To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic 1980 album, “Doolittle”, Pixies – Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have embarked on a very special tour. ‘The Doolittle Tour’ – which arrives in Australia in March 2010. Selling out shows left, right and centre all around Australia! This is the first night in Melbourne at Festival Hall and I felt like this monkey has gone to heaven, photographing one of my all time FAV bands. CD Review: Rotting Christ – ‘AEALO’

Review: Ben Hosking

Rotting CHRIST AEALO
Rotting ChristBuy: Rotting Christ at iTunes
Rotting Christ is, for the uninitiated, a very strange beast upon first listen. Credited as being one of the progenitors of the second wave of Black Metal (BM) at the dawn of the 1990s, the band has amassed a sizeable and remarkable body of work spanning some 11 releases.

What sets Rotting Christ apart from their contemporaries is their ability to seamlessly inject their Greek heritage into the music. This is done largely within the accepted construct of the BM rule book and without a hint of cliché or pastiche.

CD Review: The Dillinger Escape Plan – ‘Option Paralysis’

Review: Ben Hosking
Dillinger
The last few years have been pretty turbulent for The Dillinger Escape Plan. While their records and their live performances have always been violent musical explosions of fury, the latter usually quite unpredictable in nature, it did seem at one point that the band ran the risk of becoming victims of their own chaos. As front man Greg Puciato recently put it, the band was engulfed in “a vicious tornado of animosity” that led to the departure of drummer and co-founder Chris Pennie.

As history sits, their last album Ire Works was completed and toured with the help of Gil Sharone of avant garde group Stolen Babies. However, this proved only a temporary solution, with Sharone leaving the group at the end of 2008.

Certainly, Dillinger is not a band known for their stable line-up, with guitarist Ben Weinman the lone original member. Regardless, the group searched for permanent replacement through 2009 – no easy task considering the relentlessly brutal barrage of erratic blast beats that permeate most of their music. What they found was 25-year-old Billy Rymer.

Miami Horror and the Bacardi Express

LMM: When you heard about playing on the Bacardi Express Tour, you thought?
MH: At first I wasn’t too aware of what would be involved. It wasn’t until we had to do some pre-press shots/interviews last year on the train that I realised how great an experience it would be and became very excited. The train is amazing and all the people we have met so far that are involved have been lovely.

LMM: What are you most looking forward to on the Bacardi Express tour?
MH: We’ve all been talking about the jam room and DJ booth. We are hoping to learn some classic songs to jam with the other bands. Hopefully we can jam some Supertramp.

LMM: Absolutely loved your music clip “Sometimes”, where did the inspiration for that come from?
MH: Originally we had a concept similar to a movie called “Logan’s Run”, but we let Moopjaw (Director/producer of “Sometimes”).

Live Review: Devin Townsend @ The Tivoli, Brisbane 12 March 2010

Review by: Hannah Collins
Devin TownsendWhat do you say about a person that seemingly has everything, can do anything, and pleases mostly everyone with his never-ending display of musical prowess? >Devin Townsend is such a man. At almost 40 years of age, his list of achievements both in and outside of the music industry, have never ceased to amaze us. His list of albums and sprouting projects is as long and lustrous as his hair once was, with their both differentiating and intriguing sounds as diverse as Devin’s facial expressions. He was once dubbed the “boy genius” by Steve Vai at only 19 years of age and 20 odd years later, he’s definitely lived up to the hype that precedes him.

In his early days, Devin debuted his original works as the founder, songwriter, guitarist and vocalist for hard hitting, extreme metal act “Strapping young lad” (whose debut album “City” was declared to be; “possibly one of the best metal albums of all time”).

FINALLY!!! The welcome return of Pavement – one of the world’s most iconic acts and one of my all time personal FAV’s!

Having seen them ages ago way way BACK in the rock time machine playing the Prince Of Wales in St Kilda in 1993. Two years later at The Showgrounds, they played the BIG DAY OUT. Then they came back for one last performance in 1998 and they went their separate ways. :(

Live Review: Emilie Autumn @ The Metro, Sydney – 18 March 2010

By: Bek Grealy
Emilie Autumn

Last night, we encountered Emilie Autumn and her Bloody Crumpets at The Metro theatre, Sydney.

Emilie Autumn’s performance was a two-hour theatrical extravaganza, a conceptual wing-ding that has only a tangential relationship to the normal procedures of rock ‘n’ roll. I recall Emilie’s My Space page a couple of years ago, which included portions of a predictable rock line of attack, and depicting evidence of this in the future events, with the maintenance of two support bands. It was, basically dubbed, a gig.

But now, it’s a show, and the difference is distinct. Emilie Autumn has taken a decisive step towards theatre. No support bands tonight – just an elaborately dressed stage, some equally elaborately dressed Bloody Crumpets, and Emilie Autumn the queen of the performance.

CD Review: Bec Plath “Unrequited”

Review by: Lauren Sherritt
Bec PlathBec Plath’s debut solo EP Unrequited is the kind that sells live gig tickets. To put it plainly, this young woman has guts, a trait she showcases most beautifully on the record. With an honesty so often lacking in modern day song writing, Plath bravely explores to a remarkable extent the story of her life and herself throughout Unrequited, and compels the listener to come along for the journey.

The Optimen – to release 2nd album “The Out Of Money Experience”

Brisbane’s The Optimen are proud to announce the impending release of their sophomore outing The Out Of Money Experience – out nationally on Saturday April 10 through Red Tape Entertainment/Inertia.

It’s been a long wait for fans for The Optimen’s follow up to their 2005 Boomtown, the band taking time to work on their label Red Tape as well as other projects. Receiving strong triple J play on the hip hop show in particular and community radio nationwide, first single Fire Fighters heralded their return late last year, and finally they’ve arrived with The Out Of Money Experience due in April.

Fresh swell on the horizon set to BREAK!

Related: Our CD Review: The Break – ‘Cylinders’ Single

The_Break - Photo_by_tony_mott   Australia’s most exciting new surf rock outfit THE BREAK are primed to deliver a power packed set when the band perform tracks from their debut album ‘Church Of The Open Sky’ live at a venue near you during April and May. Audiences will be treated to a mind blowing experience as classic surf meets spy-fi psychedelia when the three core members of Midnight Oil; drummer Rob Hirst, guitarists Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey, join with bass player Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes to present a whole new and contemporary approach to the surf music genre.

THE BREAK’S first official tour kicks off on the Easter weekend with festival appearances at Victoria’s hip and happenin’ Boogie Fest and the esteemed Blues Fest in Byron Bay. On Good Friday the band will take their unique surf sounds to The Westernport Hotel on Victoria’s Phillip Island – an area renowned for its pumping surf – which is particularly apt as many of the tracks from the album are named after hot surf breaks.

Following a stupendous introduction to Sydney fans in February, the band will return to The Annandale Hotel on April 11th to officially introduce their new album ‘Church Of The Open Sky’ released on April 16th on the independent Bombora label through MGM. On April 20th they’ll turn on the local Newcastle fans with a special show at Lizotte’s at Lambton. From there THE BREAK team up with their mighty mates The Hoodoo Gurus as special guests for select shows on The Gurus ‘Purity Of Essence’ tour. Being old mates expect the unexpected as the two bands hit the road for the first time ever!
