

LMM – Really? So you got to have a bit of a sleep in?
WM – *Laughs* Yeah a little bit!

LMM – Good Stuff. So you’ve been touring off the back of your latest release, Deep Blue, having done a recent national tour. The Brisbane leg of the show was stated to be (in your own words) one of or even the biggest headlining shows that you’ve played in Australia.

Interview with Winston McCall of Parkway Drive [Part 2]

READ PART 1 OF THIS INTERVIEW HERE.    –    READ FINAL PART OF INTERVIEW HERE!

Winston McCallLMM – Parkway Drive have played with some huge names in metal, like Killswitch Engage, Chimaira and In Flames. They’re all huge names in your genre so do you think there’s a reason that you feel a little bit more intimidated playing on the No Sleep Til tour?

WM – Well definitely because there’s a bunch of bands on the line up that we’re really good friends with..ie a Day to Remember among others but at the same time there’s bands that I’ve wanted to see for a hell of a long time that I’ve never gotten to see before, like NOFX and of course Descendants. We found out about NOFX first and we though to play with them would be insane cause we’re all massive NOFX fans from way back, we’re pretty big punk fans! Then we found out about Descendants those freaks! It’s insane to have a bill like that and its mind warping we’re playing with them. Its gunna be a really, really long day put it that way!

SPECTACULAR RACING TOPS OFF STELLAR GOLD COAST WEEKEND

A crowd of 58,977 spectators has enjoyed a hot day and hot racing on the streets of the Gold Coast today for the third and final day of the Armor All Gold Coast 600.

Today’s crowd brings the Event’s total tally to 170,073 fans across the three days, a result Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said was spectacular.

“This Event means jobs, it means tourism, this is too important for the Gold Coast, and with 170,000 odd spectators over three days, that is great for the Gold Coast,” said Minister Reeves.

“The aerial shots from today’s action that are being shown around the world show what the Gold Coast has to offer, and you couldn’t pay for that kind of advertising and the benefits will be ongoing – what a fantastic result.”

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser echoed the Minister for Sport’s statements.

“There isn’t a spectator that was here today that will go home disappointed, or anyone that would have watched that on television and not hung on right to the last lap, that was competitive racing with the best backdrop in Surfers Paradise and it’s a wonderful thing,” said Fraser.

“No doubt the event has met the mark this year, we will make a formal assessment next year but right now it is firmly in pole position.”

Entertaining the spectators today was the second 300 kilometer, 120 lap battle for V8 Supercar glory on the streets, with reigning Champion Jamie Whincup and co-driver Steve Owen taking the honours after a hard-fought race which culminated in a furious battle for the lead between Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen across the final segment.

Van Gisbergen eventually crossed the line in second, seeing he and co-driver John McIntyre on the second step of the podium while Mark Winterbottom had a determined drive through the field after a mishap during his pit stop, to see he and his co-driver Luke Youlden claim third today.

“That is certainly up there as far as wins, we were a sitting duck there at the end but the car was a long way from yesterday, we reinvited the wheel which is not uncommon in motrsport, a tune up here or a tweak there, a spring change and so on, massive amount of changes last night, and the car was a lot better today,” said Whincup.

“We still used the rear tyres, but it was a fun battle with Shane, we raced hard but fair. That is what it is all about!”

Van Gisbergen was also happy with the battle to the finish although he wasn’t able to stand on the top step.

“It was definitely on at the end there and we were trying pretty hard, Jamie was driving really well, it was a great fight and I am pretty happy with the result, I would have been happy with third but second is better!” said van Gisbergen.

Priaulx was the highest placed international driver, placing tenth with his driving partner Lowndes in the TeamVodafone machine after they placed second in yesterday’s race, receiving a special trophy for his efforts.

Priaulx wasn’t alone in enjoying the weekend’s action, with Castroneves just one of the drivers expressing excitement at the prospect of coming back.

“Yes! It’s like Dancing With The Stars – so much fun. I gotta do it,” said Castroneves when asked if he would come back next year if he could.

