SPECTACULAR RACING TOPS OFF STELLAR GOLD COAST WEEKEND

A crowd of 58,977 spectators has enjoyed a hot day and hot racing on the streets of the Gold Coast today for the third and final day of the Armor All Gold Coast 600.

Today’s crowd brings the Event’s total tally to 170,073 fans across the three days, a result Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said was spectacular.

“This Event means jobs, it means tourism, this is too important for the Gold Coast, and with 170,000 odd spectators over three days, that is great for the Gold Coast,” said Minister Reeves.

“The aerial shots from today’s action that are being shown around the world show what the Gold Coast has to offer, and you couldn’t pay for that kind of advertising and the benefits will be ongoing – what a fantastic result.”

Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser echoed the Minister for Sport’s statements.

“There isn’t a spectator that was here today that will go home disappointed, or anyone that would have watched that on television and not hung on right to the last lap, that was competitive racing with the best backdrop in Surfers Paradise and it’s a wonderful thing,” said Fraser.

“No doubt the event has met the mark this year, we will make a formal assessment next year but right now it is firmly in pole position.”

Entertaining the spectators today was the second 300 kilometer, 120 lap battle for V8 Supercar glory on the streets, with reigning Champion Jamie Whincup and co-driver Steve Owen taking the honours after a hard-fought race which culminated in a furious battle for the lead between Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen across the final segment.

Van Gisbergen eventually crossed the line in second, seeing he and co-driver John McIntyre on the second step of the podium while Mark Winterbottom had a determined drive through the field after a mishap during his pit stop, to see he and his co-driver Luke Youlden claim third today.

“That is certainly up there as far as wins, we were a sitting duck there at the end but the car was a long way from yesterday, we reinvited the wheel which is not uncommon in motrsport, a tune up here or a tweak there, a spring change and so on, massive amount of changes last night, and the car was a lot better today,” said Whincup.

“We still used the rear tyres, but it was a fun battle with Shane, we raced hard but fair. That is what it is all about!”

Van Gisbergen was also happy with the battle to the finish although he wasn’t able to stand on the top step.

“It was definitely on at the end there and we were trying pretty hard, Jamie was driving really well, it was a great fight and I am pretty happy with the result, I would have been happy with third but second is better!” said van Gisbergen.

Priaulx was the highest placed international driver, placing tenth with his driving partner Lowndes in the TeamVodafone machine after they placed second in yesterday’s race, receiving a special trophy for his efforts.

Priaulx wasn’t alone in enjoying the weekend’s action, with Castroneves just one of the drivers expressing excitement at the prospect of coming back.

“Yes! It’s like Dancing With The Stars – so much fun. I gotta do it,” said Castroneves when asked if he would come back next year if he could.

The V8 Supercars weren’t the only cars thrilling the crowd today, with a special trip down memory lane arranged for the fans this morning when the infamous 1977 1-2 Bathurst finish of Alan Moffat and Colin Bond was recreated before their eyes.

During their session this morning, the cars did laps for the crowd before the entire field slowed to walking pace, apart from the cars of Moffat and Bond, who continued on at ‘race pace’ to recreate the form finish across the start/finish line.

However it wasn’t exactly as before, with the pair changing it up to see Bond cross the line first.

“This is a fantastic event to be a part of. It was terrific to recreate probably the most memorable moment in my motor racing career,” said Moffat

“It was great to spend time with the drivers from my era.

“The Bathurst Regional City Council and the National Motor Racing Museum must be congratulated for giving up the car for this weekend.

“The last time we went around it was 1-2, this time around it was 2-1, so I guess the score is even between Colin and myself. Who knows…we might have to get together for the decider.”

Also on track today were the Yokahama V8 Utes, the Hertz MINI Challenge pocket rockets and the Genuine Ford Parts Australia Formula Ford Championship.

Taking race wins in the Utes today were Rhys Mc Nally for race two and Grant Johnson for race three, with Chris Pither taking the round honours.

