Working with Melbourne indie producers Nick Huggins (Kid Sam, Whitley) & Greg Arnold, the band have ventured into new territories whilst retaining their organic hobo pop aesthetic, uncovering a dark and overwhelming melodic classic. ‘One Long Week’ was Mixed in Nashville by American indie legend Brad Jones (Bob Evans, Josh Rouse) who mixed SGV’s debut album. |

News: The Medics ‘This Boat We Call Love’ East Coast Tour 2010
After quickly garnering the reputation as one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from Queensland’s ever-growing pool of the freakishly talented, The Medics are proud to announce the release of their second EP This Boat We Call Love and will celebrate with a series of East Coast launch shows with Melbourne’s Blackchords.
Like many a promising band, the stage is where The Medics truly shine. With their well-earned stripes in place after winning support slots for the likes of Something With Numbers, The Panics, The Grates, Faker, Blue King Brown and Scribe, the group of tight-knit friends have not only gained acclaim in their hometown of Cairns, far north Queensland, but are also pricking ears and turning the heads of the nation with their epic live show. Brimming with emotive songwriting, stunning musicianship and intense live performances, it won’t be long before the music lovers of Australia will be clambering to see the spectacle for themselves.
Released through Brisbane label Starving Kids, This Boat We Call Love was produced by Mark Myers from The Middle East and features five performances that walk the spectrum of rock – from the delicate and ambient to the jagged and intense.
Joining The Medics on the bulk of shows for their East Coast tour will be Melbourne’s Blackchords. After releasing their debut self-titled album in 2009 to many a glowing review, the band are now back in the country after a string of successful dates in the UK and France in the later part of the year. All Tomorrow’s Parties will return to Kutsher’s Country Club, Monticello for the third ATP New York festival over Labor Day weekend, running from Friday 3rd September – Sunday 5th September. We are very excited to announce that legendary film-maker Jim Jarmusch, well known for his fantastic collaborations and documentaries with musicians will be the guest curator on Sunday 5th.
Born in Akron, Ohio, Jim Jarmusch lives and works in New York. His films include Permanent Vacation (1980), Stranger than Paradise (1984), Down by Law (1986), Mystery Train (1989), Night on Earth (1991), Dead Man (1995), Year of the Horse (1997), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), Coffee and Cigarettes (2003), Broken Flowers (2005) and The Limits of Control (2009).

As Neil Young once sang, tonight’s the night – the big music has arrived in town. Along with fellow prog-rock fans, young and old, I walk to The Tivoli with a sense of excitement that only those who have a copy of Arriving Somewhere DVD can truly understand. Only two months ago, I was privy to witnessing Japan’s divine noise makers Mono, whose performance proved to be one of the most singularly powerful live experiences in my entire life, and just before that another crushing live unit –
Steven Wilson’s Swedish collaborators/protégés Opeth – yet this balmy evening also stores a whole array of spine-tingling moments for us.
The diverse crowd is still busy converging at the venue by the time newly-revamped Sleep Parade – who had earlier opened for tonight’s heroes during their inaugural Australian tour two ears ago – plug in and take all and sundry into a wide open sonic space. Oz-progsters to the core, the quartet unveil out one sprawling epic after another; Oxygen’s doomy arpeggio figure gives way to chunky riffing, while on the latest single Every Day and the propulsive drums-led Seconds Away the Melbournians very nearly better Karnivool at their own game. Frequently guitar-switching vocalist Leigh Davies is occasionally submerged in the dense instrumental mix, but nevertheless hits the requisite highs – in all, a strong performance in front of a healthy gathering that gives the band a warm Queensland welcome.

Live Review: The Kill Devil Hills, Mexico City and The Blackwater Fever @ The Zoo, Friday 5th February 2010

The hazy, swampy chamber that is The Zoo in summer is a perfect match for the mettle of the bands tonight – a mash of blues, rock, and country fermented in the practice rooms of Brisbane and Fremantle. It’s a largely desolate frontier that welcomes The Blackwater Fever to The Zoo tonight. The Brisbane duo move slowly at first, floating pared back and mellow bluesy tunes. The third track brings some rock to the room, and some bodies are now bravely leaving window seats to move into the space in front of the stage. |
Blackwater Fever slide from sludgy depths to rock and roll heights with a fullness of sound that challenges your eye sight: is it really just the two of them up there, making all that noise? Andrew Walters is a laconic drummer, while vocalist and guitarist Shane Hicks sings, slides and on occasion growls his way across the set. They finish with ’Taking Its Toll’, which it seems like it does, the track finishing the set with slow, deep melodies.

The Lost Weekend Festival – Change of Venue

Having seen a need for a camping and music festival easily accessible to the music fans of Brisbane, the team behind Sounds Of Spring planned The Lost Weekend which was to be involve three days of camping and music situated less than an hour from Brisbane’s CBD.
Unfortunately issues beyond the promoter’s control have made running the event in the way that they envisaged impossible, and have forced the inaugural The Lost Weekend to be moved to the picturesque Brisbane Riverstage and Botanical Gardens. |
The festival will no longer be a camping event and will now be held on Saturday March 6 and Sunday March 7, with the same diverse and exciting selection of international, interstate and local acts performing over three stages between 10am and 10pm on both days, still making it the perfect end to the festival season.

Vampire Weekend headline shows announced for April/May 2010
The Frontier Touring Company have announced that indie rockers Vampire Weekend will be performing a series of headline shows across Australia and New Zealand in April/May in addition to their Groovin’ The Moo performances.
The band initially made their mark on the music scene through their immense online success at a time when the term ‘internet sensation’ was relatively unheard of. After dominating online audiences, they released their hotly anticipated self-titled debut in 2008, cementing their arrival to indie rock. Their sharp, witty lyrics intermingled with African inspired beats guided them toward the forefront of the genre and the band quickly escalated to global fame.
