Interview with Cherie Currie

Interview by Eve Mayzes

On Monday I sat down to speak with one of my favourite musicians of all time, and I’m not too proud to admit, I was extremely nervous. While she may refer to herself as “…just a chainsaw carver from the San Fernando Valley…”, the rest of the world know Cherie Currie as the fifteen-year-old singer who revolutionised the music industry and redefined women’s role in rock. As the front woman of the world’s first ever all girl rock band, playing alongside Joan Jett to make music history, Currie’s life sounds like something Hollywood would dream up; and the rock and roll powerhouse isn’t finished redefining music yet.

Watching a legendary artist grapple with a formidable back catalogue can be a frustrating affair for a fan. It can almost be described through a stages of grief process: at first denial – burying the songs begrudgingly down the setlist in the hopes that newer works get due recognition. After that comes the anger – deleting songs from the setlist completely in a vain hope of erasing them from the collective memory. Bargaining and depression swiftly follow – where the artist reinvents or reworks the songs to placate the hordes. Audiences hold out for the last stage of acceptance, where the original brilliance of the songs are embraced and delivered with a straight bat.

Live Review : Simply Red at Bimbadgen Winery, Pokolbin Australia – February 20, 2016

Review by Natasha Wyborn
Simply Red at Bimbadgen Winery, Pokolbin Australia
A return to the valley after a five year hiatus, Simply Red hit the stage with gusto on Saturday night. A perfect venue, weather warm and sunny, concert sold out as you would expect. The Hunter Valley got to continue its love affair with Mick Hucknall and his classy band. Joining the musicians from the side of the stage after a brief instrumental introduction, Hucknall looked happy and at home. Dressed casual but there was nothing unrehearsed about the bands performance. Hitting almost perfect notes from their first song ‘Look at you now’ Hucknall romanced the audience with a very appealing collection of hits. The crowd responded from the onset, “A new flame” signalled a calling to all people to get up and join the party.

Review : Meatstock Festival at Sydney Showgrounds – February 13-14, 2016

Review by Natasha Wyborn
Meatstock Festival at Sydney Showgrounds
Hair, heat and hunger were the flavour of the weekend at the inaugural Meatstock held at Sydney showgrounds on the 13th and 14th of February 2016. Capitalising on the increasing worldwide trend of BBQ’s and the art of grilling, Meatfest incorporated all the best that a carnivore could want, BBQ’s, beards, butchers, barbers, beers and bands. Too put it simple what more could a fella want for his Valentine’s weekend?

Five Finger Death Punch singer Ivan Moody was hospitalized in his hometown of Denver. He is expected to make a full recovery but it is with deep regret that Five Finger Death Punch will be forced to cancel their appearances in Australia, both with Black Sabbath and as headliners in Sydney and in Melbourne.

Ivan and Five Finger Death Punch express their sincere apologies to both their fans and to the fans of Black Sabbath.

Ticket holders for Five Finger Death Punch’s headline shows in Melbourne (April 20 at The Forum) and Sydney (April 22 at Big Top, Luna Park) and will be contacted by the relevant ticketing outlet to advise of the process for obtaining a refund.

In 2015, Five Finger Death Punch crashed into the ARIA Charts at #3 with their sixth album, Got Your Six, giving them their highest Australian chart position ever! Got Your Six is the follow-up to the two global smash hits, 2013’s The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell Volumes 1 and 2 which debuted at #13 and #29 respectively. The album prior, 2011’s American Capitalist debuted at #50, proving FFDP’s fanbase has grown dramatically in Australia over just a few years.

The band’s second single from Got Your Six, Wash It All Away, quickly climbed the Rock radio charts in the U.S. and recently went #1 for two weeks in a row! The striking, live performance video for the song was shot by iconic music video director Wayne Isham (Metallica, Mötley Crüe) and showcases their highly visual stage show and the contagious energy that fuels the thousands of rabid fans in attendance. It’s the perfect example of what you can expect when you watch FFDP live!

The Vegas-based rockers have grown exponentially in a short amount of time, racking up 15 consecutive Top Ten hits, three #1s and five gold albums. With the release of their 2-volumes in 2013, the band frequently released new content outselling the majority of bands in their genre, with more than 1.5 million albums sold over the past two years just in North America alone.

The band’s last visit to our shores was in 2014 as part of the Soundwave Festival, where their trademark stadium anthems garnered new fans and thrilled their faithful.

Now, audiences in Melbourne and Sydney will have yet another chance to take in the full force of Five Finger Death Punch: one of heavy metal’s most uncompromising outfits.