The V8 Supercars weren’t the only cars thrilling the crowd today, with a special trip down memory lane arranged for the fans this morning when the infamous 1977 1-2 Bathurst finish of Alan Moffat and Colin Bond was recreated before their eyes.

During their session this morning, the cars did laps for the crowd before the entire field slowed to walking pace, apart from the cars of Moffat and Bond, who continued on at ‘race pace’ to recreate the form finish across the start/finish line.

However it wasn’t exactly as before, with the pair changing it up to see Bond cross the line first.

“This is a fantastic event to be a part of. It was terrific to recreate probably the most memorable moment in my motor racing career,” said Moffat

“It was great to spend time with the drivers from my era.

“The Bathurst Regional City Council and the National Motor Racing Museum must be congratulated for giving up the car for this weekend.

“The last time we went around it was 1-2, this time around it was 2-1, so I guess the score is even between Colin and myself. Who knows…we might have to get together for the decider.”

Also on track today were the Yokahama V8 Utes, the Hertz MINI Challenge pocket rockets and the Genuine Ford Parts Australia Formula Ford Championship.

Taking race wins in the Utes today were Rhys Mc Nally for race two and Grant Johnson for race three, with Chris Pither taking the round honours.

In the MINI Challenge and Formula Ford racing it was Glenn Seton and Chaz Mostert respectively who took the race three spoils, with Paul Stokell and Mostert winning the rounds respectively. Mostert dominated his category with three wins from three races allowing him to extend his championship lead significantly.

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 has taken place across three days October 22-24, and is a partnership between the Queensland Government and V8 Supercars Australia. For more information on the event, please visit www.goldcoast600.com.au

Woodford Folk Festival’s 25th Anniversary Programme Release [Festival News]

Woodford Folk Festivals 25th Anniversary programme is the most resplendent programme ever presented, promising an epic journey into the kaleidoscope of Australian culture. 3000 performers and artists, thinkers and cultural activists, environmentalists and comedians, and two former Prime Ministers will descend upon the forested valley of Woodfordia between the 27th December and the 1st of January to celebrate our existence in true Australian style.

With an expected aggregate attendance of 120,000 patrons, Woodford has evolved into one of Australia’s largest and most iconic festivals. Despite its large size, the festival has retained its grassroots, non-commercial feel. It is popular with all ages, and the ‘brilliant’ festival atmosphere is the most highly rated aspect of the event in visitor surveys. In addition to the 620 acts performing across 22 venues (all indoor except for the large amphitheatre), the festival streets are alive with roving street theatre, parades, art and spontaneous performances day and night.

At the heart of the Woodford Folk Festival is the 500-acre festival site, Woodfordia, a regenerated cattle property that has become the living, growing expression of thousands of people who have contributed to the cumulative vision of a cultural parkland and subtropical arboretum dedicated to the arts.

The musical line-up this year captures the very essence of this ‘folk in spirit’ festival, just a few of the highlights include The Cat Empire, Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and The Captains, Blue King Brown, Tim Freedman, Archie Roach, Mama Kin, Jeff Lang, Lior, Microwave Jenny, Dubmarine, Felix and The Phoenix, Hermitude, Marshall and The Fro, Cumbia Cosmonauts, The Barons of Tang, Basement Birds, The Break, TinPan Orange, Vika and Linda Bull, Christa Hughes and The Honkytonk Shonks, Flap!, Tijuana Cartel, Drawn from Bees, The Chemist, Leah Flanagan, kooii, Laneous and The Family Yah, Radical Son, Jackie Marshall, That 1 Guy, The Little Stevies, Shane Howard and his Band, Yeshe and You Am I.

Woodford’s international guests include Arrested Development (USA), The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker (USA), the incredible Katzenjammer (Norway), Baskery (Sweden), BBC World Music Award winners Daara J Family (Senegal), and from Canada, the crazy Tom Fun Orchestra, Jill Barber, Dan Mangan and Matthew Barber. From the UK comes Passenger, from the USA Love in the Circus, Stevie Salas and Bernard Fowler, and The Whitetop Mountaineers, and from the 70’s Mani Neumeier with Etsuko Watanabe.

