Live Review | Rob Zombie + Korn + Mushroomhead | Big Top Luna Park, Sydney – February 24, 2014

Words and Pics: Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au
2014_RobZombieWhat a freakin’ line up! Tonight’s Soundwave sideshow has sold out Luna Park’s Big Top and had punters lining up around the venue since 9am. It’s hardly surprising when you have Nu Metal legends Korn and comic super villain Rob Zombie headlining the same bill.

Opening tonight’s festivities are the masked crazies Mushroomhead. While their sound may not completely live up to their evil image, they offer an interesting three vocal assault, combining rap, screams and melodic vocals over a thickened bed of crushing riffs and soaring choruses. Tonight’s performance quickly whips up the early crowd, with all three singers launching into the crowd at one point.

KORN return with new studio album “The Paradigm Shift”

Grammy Award-winning multiplatinum hard rock innovators KORN have revealed that their 11th studio album, will be released on October 4 2013. Titled ‘The Paradigm Shift’, it marks the emotional return of much-revered co-founding guitarist Brian ‘Head’ Welch for his first album with Korn since 2003’s ‘Take a Look in the Mirror’. This record serves as the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2011 dubsteb-metal hybrid ‘The Path of Totality’, which entered the Top 10 in the US Billboard chart and was hailed by Revolver Magazine as their ‘Album Of The Year’.

‘The Paradigm Shift’ is Korn’s first time working with super-producer Don Gilmore, whose legacy also includes producing Linkin Park’s legendary ‘Hybrid Theory’ album. Gilmore recorded the album at Buck Owens’ studio in their original hometown Bakersfield, and at Los Angeles’ famed NRG Recording Studios. Korn initially announced Head’s return via a captivating clip on rollingstone.com, and went on to discuss the reunion in this in-depth interview with artistdirect.com, to much excitement from the band’s dedicated fan base and the music community.

Filter “The Trouble with Angels” – CD Review

Review: Ben Hosking

At least in this country, Filter has never attained the level of success that they deserve. Besides a couple of chart-bothering flirtations with tracks like ‘Hey Man, Nice Shot’ and ‘Take a Picture’ way back in the mid-to-late 1990s, Richard Patrick and company have travelled unfairly under the radar. Hopefully the Cleveland, Ohio group’s luck will change with the release of their fifth studio album, The Trouble with Angels.

For those not familiar with Richard Patrick’s talent, take note: he began his professional career with industrial genius Trent Reznor as a touring guitarist

with Nine inch Nails between 1989 and 1993. After this he started Filter in 1995; Patrick’s bread and butter ever since – although certainly not his only musical preoccupation.

How to Destroy Angels [EP] – CD Review

Review: Ben Hosking

It didn’t take Trent Reznor long to begin making music again after shutting the doors on Nine Inch Nails last year. In fact, news was already surfacing about his new project around the time of his marriage to Mariqueen Maandig in October of 2009. The newlyweds didn’t just join in holy matrimony – they joined in musical harmony as well, forming How to Destroy Angels (HTDA), together with programmer/producer Atticus Ross (Korn/NIN/Coheed and Cambria).

Trent is no stranger to forward-thinking when it comes to the release and promotion of his music. 2005’s ‘With Teeth’ was streamed on NIN’s

MySpace page before its release and 2007’s ‘Year Zero’ saw Reznor creating elaborate ‘alternate reality’ games that fell in line with the concept of the album and leaked several tracks into the world prior to the album’s release. ‘Ghosts I-IV’ and NIN’s final album ‘The Slip’ were both offered as free downloads on the band’s website as well as part of deluxe physical limited-edition packages with phenomenal success.
