Friday: The weather gods have smiled upon us, after a week of much needed rain the clouds have parted and the sun is beaming down on a collection of camper vans, cars and kombis, most filled with reggae fans eagerly waiting to be loaded on to the Stradbroke Ferry. Island Vibe 09 awaits!
As the ferry pulls away from Cleveland port there is a collective sigh of relief & one’s first taste of what Straddie’s Island Vibe Festival has to offer is found sailing across Redland Bay meeting fellow festival goers. I can hear three different cars pumping reggae beats whilst other passengers take in the fresh air and scenery. Cars are packed to the rafters with tents, hammocks, pets and kids.

Welcome to Island Vibe – Australia’s finest eco festival celebrating music, dance, arts and Island Culture. Island Vibe runs over 3 magical days at Home Beach on Minjerribah (Stradbroke island), less than two hours from downtown Brisbane.
Each year Island Vibe attracts people the world over to gather and enjoy a diverse line up of great reggae, roots, dub, soul, world music and dancehall, whilst cultural dancers, circus performers and visual artists display their talents. As well as hosting a smashing array of international and national acts, a sizeable chunk of the program is dedicated to showcasing the fantastic emerging acts of South East Queensland and the South Pacific. The program this year is expanding to include more Island themed workshops and forums in a dedicated Island Rhythm space. |

Fraser Island – Queensland, Australia – 15 March 2008
Fraser Island – The worlds largest sand island is a paradise of immense beauty and wonder. Lush rainforests, crystal clear lakes, giant trees, enormous sandblows, shipwreck, wildlife, beaches and more…
I was fortunate to have a day of four-wheel driving through this wonderland and discovered an amazing array of contrasting landscapes (eg. forests that surrond huge sandblows). A day will only afford you visits to a small number of attractions (given the size of the island and the slowish pace required to navigate the sand tracks) and entice you back to see more. The Maheno shipwreck was definitely a hightlight as was the rain forest around “Central Station” – originally used as a logging station (what were people thinkin!). Also managed Wabby Lake and Lake mcKenzie (and when “they” say crystal clear – they really mean crystal clear).
This truly is a special place!
