Yeo & The Fresh Goods, Tin Can Radio, Hunz @ Club 299, 19.09.2009

The music played through 299’s PA is positively deafening on all of the venue’s three levels, while the live sound is only marginally subtler – an obstacle not even helped by my trusty earplugs – however the punishing decibels do little to detract me and fellow music lovers from appreciating tonight’s local talent trifecta. Having recently shared his magic with the Big Sound showcase attendees, raved-about Brissie moodytronica maestro Hunz leads his powerhouse rhythm section (featuring drums prodigy Richie Young) into another riveting performance. A passionate frontman as well as a ridiculously talented singer, songwriter and sonic architect, the erstwhile Hans Van Vliet is a familiar welcome sight as he attacks both his mic and modified synth, every syllable, note and move soaked with emotion and sheer intensity. Several choice tracks from acclaimed albums When Victims Fight and this year’s marvellous Thoughts That Move get an airing, Long Road, Soon, Soon and You Said Hello all packing wistful keyboard arrangements and humungous hooks. During the second half of the show, a laptop glitch prompts the digi-soul man to skip a song from the setlist, apologise to the crowd and bow out with another spirited vocal/musical display. My post-gig recommendation to the uninitiated? If you haven’t seen Hunz yet, by all means do it – you’ll be blown away.

David Guetta reclaims top spot on the ARIA Singles Chart, Muse makes chart-topping debut on the ARIA Album Chart
“Sexy Bitch” from David Guetta (featuring Akon) reclaims number one on the ARIA Singles Chart this week, chalking up an impressive four weeks at the top and pushing Guy Sebastian‘s “Like It Like That” into second position. It’s the third song to return to the top of the singles chart this year, following Flo Rida‘s “Right Round” and Taylor Swift‘s “Love Story” which swapped positions several times in March/April. Muse makes a smashing entrance into the ARIA Album Chart, scoring a No.1 debut and their second chart-topping album with “The Resistance”. Their first was “Black Holes And Revelations”, which spent a week at the top in July 2006.

Just in time for their 10-year anniversary, MONO return with their fifth studio album, the absolutely massive Hymn To The Immortal Wind.
After touring almost non-stop for five years, the band hibernated for over a year to focus solely on writing Hymn. The result is their most thoughtful and eclectic album to date. Written and arranged with a hopeful, romantic narrative in mind, the songs string together like chapters in an epic love story. The music is naturally majestic, with MONO’s trademark wall of noise crashing beautifully against the largest chamber orchestra the band has ever enlisted. TIM FINN – Eddie Rayner To Join Tim Finn On Tour
In what will make for an electrifying performance, another dimension has been added to the recently announced Tim Finn National Anthology Tour with the news that former Split Enz and Crowded House keyboardist/composer/musician Eddie Rayner will join Tim on tour.
The unspoken onstage chemistry with Eddie Rayner will bring another element to the already red hot band. Eddie was the inspiration behind the Enzso project in the late 90s and the shows will feature hit songs from Split Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers as well as Tim’s solo songs and promise to be magic.

Once upon a time, Death Metal bands that toured this great country we call Australia was rarer than rocking horse shit. However, over the past four or so years, there have been more of these groups hit our shores than illegal boat people. It was that time once again for Metal Heads to hold onto their faces, as the legendary Cannibal Corpse was in town to rip it off.
Apologies go out to the local lads from Brazen Bull and Defamer for missing their set, as other commitments caused me to arrive that extra bit late.

A punk gathering with more ink than I’ve ever seen in one place gravitated to Brisbanes Hi Fi on Thurs 9th for what will soon become, a show of constant intrigue.
Entering the venue and approaching main viewing area, I’m tuned in to the sight of a rather tall, masked clown making funnies on the stage. Standing alone, in front of the red and gold, fanned Bronx titled backdrop, it feels somewhat like a circus. Deep red lighting accentuates the atmosphere, as the “clown” begins to chant and stir the audience. Statements like “get those tequila shots into you guys!” come ringing from right of stage.

It was New Zealand night at the Hi-Fi Brisbane last Friday, and if the accents didn’t give it away then the multitude of girls walking around screaming out for their countrymen did. Irrespective of how bad (and hilarious) the Flight of the Conchords make us look though, there’s no shortage of amazing New Zealander entertainers out there and Shapeshifter are undoubtedly some of the finest. Shapeshifter has earned no small degree of fame after the release of three albums, and you get the sense listening to them that they’ve come close to perfecting an electronically heavy but still organic sound. Unmistakably a drum and bass act on their studio albums, you more often than not see them referred to as a ‘dance’ act in live reviews. This may seem like an oversimplification of their sound but in reality the rising and falling of the beats is energetic and soulful – and doesn’t come across as straight drum and bass at all.

Australian artists continue their reign on the ARIA Singles & Album Charts
In another huge week for Australian artists, Guy Sebastian spends a further week on top of the ARIA Singles Chart with “Like It Like That”. It becomes his second-longest running No.1 single after his initial career hit “Angels Brought Me Here”, which spent three weeks straight at the top in December 2003. Jimmy Barnes continues his domination of the ARIA Album Chart, achieving a second week at No.1 with “The Rhythm And The Blues” and notching up a solo tally of thirty-one weeks at the top of the chart. This is equal to Delta Goodrem‘s total, with John Farnham the only Australian artist ahead, accumulating a massive forty-seven weeks on top of the chart over eight albums.

Chugg Entertainment and EMI Music are excited to announce that Bob Evans and his full band will open for Keith Urban on his “Escape Together World Tour” which begins in Melbourne on Saturday December 12 and will be the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.
The two-hour, high-energy concert event starts in Melbourne at Rod Laver Arena on Saturday 12 December, before travelling north to Wollongong’s WIN Entertainment Centre on Monday 14 December. Next on the itinerary is Sydney’s Entertainment Centre on Wednesday 16 December before finishing up in Keith’s home state, performing at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Friday 18 December.
