Woodford Folk Festival 08/09 – Launch

The 23rd Woodford Folk Festival presents a resplendent program of 580 acts and 2600 performers.  Festival Director and futurist, Bill Hauritz says “it’s our most ambitious programme in our 23 year history…”.

The 360acre site is also being lovingly regenerated.

bluejuice – let the fun begin!

After witnessing the energy of bluejuice playing live at the Valley Fiesta 2008, the decision was made to investigate the band a little further. I mean, these guys packed in the crowd, had them up and jumping with a charismatic energy from the first step on stage to the last blistering note! Awesome…

What was found in our investgations:
Between stage jumps, speaker climbs and a full on stage performances there lies an extremely talented, inventive and most of all,  funny group.

  • “Belonging to the church of the big fish”… classic!
  • Jumping out of planes to make the filmclip for “The Reductionist”… classic!

The Waifs Australian Tour Jan-Feb 2009

The Waifs Australian Tour With Special Guests Jez Mead/ Mama Kin

The Waifs

Last year The Waifs were part of the huge Union Of Soul WA tour with the John Butler Trio, this year they return to headline their own series of concerts over the summer. In WA they will be joined by America’s Independent sweetheart, Ani Di Franco and new WA act Mama Kin and for the rest of the country, old friend and fellow independent road warrior, Jez Mead.

The Waifs have been one of West Australia’s most loved and appreciated bands over their 20 year history. Building their fan base the hard way, playing every corner of the country, earning respect of peers and fans alike for their tenacity and drive to do things their own way.

From the back streets of sleepy towns in WA, to an internationally loved, multiple ARIA Award winning multiple platinum selling act, (their latest release Sun Dirt Water now about to go platinum), The Waifs have paved the way for Australian independent artists to be able to forge successful careers outside of the major label rules.

Since they last took to the stage on home soil, The Waifs have been busy touring through Europe and America to support the release of Sun Dirt Water.

Jez Mead will bring his raw, hypnotic folk blues to the stage, a well travelled journeyman on a quest to invite listeners to explore his sonic sensibilities and diverse guitar styles. Sun Dirt Water is in store now through Jarrah Records and MGM Distribution. www.thewaifs.com

The System of a Down front man has gone solo with the multi-layered album Elect the Dead. Dropkick Murphys
BIG DAY OUT is dedicated to providing good times. And to help us do this in 2009, we’ve called on the band dubbed Boston’s answer to the Ramones – the legendary DROPKICK MURPHYS. This loud, raucous and chaotic seven-piece Celtic punk combo hits the stage with one goal: to play music that creates an all-for-one, one-for-all environment where everyone is encouraged to participate, sing along, and have a good time. Sounds good to us! So let the good times roll with DROPKICK MURPHYS at BIG DAY OUT 2009. (ALL SHOWS)

Pinky Beecroft interviews PINKY BEECROFT…
for LifeMusicMedia

PB: So, Pinky, was this your idea, to do this interview?
PB: No. I don’t know whose idea it was. But I think it’s a very good idea, so I’m running with it.

PB: OK. Do you want firstly to talk about your time as the singer of Machine Gun Fellatio?
PB: No. Not if we can avoid it.

PB: Right. Well can you tell me a little bit about your new band, The White Russians?
PB: Yes they’re very good. A 4-piece, drums, bass, guitar and me. It’s very organic.  Kind of rockin’. Very exciting.

PB: You’ve just released your first album, Somethin’ Somewhere Better. How was that?
PB: How was what?

PB: How was that process?
PB:  You mean, how did we record it?

PB: I mean.. yeah. I guess. Um. I mean… what were your influences?
PB: My influences? That’s a very complicated question. I don’t know, gee, I expected this interview to be different.

Paul Kelly

From very early on in his career, Paul Kelly has been recognised as one of the most significant singer/songwriters in the country.

His influence over Australian music and Australian culture is wide and significant – backed up by the fact his new compilation Songs From The South – Volume 2 has gone Gold since its November 2008 release.

As well as issuing an enduring body of work with his own bands, Kelly has written film scores (Lantana and the Cannes 2006 highlight, Jindabyne), and produced albums for and written songs with some of Australia and New Zealand’s finest artists.

Paul Kelly’s Songs From The South Volume 2 was recently released, along with a DVD collection of Paul Kelly videos from 1985 to 2008 and a double CD including Songs From The South Volume’s 1 & 2. You can find these at record stores and digital outlets now.

Since it’s release the positive reviews have been coming through thick and fast.
One such review can be read below, from Noel Mengel of The Courier Mail. More reviews are posted in the ‘Recent Press’ section on Paul Kelly‘s website.

EP: The John Steel Singers – “In Colour”

The John Steel Singers have just released their latest indie styled fuzz pop musical offering in an EP titled “In Colour”.

This EP is a great progression for the band and in working with producer Scott Horscroft, the end result speaks volumes. Maybe it’s their conscious decision to make the rhythms more direct and simplified. Whatever it is, you will be transported into a fantasy, surreal, floating world with a sixties laid back summer love feel.

The opening track, Rainbow Kraut is a clear favourite and after a few listens I found myself humming along and somehow a little uplifted.

The EP is now available through Levity®/Inertia.

“In Colour”
1. Rainbow Kraut
2. Luxembourg
3. Mother
4. Harlequin Maid

In support of the album release, the John Steel Singers are embarking on an Australian Headliner tour thoughout November.   Click here for tour details…

Gabriella Cilmi and The Presets sweep the 2008 ARIA Awards

The winners of the 2008 ARIA Awards, proudly presented by Motorola, have been announced and pop and electronic dance music have ruled the day in the form of multiple winners GABRIELLA CILMI and THE PRESETS. They join an eclectic group of ARIA Award recipients who include THE LIVING END, KASEY CHAMBERS and SHANE NICHOLSON, NICK CAVE and GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU, THE PANICS and BLISS N’ ESO, among others.

In what is an extraordinary success story, vocal powerhouse GABRIELLA CILMI, a pop singer who had yet to emerge on the Australian music landscape this time last year, has taken out an incredible 6 ARIA Awards on the back of her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned, and her breakthrough smash hit single, Sweet About Me. The Melbourne-born, London-based Cilmi has received ARIA Awards in the categories of BEST FEMALE ARTIST, BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – SINGLE (Sweet About Me), BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST – ALBUM (Lessons to be Learned), BEST POP RELEASE (Lessons to be Learned), HIGHEST SELLING SINGLE (Sweet About Me) and the coveted ARIA Award for SINGLE OF THE YEAR for Sweet About Me. With the world at her feet, GABRIELLA CILMI’s ARIA Awards triumph is nothing short of a phenomenal achievement for the Dandenong girl who has just celebrated her 17th birthday.

Electronic duo THE PRESETS has also had a cracking year with the release of their widely acclaimed second album Apocalypso. They fought off stiff competition in the prestigious categories of ALBUM OF THE YEAR and BEST GROUP to take out both for the hugely popular Apocalypso. The album has also seen THE PRESETS receive the pointy trophy in the category of BEST DANCE RELEASE taking their tally to 3 ARIA Awards (plus 2 ARIA Artisan Awards, including Producer of the Year for Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). The self-produced Apocalypso, which spawned the gritty hit single My People, has sealed THE PRESETS as Australia’s premiere electronic act.
