65daysofstatic at The Woolly Mammoth, Brisbane
‘Post-rock’ is a tired term – in fact, so tired it’s lost its meaning since the genre’s noughties heyday. This writer has long discovered that instrumental rock music doesn’t need to come with a ‘post-‘ or ‘math-‘ prefix attached to it in order to sound good; in the end, it either does or it doesn’t. It has now been 15 years since Explosions In The Sky first showed us how delicate instrumental rock can be and before that, Slint and Tortoise did the same for a mix of tricky time signatures and sparse guitar atmospherics.

Live Review : Mogwai at The Tivoli, Brisbane – March 4, 2015

Mogwai

Mick Turner spends 40 minutes creating slow-moving, somnolent guitar figures interspersed with distorted drags of cello bow, while a Jim White sound-a-like softly layers staccato drum patterns underneath. It’s a “solo” mode that could almost be The Dirty Three on benzos, but if so it shows that D3 is much more than the madcap antics of Warren Ellis.

Mogwai has eight studio albums under its belt now. It’s the sort of longevity that adds friction live: inevitably something must give way.

Opeth – ‘Pale Communion’ Australian Tour – May 2015

opethSwedish progressive metal heroes Opeth are set to return to Australia in 2015 in support of their 11th album ‘Pale Communion’. Hailed as one of the most influential progressive metal bands in the world, Opeth have an ever-growing fanatically loyal fan base in Australia and are returning for a headline run after their highly successful ‘Heritage’ tour in 2013.

One factor which makes Opeth’s live shows second to none is that their concerts are always filled with surprises and you never know what their setlist is going to be! Live Review : Soundwave Festival 2015 – Brisbane

By Morgan Van Ewyk
Slash at Soundwave Festival 2015 - Brisbane
Battling the unrelenting humidity was one hundred percent worth the sweaty mess I had become, just to see the amazing talent on show this year at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds. However, a welcome addition for Brisbane and Sydney venues, that would’ve been dearly missed in Melbourne and Adelaide, was the ‘Comfort Zones’ which provided lucky ticket holders an experience of luxurious proportions with clean amenities, massage services, exclusive bar service and deliciously prepared barista coffee. The perfect opportunity to recharge the batteries.

Boris (JPN) – Live Noise Alive – Australian Tour 2015

BORIS

Legendary Japanese noisemakers Boris returns to our shores for the “Live Noise Alive” Australian tour.

19 albums in 19 years. That’s the studio discography of one of the most significant and prolific bands to emerge from Japan’s noise scene. The number gets tricky once you start counting the trio’s punishing live documents or their myriad co-conspirators – the double-LP with drone lords Sunn O))), the numerous collaborations with master sound manipulator Merzbow or the one-offs with the likes of Ian Astbury, Torche and Doomriders – all of which have put Boris at the forefront of the conversation about noise and doom in the last two decades.

Review by Eve Mayzes
Godsmack at The Tivoli, Brisbane
When Godsmack took to the Tivoli stage in Brisbane last night for the very first time in their 17 year career, fans were understandably excited and anything but disappointed. An eclectic audience with ages ranging from 18 to 55, styles from jeans and a t-shirt to full metal punk wear, both men and women turned up for their first opportunity to rock out to the American alternative/metal band live.