In the MINI Challenge and Formula Ford racing it was Glenn Seton and Chaz Mostert respectively who took the race three spoils, with Paul Stokell and Mostert winning the rounds respectively. Mostert dominated his category with three wins from three races allowing him to extend his championship lead significantly.

The Armor All Gold Coast 600 has taken place across three days October 22-24, and is a partnership between the Queensland Government and V8 Supercars Australia. For more information on the event, please visit www.goldcoast600.com.au

Woodford Folk Festival’s 25th Anniversary Programme Release [Festival News]

Woodford Folk Festivals 25th Anniversary programme is the most resplendent programme ever presented, promising an epic journey into the kaleidoscope of Australian culture. 3000 performers and artists, thinkers and cultural activists, environmentalists and comedians, and two former Prime Ministers will descend upon the forested valley of Woodfordia between the 27th December and the 1st of January to celebrate our existence in true Australian style.

With an expected aggregate attendance of 120,000 patrons, Woodford has evolved into one of Australia’s largest and most iconic festivals. Despite its large size, the festival has retained its grassroots, non-commercial feel. It is popular with all ages, and the ‘brilliant’ festival atmosphere is the most highly rated aspect of the event in visitor surveys. In addition to the 620 acts performing across 22 venues (all indoor except for the large amphitheatre), the festival streets are alive with roving street theatre, parades, art and spontaneous performances day and night.

At the heart of the Woodford Folk Festival is the 500-acre festival site, Woodfordia, a regenerated cattle property that has become the living, growing expression of thousands of people who have contributed to the cumulative vision of a cultural parkland and subtropical arboretum dedicated to the arts.

The musical line-up this year captures the very essence of this ‘folk in spirit’ festival, just a few of the highlights include The Cat Empire, Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and The Captains, Blue King Brown, Tim Freedman, Archie Roach, Mama Kin, Jeff Lang, Lior, Microwave Jenny, Dubmarine, Felix and The Phoenix, Hermitude, Marshall and The Fro, Cumbia Cosmonauts, The Barons of Tang, Basement Birds, The Break, TinPan Orange, Vika and Linda Bull, Christa Hughes and The Honkytonk Shonks, Flap!, Tijuana Cartel, Drawn from Bees, The Chemist, Leah Flanagan, kooii, Laneous and The Family Yah, Radical Son, Jackie Marshall, That 1 Guy, The Little Stevies, Shane Howard and his Band, Yeshe and You Am I.

Woodford’s international guests include Arrested Development (USA), The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker (USA), the incredible Katzenjammer (Norway), Baskery (Sweden), BBC World Music Award winners Daara J Family (Senegal), and from Canada, the crazy Tom Fun Orchestra, Jill Barber, Dan Mangan and Matthew Barber. From the UK comes Passenger, from the USA Love in the Circus, Stevie Salas and Bernard Fowler, and The Whitetop Mountaineers, and from the 70’s Mani Neumeier with Etsuko Watanabe.

The GreenHouse venue talks the walk of the environmental ethos that underpins the Woodford Folk Festival. Have your green Myths busted, meet green Innovators and make an educated choice about the next ten years of climate change. The Great Green Debate at the Concert stage examines The Spirit of Resistance (still) Lives! To fan The Flames of Discontent, Professor Ian Lowe will join Jack Mundey along with green activists, unionists and historians for a forum on the Green Bans of the 70’s.

Folklorica presents an incredibly rich tapestry of the sacred, traditional and ceremonial drawing on the diversity within our Australian culture. With Genghis Khan’s Songlines take a journey along the Silk Road, join a Gypsy Wedding, and revere the powerful voice of Jamyang Dolma from Tibet. ABC Radio National’s presenter Geoff Wood has programmed The Rhythm Divine, a selection of sacred music artists based in Australia.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Disturbia 2, go forward to 2525 humans have evolved into a new species of Pumans, part pig part human …

Make sure to visit the new Pineapple Lounge, piano bar and cocktail lounge, where Shampine flows in the magical garden, Wiley Reed tinkles the keys by night and Bogan Bingo is a daily ritual.

