The Kill Devil Hills – ‘Another Joke, Another Ransom’ Tour

The Kill Devil Hills kick off their ‘Another Joke, Another Ransom’ tour next Friday 5 February 2010 at The Zoo in Brisbane, supported by Mexico City and The Blackwater Fever.
Following the release of their critically acclaimed third album, Man, You Should Explode, the band will also play Saturday 6 February at Bon Amici in Toowoomba, and Sunday 7 February at the Great Northern in Byron Bay. |
Having spent the past few months touring non-stop around the country, The Kill Devil Hills’ live show is at its electrifying best. They’ll also be unleashing their blood, sweat, and tears on venues in Coffs Harbour, Sydney, Wollongong, the Blue Mountains, Hobart, Launceston and Melbourne throughout February.

The Tivoli is filling with fans and the ambient strains of lounge jazz. Bodies crowd the railings upstairs first, spectators safe behind the iron and wood. As more people push through the doors the floor packs out, the main crowds are drawn towards the stage, towards the backdrop of snake and other eyes, wings and amorphous canine face shapes, lit by blasts of ketchup red from above. Excited chatter now drowns out the background melodies, until The Mars Volta hit the stage. |

Tour: Hockey headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne 2010
Dance punk/indie rockers Hockey, hailing from Portland, Oregon will make their way to Australia for the first time to perform at the Laneway Festivals and headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne.
Hockey comprises singer Benjamin Grubin, guitarist Brian White, bassist Jeremy Reynolds, drummer Anthony Stassi and touring keyboardist Ryan Dolliver, and have been compared in their sound to bands such as The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem.

Maryland’s favourite sons Clutch have continued to foster a strong relationship with their Australian fans, with three releases hitting stores in 2009, following the launch of their own record label Weather Maker, locally. Full Fathom Five, a live DVD & CD pack featuring the full Metro Theatre set filmed in Sydney on their last Australian tour, a studio LP from the bands instrumental side project, The Bakerton Group, and most recently Clutch’s 9th studio album Strange Cousins From The West. It’s been a big year for the band in stores here in Oz. |

Karnivool, Regular John, Coerce @ The Tivoli, 25.11.2009 By Denis Semchenko Having successfully escaped my Pearl Jam fan-invaded neighbourhood, by the time I get to The Tivoli openers Coerce have already finished. From a friend’s account, the UK combo played a solid set of angular prog-rock with At The Drive-In leanings, which would have by all means made for a decent listening experience for this writer. For the time being, though, Sydneysiders Regular John will do – and they do it with gusto, cranking up heady garage-rock riffs and pentatonic licks and flailing the ‘70s long hair. Some post-2002 Grinspoon echoes are heard throughout but the quartet’s overall feel is that of the ballsy vintage rock & roll, somewhat incongruous given the headliner’s complex, emotion-drenched oeuvre, yet fun nonetheless. |

This rather cold Wednesday night presented itself as an interesting proposition from the start. It would have been safe to assume that if you had decided to set up a hair spray stall just outside the venue you would have made a handsome profit. Or perhaps spiked bracelets and belts may have also pocketed you enough for a six pack of beer.
This is a nostalgic night for many of the punters present tonight trying to relive past experiences from faraway places and long gone times. I had the pleasure of speaking to two such fans that could not contain their enthusiasm over what this meant to them. One had seen UK Subs 30 years ago before he migrated to Australia. The other saw them 15 years ago and duly noted the aging process that had taken a hold of Charlie Harper. Such is the life of a legendary trend setter.

Run through their history, of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume growing up in the rural New Zealand town of Feilding and finding their feet as musicians. Reflect on their breakthrough 2004 debut Dreams and its beautifully crafted follow-up, 2006’s Real Life, selling platinum and double platinum. Look at their six ARIA Award nominations, two NZ Music Awards, Channel [V] and MTV gongs, and the high esteem in which music fans and peers hold them. Underground pop battlers The Lucksmiths are serving notice. Yes, sadly, it’s true. Times change, people move on, and like many of their songs — redolent with ordinary minutiae — The Lucksmiths have finally been conquered by everyday life.
Formed in 1993, and having since transcended musical fashions and movements, the Melbourne band have long been seen as refreshingly unique amongst the musical landscape; their live shows, often hilariously haphazard, continue to captivate audiences at home and around the world,while they remain fond favourites of many who came across the band in their formative years. |
