One 4 All – Karalbo @ Brisbane Powerhouse 16 October 2009
Photo and Review by José Eduardo Cruz

One 4 AllFor many reasons, tonight’s offering is nothing short of spectacular. This is theater at its rawest and most natural without the star attitude. The performers are not paid actors, nor are they trained or would they be considered seasoned professionals. Karalbo is a collaboration between several well know Brisbane artists and youths from various cultural backgrounds trying to find their place in an ever-changing society. The motivation behind this project was to present, if only to a few, a stage and an audience to express valuable stories and somehow come to grips with the duality that invariably comes when you are born and raised within a cultural construct and grow up within another predominant cultural construct that will, try as it may, always see you as an outsider.

Vanessa Amorosi, Michael Buble and P!nk top ARIA Charts on debut this week!

Vanessa Amorosi swoops on top spot on the ARIA Singles Chart this week with her hit “This Is Who I Am”, scoring her first ever No.1 single and at the same time, ending the seven-week chart topping run of David Guetta‘s “Sexy Bitch” (feat. Akon). It’s the first single to hit No.1 on debut since Flo Rida‘s “Right Round” back in February, and only the second to have achieved this feat in the past twenty-two months. “This Is Who I Am” becomes Vanessa’s fifth ARIA top 10 single, surpassing the No.4 peaks achieved by “Shine” in 2000 and “Perfect” in 2008. Vanessa also becomes the first Aussie artist to claim simultaneous No.1’s on the ARIA Physical and Digital Track Charts since “Sweet About Me” from Gabriella Cilmi in June 2008.

Live Review: Tom Ugly with The Rocketsmiths and Comic Sans @ The Troubadour, Brisbane

Review by: Bec

You can’t help but get excited about the youth music scene when you see bands like Comic Sans, The Rocketsmiths and Tom Ugly perform.

Hands down the best performance of the night was first support four-piece group, Comic Sans, who are in the throes of recording their first EP. This is a band to watch. Consistently brilliant and musically elusive, they wowed the small crowd at The Troubadour with a commanding display of musical dexterity and sophistication. They give a truly committed live performance that rivets your attention. Exciting; talented; you can’t ignore Comic Sans’ presence; they have the X factor.

CD Review: Suffocation – The Close of a Chapter (Live in Quebec)

Suffocation: The Close of a Chapter (Live in Quebec) 2005
Review: Lana Harris

Suffocation   ‘This is … Brutal!’ yells Frank Mullen at the end of The Close of a Chapter’s opening track, “Infecting the Crypts”. This is Suffocation. Birthed from the insomniac New York Underground, Suffocation clawed their way to the top of the death metal pit in the early nineties, with shadows of their unrelenting riffs and Mike Smith’s seminal blast beats cast across lesser black drum kits ever since. Suffocation captures the energy of a single moment of explosion and sticks it on endless repeat. And the lyrics are about killing people. Yeah, it’s brutal. But this isn’t a
dissection of the value of Suffocation’s music. That blood spattered throne has already been carved.

Soundwave 2010 – 2nd artist announcement

Soundwave 2010   After fifteen years, six studio albums, ten million album sales, breakdowns, clean ups and the dizzy swell of global success, few will argue that PLACEBO are among the world’s great rock bands. For the first time in three years the guys will be bringing their swag of hits to the Soundwave stages in 2010.

ANTHRAX redefined metal in the ’80s, stressing anger, speed, and emotional intensity over big hair and power ballads. After a stunning performance at the Sonisphere festival a huge campaign was waged by the fans to get John Bush back on vocals. We can proudly announce that John will indeed be fronting Anthrax for their Soundwave performances and this will surely have the bands faithful frothing at the mouth!

Motion City Soundtrack, Shinedown, Set Your Goals, Enter Shikari and Closure In Moscow will also be joining the already massive bill.

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS – This New Technology tour

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS + THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY

MIDNIGHT JUGGERNAUTS are an electro-pop synth rock group from Melbourne, Australia. The founding members, in a nod to the Ramones, renamed themselves Vincent Juggernaut and Andy Juggernaut. The two met in high school and played straightforward guitar rock together before moving on to experiment with synthesizers and dance music.

Live Review | UK Subs @ The Zoo, Brisbane 7 October 2009

Live Review: UK Subs @ The Zoo, Brisbane 7 October 2009

Review By Jose Eduardo Cruz

UKSubsThis rather cold Wednesday night presented itself as an interesting proposition from the start. It would have been safe to assume that if you had decided to set up a hair spray stall just outside the venue you would have made a handsome profit. Or perhaps spiked bracelets and belts may have also pocketed you enough for a six pack of beer.

This is a nostalgic night for many of the punters present tonight trying to relive past experiences from faraway places and long gone times. I had the pleasure of speaking to two such fans that could not contain their enthusiasm over what this meant to them. One had seen UK Subs 30 years ago before he migrated to Australia. The other saw them 15 years ago and duly noted the aging process that had taken a hold of Charlie Harper. Such is the life of a legendary trend setter.

The Black Eyed Peas return to the top of the ARIA Album Chart as David Guetta continues to dominate the ARIA Singles Chart

The Black Eyed Peas blast up the ARIA Album Chart this week as their hit record “The E.N.D.” returns to the top for the third time, coinciding with their massive Australian tour. It reached No.1 on debut in June and again in August, staying in place for a week on both occasions. The last album to have three separate stints at the top of the album chart was Kings Of Leon’s “Only By The Night”. David Guetta’s “Sexy Bitch” (featuring Akon) holds at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart, racking up a massive seven weeks and joining Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and “I Gotta Feeling” from The Black Eyed Peas as the longest running chart-topping singles of 2009.

Interview with The Black Ryder’s Scott Von Ryper

Interview: Bek Grealy
Black Ryder‘Buy the Ticket, take the Ride’ The Black Ryder‘s Scott Von Ryper (SVR) talks with Bek Grealy (BG)
The Black Ryder album ‘Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride’ out on ‘The Anti Machine Machine’ and EMI, November 2009

BG: How’s the live music scene working out for you at the moment? Had any recent gigs?

SVR: No we haven’t actually, we have a show coming up in Melbourne in mid November, and we had an exhibition in Sydney at the Monster Children Gallery, with a pre album listening party and the photos shown were taken from our video clip shoot. It gave the attendees a chance to listen to the sounds before the album is launched.

BG: Did any of the content, or ideas come from the previous band you both worked together in, “The Morning After Girls” to establish The Black Ryder?

SVR: No, I don’t think so, the bands are very different musically, and Aimee and I joined The Morning After Girls a little later on, so they already had a pretty clear direction. Whereas the Black Ryder, we are the creators, we write the music and we record it.

The View (UK) Australian Tour 2009/2010

The View   Marrying the forked tongue wit and guttersnipe humor of The Libertines with the melodic nous of The Buzzcocks and Oasis, The View – one of the latest groups from the UK to be touted as “the next big thing” – are bringing their infectious sounds to Australia for the 2009/2010 festival season.
The Scottish band have been making music since the four members met in school in Dundee, and progressed quickly from gigs at caravan parks and family weddings to the international rock ‘n’ roll stage.
