Tour News: Devin Townsend Project Australian Tour – March 2010
![]() |
Some 15 years ago, Steve Vai dubbed the then 19 year old Devin Townsend “The Boy Genius”. Vai was being most sincere, rather than sarcastic.
Since then Townsend has amazed, beguiled and occasionally baffled all comers in numerous incarnations spanning the extreme noise metal of Strapping Young Lad to the intricate melodies of Ocean Machine; Devin has had his hand in almost every genre of music, from industrial metal to progressive rock to ambient sounds. All of these projects had one thing in common: GENIUS. From the perfection of the wall of noise that was ‘Strapping Young Lad’ to the brilliance of ‘The Devin Townsend Band’, Hevy Devy has embarked on his most ambitious project yet; |

Live Review: Mono, laura, Del Toro @ The Hi-Fi, Brisbane 6 December 2009

Concluding my adventures in Hi-Fi (Brisbane) (to paraphrase an R.E.M. album title) for the week – Sia on Thursday, Jarvis Cocker on Saturday – is a Sunday night event with a bill that looks like post-rock lover’s wet dream: Japanese celestial noise giants Mono, sublime Melbournians laura and Brisbane’s own math soundscapists Del Toro. In contrast with the packed earlier shows, there’s room to move and the alcohol-fuelled rowdiness, frequent at “name” gigs, is absent: everyone’s here to listen to MUSIC. |

Live Review | Dream Theater @ Brisbane Convention Centre 3 December 2009 with Pain of Salvation
By: Hannah Collins
With the Majesty symbol out in force, The Brisbane convention centre slowly begins to fill as fans old and new await a set of mammoth proportions.
The venue is still relatively empty as support act, Pain Of Salvation (Sweden) begin to play. The 5 piece, consisting of Daniel Gildenlöw (vocals/guitar), John Hallgren (Backing vocals/Guitar) , Fredrik Hermansson (synthesizers) Léo Margarit (drums/backing vocals) and Per Schelander (bass guitar/backing vocals) announce themselves as “A Swedish band, with a French drummer… somewhat like Meshugga, but with notes”… an interesting analogy.
Their sound comprises of powerfully accentuated guitar work, progressive yet full, with a large and differential vocal range, being contributed to by the excessive use of backing vocals from three different members of the band. Although submitting to be a backup vocalist only, Hallgren seems to have a larger more substantial vocal sound, not only contributing to backup but taking whole sections of songs to claim as his own with his husky larger than life undertones.

Live Review: Karnivool, Regular John, Coerce @ The Tivoli, 25 November 2009

Karnivool, Regular John, Coerce @ The Tivoli, 25.11.2009 By Denis Semchenko Having successfully escaped my Pearl Jam fan-invaded neighbourhood, by the time I get to The Tivoli openers Coerce have already finished. From a friend’s account, the UK combo played a solid set of angular prog-rock with At The Drive-In leanings, which would have by all means made for a decent listening experience for this writer. For the time being, though, Sydneysiders Regular John will do – and they do it with gusto, cranking up heady garage-rock riffs and pentatonic licks and flailing the ‘70s long hair. Some post-2002 Grinspoon echoes are heard throughout but the quartet’s overall feel is that of the ballsy vintage rock & roll, somewhat incongruous given the headliner’s complex, emotion-drenched oeuvre, yet fun nonetheless. |