The Children’s Festival is also larger than ever before. Children can build a Permaculture garden, create, cook, dance and be enchanted by theatre, puppetry and song. New Years Eve sees them adorned with their own creations, in a swathe of bubbles and music in the Children’s Festival Procession through the festival streets.

Professor Timothy Sharp, happiness expert, can teach you how to sleep your way to the top, and The Bedroom Philosopher will have you in stitches. Learn Shamanic Drumming and get irie after dark in the Dancehall. Wander through the visual arts workshops in Penny Arcade to the Arti.Arti venue, where writers, artists and performers will cast your assumptions and fixed ideas aside to make way for new ideas. All the while there will be Gremlins building a Rocket Ship out of whatever they can nab, so hold onto your hat.

Whatever you do, don’t miss Woodford Folk Festival this year; it really will be a momentous journey. We invite you to join the pilgrimage, come and be a part of our 25th anniversary celebration.

Programmes and tickets are available on the Woodford Folk Festival website www.woodfordfolkfestival.com or call the Queensland Folk Federation on 07 5496 1066. Selected newsagents have the programmes, check online for these outlets.

Metallica @ Brisbane Entertainment Centre 16 October 2010 – Live Review

Review: Stephen Goodwin

James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett sear the air with the frenetic dual guitar solo that concludes One. Wedged between them, man-mountain Robert Trujillo crouches over his massive bass.

Three abreast and in-your-face, Lars Ulrich pulverising his kit directly behind them, the hulk and bulk of their physical presence as they shred away inspires awe.

And it’s precisely what’s been absent for much of the 40 minutes since Metallica opened their first Brisbane performance with the Ennio Morricone-inspired bombast of Ecstasy of Gold.

The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table @ Cremorne Theatre, QPAC 15th October 2010 – Theatre Review

  Review: Pepa Wolfe

It was a wet, windy night in Brisbane for the opening of Wesley Enoch’s The Story of the Miracles at Cookie’s Table, directed by and starring Leah Purcell. Produced by the independent indigenous company Bungabura Productions and presented by QPAC, this is the story of Opening Night. It goes something like this.

The Cremorne had been transformed (the stage removed so that some of the audience was sitting amongst the set) into the simple dining room of a house on Stradbroke Island, sand strewn on the ground, with the backdrop arranged in pieces, working both as a broken barrier to the outside world and an obscure window into the past, the faces of time gone by etched into its panels. At its centre sat the table, Cookie’s Table.

Originally Cookie’s birth tree, it was cut down by the white man and turned into a table that was eventually passed down through four generations. This night the audience learnt the history of the table; its meaning, its power. Its mystery unravelling as estranged mother and son, Annie and Nathan, argued over its ownership, and in doing so challenged the meaning of family and the elusive nature of the truth.

Kaki King Australia Tour – November 2010 [Tour News]

KakiKaki King
It’s pretty much stating the obvious that Australia loves Kaki King, and with the amount of trips the girl in question has made down here since bursting into our consciousness back in 2007, it’s also obvious the love flows both ways.

With recently announced November shows in most states, fans can once again catch up with the inimitable Kaki King as she performs songs from her latest release, the critically acclaimed Junior.

“King’s playing is awe-inspiring …. It’s darn near impossible to resist her charms.” – NME

“King’s voice, whether riding roughshod over her band’s new found bravura arrangements, or playing the smoky chanteuse, is still a decisive instrument of its own; fruity and brusque or lilting and cowed, she makes every word count.” – Mojo ****

The Bohemian Masquerade Ball @ The Old Museum, Brisbane 9th October 2010 – Live Review

Review: Victoria Nugent

It wasn’t a typical night out, but as the Old Museum in Bowen Hills came alive for the Bohemian Masquerade, it promised to be a spectacular evening. The event was spread out over two large rooms and a verandah, with decadent costumes and masks adding to the amazing atmosphere.

The first room started out with house music, before transitioning into a range of DJs and bands which got the crowd dancing. Continue reading The Bohemian Masquerade Ball @ The Old Museum, Brisbane 9th October 2010 – Live Review