The GreenHouse venue talks the walk of the environmental ethos that underpins the Woodford Folk Festival. Have your green Myths busted, meet green Innovators and make an educated choice about the next ten years of climate change. The Great Green Debate at the Concert stage examines The Spirit of Resistance (still) Lives! To fan The Flames of Discontent, Professor Ian Lowe will join Jack Mundey along with green activists, unionists and historians for a forum on the Green Bans of the 70’s.

Folklorica presents an incredibly rich tapestry of the sacred, traditional and ceremonial drawing on the diversity within our Australian culture. With Genghis Khan’s Songlines take a journey along the Silk Road, join a Gypsy Wedding, and revere the powerful voice of Jamyang Dolma from Tibet. ABC Radio National’s presenter Geoff Wood has programmed The Rhythm Divine, a selection of sacred music artists based in Australia.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Disturbia 2, go forward to 2525 humans have evolved into a new species of Pumans, part pig part human …

Make sure to visit the new Pineapple Lounge, piano bar and cocktail lounge, where Shampine flows in the magical garden, Wiley Reed tinkles the keys by night and Bogan Bingo is a daily ritual.

The Children’s Festival is also larger than ever before. Children can build a Permaculture garden, create, cook, dance and be enchanted by theatre, puppetry and song. New Years Eve sees them adorned with their own creations, in a swathe of bubbles and music in the Children’s Festival Procession through the festival streets.

Professor Timothy Sharp, happiness expert, can teach you how to sleep your way to the top, and The Bedroom Philosopher will have you in stitches. Learn Shamanic Drumming and get irie after dark in the Dancehall. Wander through the visual arts workshops in Penny Arcade to the Arti.Arti venue, where writers, artists and performers will cast your assumptions and fixed ideas aside to make way for new ideas. All the while there will be Gremlins building a Rocket Ship out of whatever they can nab, so hold onto your hat.

Whatever you do, don’t miss Woodford Folk Festival this year; it really will be a momentous journey. We invite you to join the pilgrimage, come and be a part of our 25th anniversary celebration.

Programmes and tickets are available on the Woodford Folk Festival website www.woodfordfolkfestival.com or call the Queensland Folk Federation on 07 5496 1066. Selected newsagents have the programmes, check online for these outlets.

Since its inception in 2004, the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival has become synonymous, as they say, with hot summer days, awesome locations and diverse, forward-thinking line-ups filled to overflowing with vital, surprising bands. Favouring cutting edge talent over mainstream success, Laneway has consistently delivered compelling, boundary-pushing acts to discerning punters and next year’s event will continue that tradition.

In 2011, Laneway returns to the disparate yet uniformly gorgeous metropolitan settings of Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland. Whether the backdrop is an historic sandstone courtyard, a riverbed overlooking the city or a tree-lined laneway a stone’s throw from the CBD, we guarantee a day of musical discovery and revelry that‘ll be as scenic as it will be memorable.

Next year’s event will also feature a stage co-programmed by our friends at The Windish Agency (Chicago) and Eat Your Own Ears (London). These two tastemakers are among the most respected in their territories and their involvement reflects both their close association with the Laneway Festival and our commitment to uncovering the freshest artists from every corner of the globe. Speaking of global, stay tuned for news on Laneway Festival’s official launch into Asia later this year!

The Laneway Festival is pleased to announce that its association with Young Care, an organisation which works to provide choice in care and accommodation options for over 700,000 young Australians who need it. All gold coin donations made at the festival will go directly towards Young Care.

