Kora @ The Zoo, Brisbane – 27 January 2011 [Photos & Review]

Photos and Words by Jose Eduardo Cruz

What an amazing gig from this New Zealand band consisting of four brothers. Certain people are blessed with different talents and islander people are blessed with beautiful voices and musical skills. The punters were largely expat Kiwis who were eager to let anyone who would listen know that these guys were it.

There were constant instrument changes amongst the members of the band and various vocal leads. Overall, an amazing gig which should place them on better ground for their next Australian tour.

EVIL EDDIE ‘East Coast’ Tour – February | March 2011 [Tour News]

After blitzing, wooing and sometimes insulting the crowds at the Peats Ridge and Woodford Festivals at the end of 2010 in what was his live solo debut, ex-Butterfingers front man Evil Eddie is set to hit the road again in February and March for a run of East Coast shows.

On the tour, which includes shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, Evil brings with him an all star Brisbane based backing band which boasts members of Butterfingers, Laneous and the Family Yah and Spitfireliar.

Since the release of his first single ‘Queensland’ at the end of last year, Eddie has been causing quite a stir around the country.

Kate Nash (UK) Australian Tour – February 2011 [Tour News]

The young Miss Nash has transformed into a powerful and enigmatic pop musician.

The new album My Best Friend Is You, perfectly demonstrates this story. The album naturally progresses through grungy pop, steering you blissfully with catchy hooks and humourous lyrical narrative. The help of 60s sounds of full brass pipes and twanging surf guitar show her diversity and ability to make poignant yet playful music. Often crude and clearly unafraid of a little bloodsport, Nash splashes playfully on the shores of innocence and idiosyncrasy. This juxtaposition is her most powerful weapon and is quintessentially, Nash.

One thing is certain, the coming performances at Playground Weekender and on Australias east coast are going to be unmissable. A clever musician with a compelling persona – shes not afraid to show them how its done. Get your tickets through the venue or through the Playground Weekender website.

SLASH with COHEED AND CAMBRIA and TAKING DAWN – Sidewave announced!

Slash   Few artists in rock history can carry off the single moniker, and carry it with gravitas.
SLASH is one of that rare breed.

Since emerging with Guns N’ Roses, SLASH has been one of the world’s most sought after guitarists. Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quentin Tarantino and so many other fellow icons have sought his services in order to make the good sound great.

Critics and fans alike still debate the greatest rock riff of all time with “Sweet Child O’ Mine” consistently taking top honors. Time Magazine placed SLASH second only to Jimi Hendrix amongst the greatest guitarists of all time.

HIGH ON FIRE with TRASH TALK and KYLESA – Sidewave announced!

Underground thrash-sludge messiahs HIGH ON FIRE have set a new standard in doom metal.

Boasting apocalyptic riffage and gravel-gargling vocals, their latest opus ‘Snakes for the Devil’ solidifies HIGH ON FIRE as one of the most important bands in metal today, Absolute Punk affirming, “…the band has burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype.” Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE’S outrageously loud and absolutely punishing live show is descending upon Brisbane and Melbourne this March.

With stage displays firmly rooted in chaos, an arsenal of releases to back it up, and fervent touring, TRASH TALK has continually astonished loyal fans and newcomers alike. Pushing onward and upward since inception, TRASH TALK has defined, refined, and re-defined themselves as a punk/hardcore juggernaut.

Intelligent and complicated songwriting structures drawing from an array of dizzying musical sources have set KYLESA apart from their sludge-metal peers. Rounded off with an onslaught of psychedelic undercurrents; and jarring, triple-team vocal interaction, KYLESA has truly earned a well-deserved place as the “dark psych-metal titans” (Spin) of the stoner metal community.

HIGH ON FIRE, TRASH TALK and KYLESA will unleash the doom on their Sidewaves this March.

The sumptuous second taste of Dead Letter Chorus’ upcoming album, Run, Wild has become (if you excuse the pun) a runaway success. The song’s existential yet hopeful sentiments have clearly tapped into the zeitgeist and in to the hearts of the general public thanks to a lot of love from national broadcaster Triple J as well as a slew of community radio.

Run, Wild was decidedly a highlight of the band’s live set on their recent East Coast tour alongside the considerable talents of Seagull and Dan Parsons. And it wasn’t just in live land that the track was heaped with kudos; its accompanying film clip was recently named Indie Clip of the Week by national institution, and savior of late night television watchers everywhere, Rage.

“Weird Al” Yankovic Australian Tour 2011 [Tour News]

“Weird Al” Yankovic, the undisputed king of pop culture parody, has sold more comedy recordings than any other artist in history. In a career spanning nearly three decades, he has amassed 30 Gold and Platinum albums, 7 Gold and Platinum-certified home videos and 3 Grammy Awards (with 11 nominations).

The singer-songwriter’s first real brush with fame came in 1979 when he recorded “My Bologna” (a spoof of The Knack’s “My Sharona”) in the bathroom across the hall from his college campus radio station where he had a weekly DJ shift. A devoteé of musical satirists Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman and Stan Freberg, Yankovic’s budding career took off when the song became a sensation on the nationally syndicated “Dr. Demento Show.” Just a few years later, Al landed his first recording contract and has since created an extraordinary legacy of music and ground-breaking videos, including hits like “Eat It,” “Like A Surgeon” and “Amish Paradise.”
