Tour News: Cannibal Corpse ‘Torture’ Australian Tour – October 2012

After three long torturous years, death metals titanic kings, CANNIBAL CORPSE, return to Australia for a sarcophagic frenzy of sordid and demented proportions!

Their new ceaselessly hostile album release, TORTURE, proves that when it comes to combining unrestrained maliciousness, involved song writing and technical precision they still have no equal. The twelfth full-length of their inspiring twenty-four year career, the Floridian quintet have never sounded so vital, the album building upon the wealth of powerful, dark, and memorable songs comprising 2006’s Kill and 2009’s Evisceration Plague and pointedly upping the ante at every turn.

Live Review: Stonefield @ Northcote Social Club, Melbourne – 24 April 2012

Review by Ben Connolly
There are a couple of caveats to make about Stonefield as they took to the stage at The Northcote Social Club. The first is that they are a band of young, impossibly cute sisters from country Victoria, all apart from singer/drummer Amy Findlay, able to lay claim to being teenagers. It’s abundantly clear at times, too, with their youth defying their position – furtive, self-conscious glances to each other through face-shielding long lanky locks, seeking silent approval and encouragement – never mind the packed room full of hopeful adoration right at their feet.

The second note is about the style of music they produce – 70’s era synth-heavy psych-influenced prog-rock straight from their parents vinyl collection. It’s a genre with a shaky recent history in the Australian rock scene, with name after name hailed in the UK press as the next great hope of rock music only to fall in a heap come time and critical analysis. It’s a hype seemingly mirrored in Stonefield’s already mythically-charged short history – plucked from their country-town garage, they won a slot at Perth’s One Movement industry event, where a band booker snapped them up to play on the John Peel stage at the holiest of holy grails, Glastonbury. All of this while still labouring under a short EP and doing the merry-go-round of Triple J’s perpetual Unearthed treadmill.

Tour News: NICKI MINAJ “Pink Friday” Australian Tour – May 2012

Nicki Minaj, one of the hottest artists on the planet, and indisputably the biggest breakthrough artist of 2011, has announced that the PINK FRIDAY TOUR will land in Australia in May, taking in shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

2011 was an incredible year for Nicki, with her multi-platinum selling debut album PINKFRIDAY boasting the most charted singles by any female rap album in Billboard history. Nicki also became the first artist to have 7 singles on the Billboard HOT 100 chart simultaneously. She criss-crossed the US playing to massive sell-out audiences with friend and mentor Lil Wayne on the sold–out “I Am Music II” tour and then slayed audiences as the special guest on Britney Spear’s US tour. In addition to winning Best Hip Hop Video at the 2011 MTV Video MusicAwards along with Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist at the 2011 American Music Awards, Nicki was recently nominated for three Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album.

AUSTRALIAN TOUR CANCELLED.

DEVILDRIVER vocalist Dez FaFara issued the following statement regarding their Australian Tour Cancellation:

I’ve NEVER cancelled a tour before. EVER…

I have Pneumonia and I’m restricted from flying for at least 2 weeks. So unfortunately we have to cancel our Australian tour.

I respectfully apologize to all our Australian fans, Six Feet Under; Darkest Hour and the folks at SW touring who worked so hard to put this tour together.

Thank you for your support. We’ll make it up to you on the next tour.” – Dez FaFara

Ticket holders can go back to the point of purchase for a refund.

DEVILDRIVER has always been a band on a three-pronged mission: Work hard, rock harder, and kick as many asses as possible in the process. Since their inception DEVILDRIVER have made a monstrous impact on the metal world with their thunderous grooves, haunting vocals and crushing live performances.

DEVILDRIVER tear through metal again with ‘Beast’, their 5th studio album an exorcism of animalistic primal hooks, death metal percussion and propulsive thrashing with Rocksound calling ‘Beast’ “pure fucking class” and Revolver magazine declaring “From the bowels of hell, DEVILDRIVER has unleashed a “Beast” that will leave a trail of bloody scars and broken bones wherever it may roam”.

Interview: Frankie Poullain – THE DARKNESS

Interview by Robert Pugsley
The Darkness, the glam rock, balls out quartet from Suffolk are coming back to Australia for the first time in 6 years and Life Music Media was able to catch up with bass player Frankie Poullain as he told us about their comeback, new material and a surprising approval of One Direction.

We started off asking Frankie about why The Darkness decided to reform after their fracturing and eventual drug induced implosion in 2006? Frankie exclaimed down the phone that it was “A sense of duty, we have a sense of duty to rescue people from getting their ears assaulted by vacuous soulless music”

Tour News: ART OF SLEEPING Announced As Main Support For OWL EYES’ ‘Crystalised’ Tour In May 2012

Brisbane indie-folk quintet Art of Sleeping has been surging with momentum since the release of their standout single ‘Empty Hands’ in March. Eager to deliver their stellar live show to interstate audiences for the first time, the band has just been announced as the main support for Victorian songstress Owl Eyes’ ‘Crystalised’ tour in May. To coincide with the tour announcement, the band has just declared that Select Music’s Rob Giovanonni is joining their team as booking agent, additionally capping off all of their recent successes with a stunning new video clip to accompany their latest single.

Since its release in early March, ‘Empty Hands’ has received resounding nods from tastemakers in Australia and the United States alike. National youth broadcaster triple j showed avid support, providing enough airplay for the track to achieve a place as the seventh most-played on the station for four weeks in a row. The new video clip is a fitting visual accompaniment – pairing the band’s thunderous rhythm section and chilling vocal melodies with fleeting imagery that draws from their penchant for folk-inspired storytelling.

Live Review: John Butler + Felicity Groom @ The Metro Theatre, Sydney – 27 April 2012

Review by Natalie Salvo
Friday night at The Metro was an intimate affair between a man and a woman. Two Perth singer-songwriters cracked open the guitar cases and played a set of personal and stripped-back songs with little more than an impressive stage set for company.

Felicity Groom performed with just an electric guitar in a set-up and feel that was rather similar to Adalita from Magic Dirt. She initially won over the crowd by cracking a coy joke about her song, a little one about killing things that showcased her ethereal vocals. Similarly, “Only 2722.66KM” was described as one written about a guy from Melbourne who was nice but didn’t really deserve to have it written about him. It was rather aching and had soft tones, a different vibe entirely to the following where the guitars seemed to chime and jangle.
