The Bloodpoets, indie rockers hailing from Brisbane have continued their infectious streak with their new EP ‘Wings’.
Wings teases the listener with 6 tracks, each as unique as the other, broadcasting the diversity of the Bloodpoets style. It is great to hear real instruments amongst so much of the heavily synthesised and edited muck that is disguising itself as music nowadays. The Bloodpoets aren’t afraid to showcase their talents and diverse tastes; from trombones, trumpets and saxophones on “Sunny Day”-an amazing jazzy number, to violin and the melodic combination of male and female vocals with band’s Tom Murphy and Bec Plath complimenting one another on “She Feels It” –the definite favourite for me.

The Bloodpoets “Wings” Tour – March/April 2011 [Tour News]

  Tom Murphy began The Bloodpoets in Germany, after writing songs and busking on the streets of Erlangen. Within weeks, Fire In Erlangen had been written and recorded, set to be released to the German market. Back in Australia, The Bloodpoets released their debut EP in 2006 to rave reviews..

The success of Fire In Erlangen saw The Bloodpoets become a staple to the Brisbane music scene, performing on Festival stages and enduring heavy touring in Australia to great acclaim.

Fast forward 3 years and Borderline is released as a single from their debut album Polarity. Immediate responses came from Triple J Unearthed seeing them being featured artists 2 months consecutively, and receiving a large circulation of play over the summer of 2008/2009.

Bec Plath “At The End of the Night” – Single Review

  This soft single is the latest release from Brisbane vocalist Bec Plath, best known for her vocals with local band The Bloodpoets. At The End of The Night follows Plath’s 2009 debut EP Unrequited, and gives a taste of what we can expect from her next EP.

The single starts with a smooth yet strong piano intro with guitar kicking in shortly before Plath’s melodious vocals. During the chorus, Plath’s vocals take on a slightly sharper edge, building in intensity before softening again for the verses. The piano remains a subtle but constant presence throughout the song, which flows effortlessly through key

changes which add to the track’s originality. Plath’s lyrics are introspective comments about living in a stressful world to which many people would be able to relate. Her vocals are imbued with both honesty and a sense of heart that makes listening seem like a deeply personal act. The music meanders for a while, almost seeming a bit lengthy, before coming to a powerful crescendo towards the end of the track, and then fading out softly. At The End of the Night is a slow-burner with a lot of emotion, and worthy addition to any compilation.

The Bloodpoets   When playing poker, it’s not enough to be good at the game. To be the winner takes all, you need to maintain a certain level of unpredictability too. If The Bloodpoets music is anything to go by, these guys would make excellent poker players. The second single (and first track) from Polarity, ‘Just in Time’, bursts forwards with cinematic drama and a dark urgency led by Jake Parker’s bass. The brooding opening of this song then flows into a pop orientated chorus and harmonies, a completely unexpected development on first listen. But as the album thrusts forward, it becomes apparent that blending deep rock guitars with lighter sing along lyrics is what The Bloodpoets do.