Echo & The Bunnymen Laneway Festival Sideshows
One of Liverpool’s most mysterious and talented exports, Echo & The Bunnymen will return to Australian shores in early 2010. Following the release of their tenth studio album THE FOUNTAIN, original members Ian McCulloch (aka Mac) and Will Sergeant will bring their enigmatic live show to the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival in Australia along with sideshows in both Sydney and Melbourne.
The tour begins in Sydney with a show at the Enmore Theatre on Wednesday 27th January before heading to Brisbane for their headlining appearance at the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival on Friday 29th January.
The band will then head south to Melbourne for their Laneway appearance on Saturday 30th January, followed by Sydney Laneway on Sunday 31st January. Heading back to Melbourne on Thursday 4th February, Echo & The Bunnymen will then take on the Palais Theatre before heading west for Adelaide’s Laneway on Friday 5th February. The tour then concludes in Perth at their final Laneway performance on Saturday 6th February.
The Bunnymen formed when Ian McCulloch met guitarist Will Sergeant in the summer of 1978 in Liverpool when the pair began recording demos with a drum machine that the duo called “Echo.” Thirty years on with a career steeped in cult success as avant-garde icons of the 1980s, Echo & The Bunnymen have amassed bountiful treasures during their many travels.
Last year, Echo & The Bunnymen took their ‘Ocean Rain’ show on the road – a tribute and retrospective of their celebrated 1984 release. The much lauded return to the stage saw sold out shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall, New York’s Radio City Music Hall and the Liverpool Echo Arena – all of which were also met with huge critical acclaim. Combining post-punk angst with the sort of lavish arrangements made famous by the Liverpool lads, a band rejuvenated, Echo & The Bunnymen also received enraptured recognition from critics and fans alike for their festival appearances at the Camden Crawl and Glastonbury.
Becoming cult sensations in the early 1980s, with classic albums including ‘Crocodiles’ (1980), ‘Heaven Up Here’ (1981) and enduring masterpiece ‘Ocean Rain’ (1984), Echo & the Bunnymen forged a distinct sound amongst their post-punk contemporaries (Joy Division, The Cure) grounded in swirling synths, gloomy pop and inspired psychedelia. Echo & The Bunnymen have until now had a whopping nine studio albums under their belt, with 2009’s ‘The Fountain’ being their tenth!
Ahead of their highly anticipated Australian tour in 2010, post-punk icons Echo & the Bunnymen present their brand new album, ‘The Fountain’ – this 5th December on My World Records through Inertia. A massive return to form for the U.K legends, ‘The Fountain’ is a superbly feisty album of pulsating, uplifting rock anthems.
The album boasts a widescreen, crystalline sound, which provides a big, solid undertow beneath Mac’s lyrics. “I’m just a better writer and better singer these days,” he says, “My voice has got more… honest, which fits these songs. This album is about something, rather than just sounding like it’s about something. It’s about having lived life, but still feeling like a kid. I’m a not traditional songwriter. What I do at my best is poetry.”
Echo & The Bunnymen are ready to bring Australian audiences their exciting new material, which Mac is already proudly calling “the best thing we’ve done since Ocean Rain…”
Get ready for the invocation of their big sound, goth-romantic poetry and strummed steel strings as they reclaim their legacy and reposition themselves on the rock continuum. This is one show not to be missed.

Live Review: Cloud Control and Leader Cheetah at the Annandale Hotel, Sydney 21 November 2009
By Natalie Salvo
The Sydney music scene has received a number of heavy blows with the closure of the Hopetoun Hotel; Purple Sneakers vacating the Abercrombie; and talk of legal quibbles between the Annandale Hotel, local council and residents. Sure, a lot of people have shown their support, but its not much help without actual audience numbers. Hang your heads in shame, Sydney, because the Annandale Hotel was only half-full for Cloud Control and Leader Cheetah’s all-ages matinee show on Saturday. What you missed was two up-and-coming bands putting on a really enjoyable afternoon of entertainment that was worth far more than virtual signatures in the sky.

Live Review + Photos | Kate Miller-Heidke @ Enmore Theatre, Sydney 20 Nov 2009
Review: Patrick Harrison
The mosh pit at the Enmore theatre was packed out from wall to wall before the support acts – had even left the stage, and the seats quickly filled up. As soon as Kate Miller-Heidke hit the stage, the excited hubbub exploded into a minute’s solid applause. She lived up to her usual image – with freshly dyed hair and a dress made out of purple frills and silver tinsel. And, as soon as she started playing, everyone in the house knew they were in for something special. The whole crowd fell dead silent to hear her open with “Our Song”, a honest and emotional performance that Kate starts over her partner Kier Nuttal’s guitar before the rest of the band comes in.
