While the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is currently celebrating a stellar year, Brisbane’s not about to miss all the fun, with QPAC presenting some equally smokin’ cabaret on this side of the ash cloud. 12 Acts of Cabaret features a delicious mix of artists, with international acts, Aussie stars and some of the hottest new names in cabaret.

Saturday night will see the enchanting Mitchell Butel grace the stage at the Cremorne in his show Killing Time. With an extensive career in theatre, film and television, touring in grand scale productions like Dusty, the provocative puppetry of Avenue Q, and performing for Opera Australia, Butel is about to get intimate, as only cabaret can.

Noah And The Whale – “Last Night On Earth” – Album Review

Review: Victoria Nugent

The latest offering from Brit indie folk rockers Noah And The Whale reached my ears at just the right time, as this collection of laidback yet catchy tunes is capable of bringing sunshine to chilly winter days. Last Night On Earth is the band’s third album, and represents a distinct departure from their previous folky style to much more radio friendly pop territory. Although this may upset some of the band’s older fans, the album itself is thoroughly enjoyable and almost ridiculously catchy. Every song tells a story, with Charlie Fink’s husky vocals guiding the listener through a set of anecdotes representing a series of relatable experiences. The cheery tunes have a dark edge which saves them from being bubblegum pop

and plants them firmly in the category of music that quickly grows on you. Fink’s vocals are competent, if not remarkable, while the instruments provide a firm base for a string of intensely likeable songs. Song after song, I found myself quickly singing along and becoming more and more fond of the band’s cheery rock repertoire.

Double Pass Giveaway: Forbidden Zone / Andy Warhol’s Bad – movie double (22 June 2011) [Movie]

Forbidden Zone / Andy Warhol’s Bad @ Tribal Theatre, Brisbane – Double Pass Giveaway!
See below for details

WEIRD WEDNESDAYS – Wednesday 22 June 2011
A monthly off-beat movie night @ www.tribaltheatre.com.au

A double feature of the rare cult movies:

  Forbidden Zone (1982) (R18+) – 6.30pm

In an absurd, cartoony world, Frenchy slips through a mysterious door in the basement of her house which leads to the Sixth Dimension. The jealous Queen Doris takes Frenchy prisoner and it is up to her family to rescue her.

Director Richard Elfman, founder of the New Wave band Oingo Boingo, created the film to capture the essence of the band’s live performances on film. This marked his brother Danny Elfman’s first musical score… he would go on to be one of Hollywood’s most popular composers and long-time Tim Burton collaborator. See him perform Minnie the Moocher as The Devil! Newly restored and ‘colourised’, fans can now enjoy the film on a whole new level. An experience guaranteed you will never forget!

Marillion – Live From Cadogan Hall – Album Review

Review: Billy Geary

Marillion at iTunes   Live albums are always tricky things to make, even trickier when you elect to strip your songs right back to the barest of forms. They serve as the true test of an artist, because if an artist cannot replicate their music well in a live setting, it is very hard for them to be a successful act. Thus, upon hearing that Britain’s daggiest band had gone and recorded an all-acoustic show, it was met with more than a small amount of trepidation. However, Live From Cadogan Hall sees Marillion in perfect touch. Live, the band is almost unfaultable, with the five-piece recreating their music in acoustic form brilliantly.

Parklife 2011 – Festival Info

Parklife is a labour of love that started as a very small party in a park in March of 2000. We did it because we wanted to share the music we love with other like-minded people in a beautiful outdoor setting close to the centre of the city… and although it’s grown just a bit over the last 11 years the idea is exactly the same: Music we love, smiling people and a great party amongst grass, trees and (hopefully!) brilliant blue skies, right in the heart of the city.

Each year we do our very best to bring you the freshest bunch of artists in styles of music we think matter the most right now, constantly refine and improve everything about the show and give you a high quality Parklife experience.

We want Parklife to be a brilliant, glowing day you and your best friends look back on fondly for the rest of your lives!

The 2011 bill includes a bunch of talented solo female artists with the likes of Lykke Li, Santigold, Katy B, Beth Ditto and Kimbra all set to feature as part of the national run of dates.

Coaster 2011 Festival – September 2011 | Festival Info

Some people give linen and silk on their fourth anniversary, others give fruit and flowers, here at Coaster we are presenting you with a gift basket full of the best local talent, picked fresh from musical trees around the country. We are taking a leaf out of the sustainable movement handbook and shopping locally.

We have hand picked some of the best live performers from as far flung as Western Australia, with festival favourites John Butler Trio, Jebediah, Drapht and Tim and Jean, across to Melbourne to grab Little Red, a quick stop off in rural VIC to add a dash of Gold Fields, through Sydney for a sprinkling of The Potbelleez, Bag Raiders, Tonite Only, and Andy Bull, reaching up to Brisbane to harvest QLD’s next big things Ball Park Music, finishing off with a smattering of more amazing acts to make on delicious musical feast.

Central Coast hero’s Something With Numbers hit the stage to play their first show in two years and only show for 2011, with fellow Coast locals, One Dollar Short coming out of hibernation, after calling an indefiniate hiatus back in 2005. These two things alone are turning Coaster 2011 into a welcome home party of epic proportions.

After an unforgettable debut last year, Tomorrow Land returns with a collection of talent such as Ajax, sexy DJ’ing minx Nina Las Vegas, Tom Piper, Naysayer and Gilsun, Wolfpack, Purple Sneakers DJ’s and more to ensure lots of calories are burnt on the dance floor.
