Live Review | Mayday Parade + The Story So Far + Real Friends | The Metro Theatre, Sydney – February 26, 2014

Review by Scott Singh
mp-SydneyIn the middle of the Soundwave hype, three bands united to put on an exhilarating show at the Metro Theatre in Sydney. From the outcome of the show, it was clear that this combination of bands pulled off an adrenaline induced show.

Starting the night off to a full crowd, Real Friends played to fuel the antics of a wild crowd. During “Dirty Water” members of the crowd took it as their mission to ride to the front in order to grab some mic time with lead singer Dan. The amount of passion seen in this set was unbelievable and must be attributed to the packed venue of loyal fans. Having just played the Sydney Soundwave show on Sunday, the band still brought out the ferocity of their music. Raw vocals and a blistering punk rock sound allowed for the crowd to expend their leftover energy from the Soundwave festival.

Live Review | Alter Bridge + Living Colour | The Hi-Fi, Sydney – February 25, 2014

Review and photos by Ben Hosking
2014_AlterBridgeIt almost seems absurd that a chart-topping US rock band like Alter Bridge should be playing a venue as small as Sydney’s HiFi. So, it makes sense that tonight’s show – a Soundwave sideshow – should be completely sold out. Indeed, the line of punters stretches from the front door, around the side and turns back on itself to the front door. The Tremonti (AB’s guitarist) tattoo taking one guy’s entire lower leg tells us that he’s probably been here most of the day waiting.

Live Review | Rob Zombie + Korn + Mushroomhead | Big Top Luna Park, Sydney – February 24, 2014

2014_RobZombieWhat a freakin’ line up! Tonight’s Soundwave sideshow has sold out Luna Park’s Big Top and had punters lining up around the venue since 9am. It’s hardly surprising when you have Nu Metal legends Korn and comic super villain Rob Zombie headlining the same bill.

Opening tonight’s festivities are the masked crazies Mushroomhead. While their sound may not completely live up to their evil image, they offer an interesting three vocal assault, combining rap, screams and melodic vocals over a thickened bed of crushing riffs and soaring choruses. Tonight’s performance quickly whips up the early crowd, with all three singers launching into the crowd at one point.

Children of Bodom – ‘Halo of Blood’ Australian East Coast Tour 2014

bodomChildren of Bodom, a name that redefined a genre and made it their own and a name that continues to galvanise all walks of life and all Heavy Metal sub-genres within that culture, it’s a name that crosses genres and moulds them into the one army. In 2014, Children of Bodom return to Australia for an exclusive East Coast tour on the back of their strongest release to date that surpasses any of the band’s classic and ground breaking releases such as ‘Something Wild’, ‘Hatebreeder’ and ‘Follow The Reaper’.

Fronted by the charismatic Alexi Laiho, Children of Bodom deliver live performances that are nothing short of breathtaking with every show leaving the viewer spellbound and gasping for air. Such is the enormous amount of energy and entertainment the entire band puts out, simply stated, Children of Bodom back up their studio recordings with a non-stop battery and barrage to the senses of anyone that attends their shows, it’s the only way they know and long may it continue!

Live Review: Steven Wilson @ Metro Theatre, Sydney – October 3, 2013

As we arrive at Sydney’s Metro Theatre to a line of punters that stretches down that little side street and around the corner, we realise this will be one of this year’s more special musical events. The range of fans waiting patiently for Steven Wilson’s gig are as mixed and varied as the artist’s back catalogue, with young and old, male and female, overtly metal and overtly not…

After a short wait, watching a slow-moving animation of Wilson’s new album ‘The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)’, the band take to the stage to rapturous applause. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking it was country-mates One Direction taking to the stage and not the frontman of a proggy UK cult act like Porcupine Tree.

Live Review: KISS + Motley Crue @ Brisbane Entertainment Centre – 12 March 2013

Review by Michelle O’Rance
Two of the biggest names in rock’n’roll and heavy metal joined forces and descended upon Brisbane in a fiery, laser light filled show complete with upside down drum solos, acrobatics, ladies on stilts, flying musicians and pyrotechnics.

The elaborate stage set-up promised something big as the house lights dimmed and a single spotlight picked up the page bearers carrying the Motley Crue banners and leading a robed Nikki Sixx through the sea of people on the Entertainment Centre’s floor.