MONDAY 31 JANUARY 2011 – AUCKLAND
Aotea Square, 303 Queen Street. Auckland Central (beside the Auckland Town Hall)
New Zealanders will experience their second Laneway Festival in the newly revamped Aotea Square (Auckland city’s new premier civic open space). The square itself is perfect for Laneway, with room to fit stalls, stages and audience comfortably, and more space and atmosphere than ever. Punters will have access to two different stages, enough amenities to cater for those wanting to wander between the stages or stay in front of their favourite all day, plus local arts showcases and delicious cuisine.

FRIDAY 4 FEBRUARY 2011 – BRISBANE
Alexandria St off St Paul’s Terrace, Fortitude Valley (Twilight event)
Returning to the tree-lined streets of Alexandria Street in Queensland’s creative hub, Fortitude Valley, music lovers can check out their favourite bands in a casual friendly atmosphere. Kicking off in the early afternoon, the 2011 event will introduce an extra stage so you can watch bands inside, outside, on a car park, or on the street. The Festival will again feature local designer markets and loads of food stalls. Result.

SATURDAY 5 FEBRUARY 2011 – MELBOURNE
Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC)
In 2010 we found a beautiful home for Melbourne’s Laneway Festival in the fabulous surrounds of Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC), and we’re staying put in 2011 to bring you more of a good thing. An oasis in the heart of the (greater) city just two train stops from the CBD, and set on the banks of the Maribyrnong river with the city as a backdrop, the site is the perfect spot to check out your favourite bands. Teaming up again with our friends at Footscray Community Arts Centre, we’ve managed to make the space a little bigger, the day a little longer and the grass a little greener. There will be more amenities, more food, more (free!) trains and more music than ever! Again, there will be three very different stages to wander to and from or settle in front of all day, plus local arts showcases and cuisine.
A fresh cultural hotspot, Footscray is an area of Melbourne that’s fast becoming renowned for its grass-roots arts community (FCAC is a mecca for original contemporary community-based art). It’s perfectly in line with Laneway’s continuing support of the unique and undiscovered, and we’re extremely excited to be hosting the Festival there again. The feeling is mutual: “We’re thrilled to co-present the Melbourne edition of the fabulous St Jerome’s Laneway Festival in 2011. Last year’s Festival was amazing and we can’t wait to welcome back thousands of music-loving fans to our beautiful arts centre for some more FootscraZy fun” (Jennifer Barry, Director and CEO, FCAC).

SUNDAY 6 FEBRUARY 2011 – SYDNEY
Sydney College of the Arts (SCA), Rozelle
The gorgeous setting of the historic courtyards of the SCA in Rozelle made for a pretty special festival in 2010 (not to mention some fairly stunning photos). We are thrilled to be returning to the sandstone buildings in 2011, bringing with us more fine food outlets and amenities to make your day as comfortable as possible.
The SCA is set in the pristine grounds of Callan Park and is a short cab, light rail or bus ride from Sydney’s CBD.

Friday 11 FEBRUARY 2011 – ADELAIDE
Fowler’s Live, North Terrace (Twilight event)
Adelaide punters can expect a certain level of intimacy with the kinds of bands that don’t often get to their fair city when the Laneway Festival returns to the iconic Adelaide venue, Fowler’s Live. Located among the towering urban surrounds of the University of SA (City West campus) it is one of the most intimate Laneway sites. The addition of extra catering and shady hang out areas, plus a second outdoor stage in Fenn Place – original site of the Fringe Outdoor Stages in the early 90’s – increases the space of Adelaide Laneway without affecting the friendly Fowler’s Live based intimacy.
With a strictly limited capacity, the Laneway Festival promises an unforgettable experience within the tree-lined courtyard of Fowler’s Live.

Saturday 12 FEBRUARY 2011 – PERTH*
Perth Cultural Centre, Northbridge
In 2011, Laneway will again take over the Perth Cultural Centre however there will be some pretty nifty changes to last year’s layout. To accommodate the newly developed Wetlands, the local stage will now move to a special stage in the brand new Urban Orchard, which will house the cream of WA’s musical talent. The main stage will move from the Museum Stage to the Francis St stage. In other words, the Laneway Perth site will be bigger and better than in previous years.

*subject to council approval
